When musicians perform, they may look calm and relatively in control. But it turns out that inside their brains, there are fireworks going on.
According to a new animated TED-Ed video, when people listen to music, several parts of the brain are activated; when musicians play music, they light up practically every area of the brain at once.
Scientists have found that playing music increases communication between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, which makes for better problem-solving and boosts memory. Musicians also have a higher level of executive function, which helps with planning, strategizing and attention to detail.
And here's a reason not to skip those scales: it turns out that disciplined practice not only strengthens those brain functions, but allows us to apply them to other activities too.
