'Michael Eavis didn't know what dance music is' … a history of rave at Glastonbury

At some point in the late 80s – though no one remembers exactly when – Glastonbury festival became a nexus of the traveller, free party and acid-house scenes, and the festival was never the same again …

Giant rubber duckies; tunnels of flowers; bassbins disguised with gingham tablecloths; sitting in upturned burning cars as entertainment. As if it weren’t enough of a struggle trying to get people to untangle their first Glastonbury raving memories from three decades ago, the things they do remember feel pretty hallucinatory on their own.

Nobody can be quite sure when raving first started in Glastonbury. Obviously all-night dancing predates acid house, but through the 80s that meant dub reggae: Youth of Killing Joke and the Orb remembers Saxon and Jah Shaka soundsystems as “the only music you could go dance to all night long that wasn’t acoustic around a bonfire”. The Mutoid Waste Company’s dystopian wreckage sculptures hosted pagan-industrial metal-banging dances throughout the night. Dance music as such wasn’t unknown, though. Mark Darby of Exeter’s Mighty Force collective says: “The first traveller soundsystem playing dance music I personally heard was Crazy Dave’s Record Bus – an old green coach with huge speakers – going through a disco phase, one afternoon at Stonehenge 83!”

There’s nothing more topical than the debt owed by humans to the planet. As more species become extinct and the human race looks on course for wipe out, River Yarra pays tribute to the amphibian inhabitants of the ancient supercontinent, Gondwana. Already familiar with free-flowing Parisian label, Antinote, the Aussie producer flips the downtempo leftfield vibes of his Lucky Boy EP on its head for the label’s 50th outing, Frogmania.
Plunging into the highly animated ‘Frogz Ov Gondwana’, punchy kicks, rippling toms and hissing hi’s show off Yarra’s love of percussion. Bouncy low-end flourishes and crunching maracas pave the way for high range shimmers and twinkles, bringing with them a distinct sense of sorcery. As the raw elements of Yarra’s composition sing, the dynamic realm of Gondwana is truly brought to life.
Frog Mania will be released on Antinote on 28th June. Pre-order from Bandcamp.

All proceeds will go to City Plaza Hotel, a squat for refugees in the centre of Athens.
Mira Calix, Lucrecia Dalt, Mark Fell, Jim O’Rourke, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Black To Comm, Leyland Kirby, Lawrence English and many more have contributed to CRXSSINGS, a collaborative fundraiser compilation featuring 34 tracks from 17 duos.
All proceeds from the compilation will go to City Plaza Hotel, a squat for migrants and refugees in the centre of Athens that provides refuge for those fleeing economic, environmental, political and military disasters in their home countries.

“This compilation in no way claims to represent the voices of refugees and migrants, nor does it represent the scores of incredible musicians from the Middle East, North Africa or Central America whose communities are being disrupted by mass migration”, explain compilers Rutger Zuydervelt and Gabriel Saloman.
“Rather, the artists participating in this compilation recognize that their lives and art have benefitted from the relative ease with which they are able to move across borders, performing for international audiences and developing relationships across cultures.”

The Lisbon-based producer twists the LinnDrum LM-1 in unusual directions.
Serpente, aka Portuguese producer Bruno Silva, has made a tribute to the classic Prince album Parade using the legendary artist’s favorite drum machine.
Parada features eight tracks made using the LinnDrum LM-1 as a starting point, twisting the ’80s drum machine into unusual directions to craft a frenetic sound that is equal parts Príncipe and Prince.

Parada is out now on Ecstatic Recordings and is available digitally and on physical formats via Boomkat. Check out the cover art and tracklist below.

Tracklist:
01. ‘Nível de Chama’
02. ‘Trama’
03. ‘Símbolo’
04. ‘Símbolo II’

Move D has a reputation for his collaborations, something his new album Building Bridges has put front and centre. Recorded between 1999 and 2019 it brings together Moufang’s close friends and long time collaborators including Thomas Fehlmann, Fred P, Juju & Jordash, D-Man & rEAGENZ and Benjamin Brunn, for eight tracks of blissed-out deep house and dub techno.
Originally the album started out as an entry for Aus Music’s Inside Out series but after David sent over a few new tracks to label head Will Saul, he decided it needed to be a standalone album. The tracks may have been written over a 20 year period but you’d be forgiven for thinking they were all written in one session; each track feels timeless and the entirety of the release incredibly cohesive. Our pick is ‘Dots’; a warm stream of glowing synths and tittering hi-hats punctuated by echoing vocal slivers.
Building Bridges will be released on Aus Music in July.

Barker’s eagerly anticipated solo album is out this summer.
Leisure System resident Barker is releasing a vinyl-only white label on Ostgut Ton this week, ahead of a new solo album called Utility.
Utility is out in “late summer” and follows last year’s Debiasing EP, whose euphoric, kick drum-free techno gained it a slot in FACT’s favorite records of 2018. The white label lands this Friday (June 28) with three new tracks.
Listen to clips over at the Kompakt store and pre-order the record from Bandcamp. While you’re waiting for the record to arrive, enjoy a live version of last year’s ‘Look How Hard I’ve Tried’ below.

