Watch what happens when a deaf Montreal boy hears music for the first time

Most of us grow up hearing music — but for one little boy, that small joy didn't come until he was three years old.

Montreal's Auguste Majkowski was born deaf, but a few months ago his family flew to Los Angeles where he underwent brain surgery to receive an Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI), which allowed him to hear.

Earlier this week, he got to hear music for the first time.

"We never thought the first song he would hear was 'Ma Baker' by Boney M. but we're not complaining," wrote his mother on their YouTube page. "This moment was absolutely amazing for all of us! Check out his reaction."

DJ Mr Thing on finding J.Dilla’s ‘Cold Steel’ sample

Love this outtake from First Word Records’ mini documentary Nothing Leaves The House. The extra footage captures DJ Mr Thing describing how, at a listening post in the Real Groovy record shop, New Zealand, he discovered the sample J.Dilla used for Phat Kat’s Cold Steel Beat. Visibily animated by the find, Mr Thing explains that he’s been sitting on the knowledge for a while and proceeds to demonstrate to an excited Eric Lau, Essa, Aly and Sri from First Word, how Dilla twisted the sounds of an unknown piece of soul into that funky Cold Steel beat.

Finally free of a label, Banks previews Broke With Expensive Taste.

Earlier this month, Azealia Banks announced that she had parted ways with Interscope, a move which would supposedly clear the way for her long-delayed debut album Broke With Expensive Taste.
New single ‘Heavy Metal and Reflective’ finds Banks as combative as ever over a synth-heavy beat produced by frequent collaborator Lil Internet. Stream it below; it’s due out on July 29 but is out now in New Zealand.

homeboy-sandman-hallways

Homeboy Sandman is set to release ‘Hallways’, his second full-length album on Stones Throw Records. It is an ode to the space between where you are and where you are headed; a space in flux, and a space where Sandman himself noticeably thrives in this release. Producers on Hallways include Knxwledge, Blu, DJ Spinna, Oh No and Jonwayne, who produced the first single, “America, The Beautiful.”

The prolific Queens MC has been prominently published in Gawker and Huffington Post, plus featured in an array of media outlets such as NPR, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone even naming him as “Artist to Watch.” Since signing with Stones Throw Records in 2011, Homeboy Sandman has made himself at home releasing a full length ‘First of a Living Breed' along with a series of five short records, establishing himself as one of the most productive and creative lyricists of this generation. Release date is September 2nd.

The 10 best Sega Genesis theme songs

The Sega Genesis turns 25 this summer. Well, not your Sega Genesis. Yours is probably a couple years younger, plus your parents gave it to Goodwill when you moved out, plus you hadn't played it in a while anyway because the AV adapter on the back was super finicky and you had eventually saved up to get a PlayStation.

While everyone seems to have a fondness for the music of the mid-'80s NES games (Super Mario Bros. , Tetris , Punch-Out ), the Genesis was my first console and I feel like its music is overlooked.

Check out the 10 best Sega Genesis soundtracks in the gallery above. While there are plenty of memorable soundtracks from the 16-bit era, I focused on Sega-only games, and left out cross-platform games. Sorry, Wolverine: Adamantium Rage and NHL '96.

Watch Rob Ford and Deadmau5 go for coffee

Canadian electronic musician Deadmau5 just took Toronto mayor Rob Ford out for coffee, and posted a video of the whole thing. In it, the pair take Deadmau5's Ferrari to Tim Hortons, Ford orders 5 shots of espresso and they talk about politics and cyclists. Check it out. It'll be the weirdest half hour of your day.

BLONDE – HIGHER GROUND (KANT REMIX)

Blonde

The deep sounds of Copenhagen’s KANT have landed our favorite remix on Blonde‘s new Higher Ground EP . The uplifting melodic original has summer written all over it, but KANT’s version unleashes all the feels – so much that it landed ‘Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune’ this month on BBC Radio 1. If you don’t already know his production, this track is like the the lovechild of Mark Knight and The Magician. Listen below, and grab it when itdrops on August 3rd.

The new Mac DeMarco video is the weirdest thing you will see this week

He's already known for his bizarre, low-tech videos, but Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Mac DeMarco has outdone himself with his new video for "Chamber of Reflection."

It involves the lonely journey of a woman wearing a Homer Simpson mask as she wanders city streets, lies in a hammock, looks out over the water and rides the subway, and is set to the slowed-down sound of DeMarco's track.

It's oddly unnerving. Watch:

A new rap song every monday.

Stones Throw‘s resident salty cracker is back with some more rap for you, a week on from his Special Herbs medley.

Jonwayne took to Twitter on Monday this week to announce a new weekly series: “I’m going to be dropping a rap song every Monday until I don’t feel like it anymore.”

Up first is the mellow vibe of ‘No’ with the rapper’s laid-back rapping style applied to an old Jay Dee beat – hear it below.

In related news, Stones Throw have released Jonwayne’s Cassette series on vinyl. Compiled by the rapper, the 12″ includes nine cuts from the tape and digital only series that led to his debut on the label.
Check back in on Monday for another rap. Or not.

Halifax Pop Explosion to unleash Ghostface Killah, Against Me!

The Florida punk band Against Me!, with members, from left to right, Inge Johansson, Atom Willard, Laura Jane Grace, and James Bowman, performs at the Halifax Pop Explosion, taking place Oct. 21 to 25. (CONTRIBUTED)

Legends of hip hop and 21st-century punk are among the offerings at this years Halifax Pop Explosion, taking place Oct. 21 to 25.

Organizers for the annual festival of alternative music, and its coinciding arts and technology conference Collide, unveiled a list of over 30 acts this afternoon at the Carleton Music Bar & Grill.

