Brownswood Bubbler alumni and Eglo Record’s stalwart Fatima releases the video for the fLako produced ‘La Neta’ as the latest edition in the campaign for the forthcoming debut album ‘Circle.

We enjoyed seeing another great video from Fatima as she seems to be making her way through the seasons with each one. This picturesque portrait of the snowy 5 boroughs of NYC compliments the development of the song and is a lovely contrast from her previous video for ‘Family that displayed familiar landscapes of London in the depth of autumn along side what seems to be her family and friends.
Enjoy!

ARETHA FRANKLIN - THE QUEEN OF SOUL

The Queen Of Soul creates a rich musical portrait of Franklin s incomparable run at Atlantic Records between 1967 and 1976. Packed with 87 songs arranged chronologically, the set opens with generous selections from the first five studio albums she recorded for the label I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Aretha Arrives, Lady Soul, Aretha Now, and Soul 69. Recorded between 1967 and 1968, all five of the albums topped the R&B charts and gave the world classics like "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Chain of Fools," "Think," and the #1 smash "Respect." The set also mixes in several rare outtakes of songs like "It Was You" from Aretha Arrives and "Talk to Me, Talk to Me" from Soul 69. The collection also spotlights the great music Franklin recorded in the 1970s, including the two albums she released to open the decade This Girl s in Love with You and Spirit in the Dark. The former boasted an electrifying version of the Band s "The Weight" with Duane Allman on slide guitar, while the latter featured the hit "Don t Play That Song." Along with several singles from this era ("Spanish Harlem" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water"), The Queen Of Soul also gathers up several live performances with "Spirit in the Dark" (Reprise with Ray Charles) from Aretha Live at the Fillmore West (1971), plus several songs from her live album Amazing Grace (1972). The latter recording won the Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1973 and remains Franklin s best-selling album to date. ~amazon

Nicki Minaj has always seemed to exist outside the realm of pedestrian blog-rap buzz, unconcerned with using her power to ride the waves of up-and-comers the way her biggest peers do. (Think Drake and MigosKanye West and Chief Keef, or even Lil Wayne and Chance). So her decision to freestyle over a viral YouTube track ("Boss Ass Bitch") and then go rogue on an unofficial remix of the Hottest New Single by Hottest New Atlanta Rapper Young Thug feels like a coup, a serious jolt to her brand.
But instead of sounding desperate—as though she's forcefully jumping a bandwagon, or just learning to read the internet—she lets everyone know that she's been watching all along and is in total control. She's Auto-Tuned, she's singing about Twitter bios in a fake patois, she's flexing her voice to match Young Thug's, she's telling Justin Timberlake that she's "coming for Jes-siCA BIEL!" Nicki's impossibly at ease, as ever.

L-Vis-1990: it's time for Dance Mania's artists to get their props

A new compilation - and L-Vis's own Dance System EPs - are bringing back the minimalist magic of ghettohouse

The first time I came across Dance Mania was through Daft Punk's Teachers in 1997, when I was 13 years old. Who were all these people that Daft Punk thought were amazing enough to credit on their track? It turned out about a third of them were Dance Mania artists, although at that point they were just names to me; it was pretty impossible to find Dance Mania records in Brighton at that time. Then Daft Punk did an Essential Mix, which was the first time I actually heard the music. That mix was what made me want to get into DJing.

The most important Dance Mania record for me is Lil' Louis's The Original Video Clash from 1988. Some element of Video Clash always manages to creep its way into my productions. That track pointed the way forward to what happened in the early 90s, when producers from the west side of Chicago such as DJ Funk and DJ Deeon developed a sound that was a lot rawer and more uncompromising than what had come before. They realised they didn't need as many elements to get the dancefloor moving: it was just a saturated kick drum, snare on the one, clap on the one, a hard 909 high-hat, a bouncing bassline, a crude, booty-style lyric and not much else.

