Two years ago, we introduced our readers/listeners to the sound of The Bombay Royale with their first album 'You Me Bullet Love', evoking The Budos Band with tablas on acid in a Sergio Leone movie, or Quentin Tarantinow doing the soundtrack for a Bollywood movie… The Melbourne-based band is now back with a second long player, 'The Island Of Dr Electrico', an addictive new blend of 70s Indian or Hollywood soundtracks, surf guitar, strings & brass, psychedelia, tropical disco and funk. Heavily recommended non-mainstream world music!

Press Release :

Melbourne-based, world-conquering originators of vintage Bollywood-inspired surf, spy, disco and funk, The Bombay Royale, make an exhilarating return with their second album, The Island of Dr Electrico (out June 2 on HopeStreet Recordings via Rocket). From their unlikely beginnings in the suburban wilds of Melbourne, The Bombay Royale have taken their unique sound to audiences throughout Europe, UK and the USA, where their performances have been met with astonishment and critical acclaim.

The Bombay Royale's debut album You Me Bullets Love (HopeStreet Recordings, 2012) catapulted the 11-piece band (fronted by singers Parvyn Kaur Singh and Shourov Bhattacharya, and led by musical director Andy Williamson) on to the world stage. Featuring eight dazzling originals and two fascinating re-workings of long-forgotten Bollywood production numbers, You Me Bullets Love demonstrated the band's evolution from interpreters of 1960s and 1970s Bollywood soundtracks, to creators of a new and completely original music which synthesises Indian classical and folk music with Western styles such as surf, rock and disco. The album won universal critical acclaim, a place in iTunes Best of 2012, and #1 on the iTunes World Music charts. The last 12 months have seen the band debut their sound to international audiences, with tours of the US (Kennedy Centre, Global Fest), UK (Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Cambridge Folk Festival and WOMAD) and Europe (Fusion Festival - Germany and Sommarscen Festival - Sweden).

The backstory of The Bombay Royale's protagonists is as rich and enigmatic as their music. Parvyn Kaur Singh ("The Mysterious Lady") is the daughter of Dya Singh, a traditional shabad singer. Bollywood dance teacher by day and a rock chick by night, Singh is a product both of Melbourne's music scene and a lifetime of performing traditional Indian music. The band's male lead, Shourov "The Tiger" Bhattacharya, is a second generation Indian-Australian musician of Bengali descent whose day job is computer genius and IT entrepreneur. Band leader Andy "The Skipper" Williamson is saxophonist to the stars, who's clocked up over 2000 shows on the Australian festival circuit with bands such as Labjacd, the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and Diafrix as well as accumulating a record collection that's the envy of crate-diggers and a source of the band's collective inspirations.

All these adventures have led The Bombay Royale to their extraordinary new musical safari, The Island of Dr Electrico. Their triumphant second album is a varied musical landscape; at times lush and tropical, at other times an impenetrable swamp teeming with all manner of surprises. Migrating seabirds have long flown thousands of extra miles avoid Dr Electrico's blighted isle, leaving him alone to experiment with dark beats, primitive synthesizers and the raw emotion of kidnapped souls. The resulting sounds are a rich palette of classic cinema, from lonesome spaghetti to surf-rock, from psychedelia to spine-bending space disco, overlaid with the enticing voices of The Tiger and The Mysterious Lady.

The Bombay Royale have provided a tantalising first glimpse at The Island of Dr Electrico by unveiled a bold new video for lead single Henna Henna. A sweeping, exhilarating romp sung in Bengali with raunchy wild-west flourishes, Henna Henna comes with a "high concept" (pun intended) film clip, directed by Kess Broekman-Dattner (The Bamboos, Hermitude, Clare Bowditch). The mischievous video depicts The Mysterious Lady and her crack team's efforts to rid the dastardly Skipper of the key to his secret lair and rescue the Tiger, and other hijinks on a private jet somewhere above the Pacific Ocean. Henna Henna is out now on iTunes and available as an instant download, along with a bonus track, Wild Stallion Mountain, with album pre-orders.

The band has announced a Melbourne album launch party over two nights at Howler on Friday June 20 and Saturday June 21, with announcements to follow of a national album tour and a return tour to the US.

The Bombay Royale's new album The Island of Dr Electrico is out on June 2 in Australia on HopeStreet Recordings via Rocket, with international release date to follow on July 7.

The first single Henna Henna is out now on iTunes & available as an instant download with album pre-orders via iTunes and with all CD/LP pre-orders from hopest.re/drelectrico.

The Jays, a Jamaican vocal harmony trio composed of Lloyd Forrest, Errol Wilson and Leroy Hall, with Paris-based 70s roots music expert Grant Phabao at the helm of production, deliver some brothers greatness that gets into your soul. On the flip, a remix by Adrian Quesada, full of psychedelic twangling guitars drenched into reverb rings so perfectly with the harmonies of liberty that it could easily have been featured on Quentin Tarentino's latest soundtrack...

Grant Phabao The Jays African Man Adrian Quesada Remix

Press Release :
One month before the release of The Jays full-length album, 'Stepping up In Time', Paris DJs were letting off some steam with a new digital single, 'African Man', a massive reggae anthem - black, proud, and fighting for the future - along with two astonishing remixes from in-house producer Grant Phabao and Austin-based producer Adrian Quesada.

Following up on the limited 45 pressed in Jamaica 'Don't Sell Your Soul', from 2009, and the digital EP 'Stepping Up In Time', from january 2013, the Jamaican vocal harmony trio composed of Lloyd Forrest, Errol Wilson and Leroy Hall, with Paris-based 70s roots music expert Grant Phabao at the helm of production, deliver some brothers greatness that gets into your soul. Repatriation is on the central tenets of the Rastafari movement, even if The Jays are all Jamaican natives, they strongly feel that the truth from their ancestors makes them African men.

Along with this roots reggae burner come two astounding remixes, a swinging jazz version by Grant Phabao who proves once again he can tackle any kind of musical style, and, cherry on the cake, a latin funk remix from Texas' most interesting musical activist Adrian Quesada. The man has been putting our amazing music relentlessly with his many eclectic bands (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds, The Echocentrics…) and productions (Daniel Johnston, Hard Proof Afrobeat, The Funk Ark, Natalia Clavier…). His remix of The Jays' 'African Man', full of psychedelic twangling guitars drenched into reverb rings so perfectly with the harmonies of liberty that it could easily have been featured on Quentin Tarentino's latest soundtrack, 'Django Unchained'!

The full-length album from The Jays, 'Stepping up In Time' was released digitally in March 2013 through the Paris DJs label.

Now here's the 45 VINYL version of this digital single, edited, re-mixed and re-mastered during the summer 2014 by Grant Phabao. It was pressed at only 300 copies, half of which were pre-ordered through a crowdfunding campaign, so get it before everybody else does - the stocks won't last long!!
