IN THE STORE | KOREATOWN ODDITY - FINNA BE PAST TENSE

The Koreatown Oddity is a Los Angeles MC/Producer specializing in Raw Hip Hop Shit. Here's his new album.

Limited edition cassette available now. Vinyl available Feb. 24.

He is Dominique Purdy, born and raised in Koreatown, Los Angeles.  His first hip-hop influence was his own mother, who made jewelry and hung tight with Ice T, the Rhyme Syndicate, and Grandmaster Caz.

“I remember Caz showing my mom how to freestyle on cassette, just fucking around. He was basically saying have fun with it, say something that comes from right where ever you are.”

Purdy moved from corner to corner through Koreatown his whole life, drawing, writing, and developing his own brand of experimental hip-hop, fused with comedy, and impromptu performance. He wrote and starred in the independent feature Driving White Black (2016). As The Koreatown Oddity, rocking a wolf mask he bought back in high school for 70 bucks, he’s been doing shows anywhere and everywhere, whether he’s invited or not: L.A.’s The Laugh Factory, Wendy’s, and Greyhound Stations.

Finna Be Past Tense is his first album with Stones Throw, following a long line of independently released cassettes. Finna Be Past Tense was produced entirely by Vex Ruffin, who met the MC after one of his public stunts.  The album – also featuring Joyce Wrice, Black Moses, Tron7Seize, DJ Lala, DJ Luman – is based around a loose concept of Koreatown Oddity reckoning with life, death, and the passage of time.

Vinyl and CD now shipping. Worldwide release: August 26th.

Mild High Club founder Alexander Brettin grew up playing flute in the school band and majoring in jazz studies in Chicago. In 2012, a visit to Los Angeles allowed him to connect with the Stones Throw crew. Within a year, after passing the early demos of what would become Timeline onto Peanut Butter Wolf, Brettin made the move out west.

“The difference between Timeline and Skiptracing is detail,” Brettin said. “I was stubborn with the process for Timeline; it took almost three years to let go of it.” On Timeline, Brettin resorted to vague lyrics so as to highlight the music itself. But for Skiptracing there’s both a heightened thematic aspect as well as more complex musical arrangements encasing it. In Brettin’s estimation, the album’s story arc is that of a “private investigator attempting to trace the steps of the sound and the spirit of American music.”

"There is no treatise likely to be too learned for me. Without Laying claim to real learning it is yet true that since my childhood I have striven to learn the minds of the best and wisest of every period of time. It is a disgrace for every artist who does not try to do as much." - November 2, 1809, to Breitkopf and Hartel, of Leipzig.

COMING AUGUST 26 | MILD HIGH CLUB - SKIPTRACING

Mild High Club have announced their second full length album, Skiptracing, due out August 26th on Stones Throw Records. It’s the follow up to last year’s Timeline. Here's the title track, “Skiptracing”
Mild High Club's Alexander Brettin shot the majority of the short film himself with assistance from Bradford Walters. Brettin saw some of Walter's surfing footage when Mild High Club toured with the Allah-Lahs and was inspired to shoot Walters himself on the beach, imitating French New Wave. Brettin explains the video in his own words, “It’s a guy with a detector who finds an old friend and has a dance. You could say he's skiptracing the presence of the character played by the indelible Bleu Archbold.”

BOARDS OF CANADA REMIX FOR ODD NOSDAM. ALBUM RELEASED TODAY ON VHS.

Boards of Canada remix for Odd Nosdam. Album released today on VHS.

  • February 22, 2016
In the store | ODD NOSDAM - SISTERS Leaving Records

Album released on VHS (8 videos) and vinyl. Here is Boards of Canada remix of the title track "Sisters"

From Leaving Records: Odd Nosdam makes his second appearance on Leaving Records and greets 2016 with Sisters. Throughout, Nosdam splits his time between cosmic, slow burning beats and reflective soundscapes littered with intriguing textures and mind bending samples. Analogue sounds are generous and knowingly manipulated. Gorgeous samples are deployed, sturdy yet emotional. Cymbals explode.

Already a long revered figure in underground beats, in the last several years Odd Nosdam has been able to test his new productions on the world class sound system of Low End Theory. Much of Sisters was inspired by those room shaking sonics, so it is fitting that kindred spirit Teebs makes an appearance here in a dreamy collaboration. Although Sisterscontains plenty of absolute bangers, its quieter moments also stun with their hypnotic beauty.

Nosdam writes of the inspiration for the title track, "when the sun finally breaks through on an overcast day, Sisters was very much inspired by that wonderful moment… and the longing for it."

THE VHS TAPE RELEASE: Collection of 8 original music videos from the album directed by Big Pauper. Limited to 50 copies. Total running time is 29 minutes.