At one point, Dance Mania were putting out a new record almost every week. The producers worked quickly on basic four-track recorders, transferring the energy directly to the dancefloor. Their only influences were each other. They weren't thinking about the outside world, it was all about what would work in their local club.

I've recently started playing back-to-back with Traxman, who's a Dance Mania legend from back in the day but is now probably better known for his footwork stuff. I was playing before him at Lit City Rave in New York under my new ghettohouse alias Dance System. He kept coming up to me going, "What the fuck? How do you know this stuff?!" He came over to my studio the day after and ended up playing my tracks down the phone to DJ Deeon, which was a crazy experience. We've started working on music together and we're hopefully going to be doing a US tour together later this year.

None of the Dance Mania artists have really gotten the recognition they deserve. Thanks to a new Strut compilation though, people are really interested in them again. It's great that the owner Ray Barney has reopened the label; hopefully they can capitalise on it this time.

The reason that ghettohouse has endured over the years is because it's so simple. When you have so few elements it makes for totally timeless music: one idea, no distracting melodies. When I'm making tracks as Dance System, I don't want to "take people to another place". It's just music for people to get their freak on to.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s Piñata will be released on Madlib Invazion, March 18, 2014.
Listen: “Robes” feat. Earl Sweatshirt & Domo Genesis, premiered last night on Benji B’s BBC Radio 1 show.

Freddie Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets, but unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth without inhibition or an exaggerated rap persona. Pinata, a 17-track collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his transparent approach to making music, combining stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer.
Pinata is "a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax," Gibbs says, and the full-length result of a process that began in 2009. It's an album with a sound that couldn't be any further from the radio, where, according to the Gibbs, every rapper is Superman, or the dope dealer of the century, who has grinded to the top, never made a mistake and has no chinks in his armor.

[Download] Felon – “Isla” (Sebastian Carter Remix)

      seb carter

The young, Swiss, Sebastian Carter has caught my ear lately with his spacious remixes featuring gorgeous aerial vocals and synths that straight up just sound pretty. His most recent work, the remix of Felon’s ‘Isla’ brings in the great jazzy saxophone solo and a melody that sounds more like something out of the outback than Switzerland. Make sure to check his other remixes as well. 100% vibez.

Eliza Doolittle – Walking On Water (Bixel Boys Remix)

      artworks-000069406188-8e0a9v-t500x500

It was a pretty easy decision when we collectively agreed to add our LA buds Bixel Boys to the roster of talent on our illustrious Ones to Watch in 2014 list, and they’re certainly making us look good. Coming out of the gates red hot, the B-boys flip UK darling Eliza Doolittle‘s vocals into a pumping club track without sacrificing their integrity. Never shy to skate the fine line between cheese and class, they’ve kept their ears to the underground while still appealing to your girlfriend and all of her friends as Eliza’s vocals coast over piano stabs before giving way to an unsuspecting drop that’ll have even the snarkiest of punters catching a vibe. Grab the free download and hail the #freelife.

Review: Ras G – Raw Fruit Vol. 2
      "Raw Fruit 2!!!
      same agenda
      another raw “cold pressed”
      blunt smoking
      green drink sippin
      beat adventure
      made at my SpaceBase
for I&I to vibe out to"
So says the maker himself on the purpose and production for Raw Fruit Vol. 2, the second beat tape in a series of four.

Ras G is a producer’s producer. Frequently associated with Brainfeeder, Dakim, Kutmah and the Los Angeles beat scene as a whole, his work takes a more experimental and jazzy approach than many of his contemporaries, but is no less revered because of it. Last year's 2013 album Back on the Planet raised Ras' profile up a few notches from a respected underground beatmaker to psychedelic space voyager. But his latest entry into the Raw Fruits canon shares relatively little in common with his full-length. Anyone expecting more along the lines of Back on the Planet will ultimately find themselves left if not disappointed, then a little bemused. These Raw Fruit tapes were not meant to follow what was a highly praised full-bodied release of high fidelity production values; they are raw, off the cuff cassette tapes, and Vol. 2 heartily conforms to that practise.