Listen to new track ‘Clumsy’ now.
PAN and Posh Isolation affiliate Oli Xl – whose track ‘Mimetic’ was one of our top club tracks of 2018 – will release his debut album next month.
Rogue Intruder, Soul Enhancer will land on the Swedish producer’s own Bloom imprint on July 22. According to the label, the album combines his love of pop music with his usual recipe of “club-oriented sounds and abstract sound design”.

The album will be the first release on Bloom, which is the successor to his previous label, W-I. The label will be an outlet not just for music, “but also art and other more unconventional projects”.
Oli XL made his debut in 2014 with an EP on W-I, and came to wider attention with a track on PAN’s Mono No Aware compilation in 2017 and Posh Isolation’s I Could Go Anywhere But Again I Go With You album in 2018.
Pre-order Rogue Intruder, Soul Enhancer on CD and digital formats here.

    Tracklist:
    01 ‘Cygnostik’
    02 ‘Liquid Love’

    From amplitude to LFOs.
In 2017, Ableton launched a website called Learning Music, which taught the basics of making music in a DAW. Its follow-up, Learning Synths, is an interactive set of lessons that teach the principles of synthesis.
The interactive site can be used in desktop and mobile browsers, and is easy enough for non-musicians and anyone without experience of synthesis to follow. Lessons cover everything from amplitude to envelopes, filters and LFOs.

If you already have some experience with patching synths there’s a “playground mode” you can use to mess around and a set of “recipes” that show you how to make kick drums, plucked bass, siren sounds and more.
Learning Synths comes less than a month after the release of Live 10.1, which added features such as user wavetables and a new delay device. Ableton also added a new set of CV tools for using modular synths with Live.

Bristol-born bass explorer Laksa explores the rave’s druggy depths.
When asked earlier this year what inspired him to start producing, Callum Ross, better known as Laksa, told Hyponik
it was simply “Bristol”. This makes sense: Ross’s deft blend of wobbly percussion, soundsystem-ready bass and narcotic synths is matched with the West Country city’s heritage of grit and pressure.
In the last few years, Ross has released music on Beneath’s Mistry imprint, Batu’s Timedance, Whities, Ilian Tape and Bastakiya Tapes, notching up a following for his hypnotic, dancefloor-ready constructions.
Ross also runs a regular radio show alongside re:ni for NTS called re:lax. It’s a club night too, pushing UK music and providing an hour before the DJs start for producers to test new material on the soundsystem – an invaluable provision for any beatmaker without access to a club setup, which is most of them.
Laksa’s FACT mix is a cross-genre, tempo-hopping journey through dance music’s past, present and future, blending drum & bass classics, big room techno belters, bass experiments and cuts from Bristol’s next wave. It explores the push and pull of clubbing and drugs, and is linked together with vocal snippets that only maximize the experience.

    Tracklist:
Lemon D – ‘Deep Space Remix Pt 2’
    Digital & Spirit – ‘Vision’
Keiska – ‘To Be, or not to be’ (club mix)
    Robert Hood – ‘Assembly’

Hidden gems on the 2019 Glastonbury lineup

Bewildered by the hundreds of acts at Glastonbury? The Guardian’s music editors pick the best names from lower down the bill

The must-see musical experience of the weekend is this brand-new stage from the Block9 crew, whose club spaces routinely provide the festival’s best after-hours moments. IICON will have artists playing from a giant sculpture of a head, and they’re a who’s who of cutting-edge electronics: galaxy-cartographer Larry Heard, dub geniuses Raime, thunderously angry poet Moor Mother, junglist poet Lee Gamble, South African pairing Okzharp and Manthe Ribane, and tons of forward-thinking techno: Bruce, Zenker Brothers, Karenn and more. Sleep all day, bring a carrier bag of falafels, and you could happily spend your entire weekend here.

Euphoria here we come! Fatboy Slim on his 'silent' Ibiza film with Julien Temple

Norman Cook has spent three decades blowing the Ibiza party crowd away. The DJ reveals why he teamed up with the director to capture 2,000 years of the island’s wild, strange history

Superstar DJ Fatboy Slim was recently thinking about – and questioning – what it is he does. “I’m just a middle-aged man playing a lot of loud squelching noises to young people, waving his arms around in the air. What really is that?” he asked himself.

But then it does make them dance and smile, and he, Norman Cook, still enjoys doing it. “It’s not what I would have chosen to be doing at this age” – 55 – “but I’m loving it so much. It’s the best job in the world because I love music, and my love of music involves sharing it with people.”

Ibiza: The Silent Movie is out 5 July and screens at Glastonbury on 26 June.

Autechre really know how to treat their fans. After debuting two hours of unreleased material from their ’89 – 93 archive during NTS Radio's WXAXRXP broadcast over the weekend, Rob Brown and Sean Booth have shared the entire mix for free.
Head over to the Autechre’s Bleep store page to grab the free download. Warp Tapes 89-93 features unreleased early material that shys away from the more experimental tendencies of their recent output in favour of simpler production and big tunes. One for the heads.