Starting locally, they built from familiar East Coast favourites up to major headliners, including Wu-Tang Clan members Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, backed by Toronto rhythm trio BADBADNOTGOOD, and Florida punk game-changers Against Me!.

Danny Brown (CONTRIBUTED)

There was also a surprise last-minute announcement that Detroit rapper Danny Brown, who has previously collaborated with Halifax singer Megan James from the electronic duo Purity Ring, would also be performing at this fall’s indie pop extravaganza.

“We’re definitely happy to have more hip hop; it’s something that’s blowing up in Halifax more and more,” enthused the event’s new executive director James Boyle, who stepped into the post vacated by longtime HPX head Jonny Stevens earlier this year.

“We’ve got a larger hip-hop community, so we’re excited to have a more diverse lineup with more electronic sounds as well. And that Raekwon/Ghostface/BADBADNOTGOOD show is going to be off the hook.”

Also scheduled to appear are Canadian acts Kevin Drew, Operators, Teenage Kicks, Bry Webb, Astral Swans, Petra Glynt and Single Mothers. Calgary’s Chad VanGaalen, Kingston duo P.S. I Love You and Toronto’s Tokyo Police Club will also trek eastward, while Whitehorse, featuring Halifax-born Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, will perform with Symphony Nova Scotia at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium.

While acts like Drew from Broken Social Scene and the Constantines’ singer/guitarist Webb will be festival favourites, Boyle says the band to keep an eye on is Operators, featuring Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs.

“I saw their first show at Canadian Music Week. It’s an electronic duo and it’s perfect for the Pop Explosion. If you haven’t heard them yet, you’ll definitely hear it by October, and it’s something Halifax has definitely never seen before.”

Mike Boyd (BLACK BOX MUSIC)

Maritime performers at HPX include Halifax duo Cousins, Enfield rapper Mike Boyd and Nova Scotia/New Brunswick aboriginal hip-hop crew City Natives. That roster will grow as more acts are announced in the coming months, along with plans for the Collide conference.

These acts come after news of HPX dates by Toronto electropop act Austra and U.S. comedian Jen Kirkman (Chelsea Lately, Drunk History), plus a show by Toronto indie singer-songwriter Lights at the Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Centre, one of three wet/dry all-ages events, along with the Danny Brown and Raekwon and Ghostface Killah with BADBADNOTGOOD shows.

“It’s a key thing for us to have the Forum as a proper all-ages venue, which in Halifax can be very hard to do,” said Boyle. “To have a large-scale venue for our highest capacity shows, as well as have underage people attend, is a major win for us.

“And to have shows in a venue that’s traditionally wet/dry, so people in the community know things are set up that way, is easier than changing the setup at Olympic Hall all the time.”

Festival wristbands, passes and tickets go on sale Friday at halifaxpopexplosion.com.

Best New Tracks - Pitchfork: Rustie: "Attak" [ft. Danny Brown]

Best New Tracks - Pitchfork: Rustie: "Attak" [ft. Danny Brown]

It's kind of surprising that the inevitable took this long: Rustie has released his first collaborative single with a high-caliber rap artist. Admittedly, the Glaswegian beatmaker is no stranger to working with vocals—2011's excellent Glass Swords featured singer/producer Nightwave woven through its hyperactive synths and clicking beats, and it was followed by an alternate version of "After Light", which boasted the featherlight harmonies of AlunaGeorge. But for anyone who thought 2013's hard-knocking "Slasherr" wouldn't have suffered from a couple verses and choruses, "Attak" delivers on all fronts.

The second single to surface from Rustie's forthcoming Green Language LP, "Attak" succumbs to the fast-talking and foul-mouthed Danny Brown, and the combination would be hard pressed to work any better. Maybe because Brown is already a living cartoon character (albeit more in line with Fritz the Cat than Bugs Bunny) and Rustie's helium-huffing, dayglo beats sound readymade for fidgety Saturday morning TV, but the two personalities compliment and challenge each other throughout the formidable tune. Hefty 808s boom and bounce underneath a campy synth hook and repurposed rave stabs, giving Brown a radiant throne from which to posture, "Got the game on lock like we changed the keys." And even though Rustie would never be one to offer the metaphor himself, it's a cocksure sentiment that rings true for all parties involved.

We seem him cruising around the streets of east Los Angeles, sometimes even around the offices of Stones Throw Records, and we always wonder: "How does he find time to make all those beats and still leave the house?"

His name is Knxlwedge sometimes known as KNX and often pronounced "knowledge." He's from Philly and New Jersey, now in Los Angeles. He makes a lot of beats. Unsubstantiated rumors claim he employs an army of clones working around the clock on beats. A 53-track Anthology of beats came out on a double cassette from Leaving Records not long ago.

However he does it, he'll soon be doing it with Stones Throw. We're working on an album to be released later this year. Meanwhile, KNX has a new mixtape, released on his Bandcamp page just last night, and a T-shirt here at Stones Throw.

SOPHIE ALOUR - SHAKER

For her fifth record, young French saxophonist Sophie Alour returns with a new formula, a beautiful trio album, with saxophone, organ, and drums. Is it because she played with Rhoda Scott? Or just because she likes the somewhat historical funky sound it carries. With gusto and a hint of mischief, she sheds a new light on some of her own compositions, plus a colourful version of the Sergio Mendes arrangement of 'My Favourite Things'. Tracks include: Joke; In This World; Comptine;
Shaker; En Ton Absence; Mystère et Boule de Gomme!; I Wanna Move My Body!'; Nos Cendres; My Favourite Things; and En Ton Absence (alternate take).
