Finally free of a label, Banks previews Broke With Expensive Taste.

Earlier this month, Azealia Banks announced that she had parted ways with Interscope, a move which would supposedly clear the way for her long-delayed debut album Broke With Expensive Taste.
New single ‘Heavy Metal and Reflective’ finds Banks as combative as ever over a synth-heavy beat produced by frequent collaborator Lil Internet. Stream it below; it’s due out on July 29 but is out now in New Zealand.

One of our artists to watch shares a new EP.

Manila's Idris Vicuña had planned to take his Eyedress project on a tour of Europe and the UK this year. Unfortunately, visa problems caused him to cancel his shows. “My sincerest apologies to my fans and promoters,” he writes on Facebook. “I feel terrible but there is nothing I can do now.”

Well, not exactly nothing: Vicuña has uploaded the six-track Egyptian Night Club EP to Soundcloud as a sign of good will. It’s loaded with the same woozy, After Dark-influenced synthscapes and ghostly vocals that we’ve come to expect from the young talent. The EP features frequent collaborator Skint Eastwood and sports some of the best song titles of the year in ‘Anything For Your Love (Alien Lap Dance)’ and ‘Pussy Killer (Sexorcist)’.
Stream Egyptian Night Club below; his debut album on XL’s Abeano imprint is expected soon.

Pete Tong on the DJ who has "consistently eluded" him
Highlights from Tong’s Reddit AMA.

Essential Mix master Pete Tong is the latest person to subject himself to an Ask-Me-Anything thread on Reddit, offering some insight into his two decades on BBC radiowaves.

When asked to name one artist he would love to have do an Essential Mix, Tong pointed to minimal techno figurehead Ricardo Villalobos. “[He] has consistently eluded me. We have talked about it, he hasn’t actually said no, but he can often be seen running out of the back door of restaurants in Ibiza when I enter.” It should be noted that Villalobos and Richie Hawtin teamed up for an Essential Mix back in 2005.

Also, when asked about a Burial Essential Mix, Tong offered this cryptic response: “burial fourtet cajmere green velvet …. I’m asking.” He might be having a bit of fun with the Burial-Four Tet “rumors,” because Four Tet dropped an Essential Mix in 2010, and Green Velvet (aka Cajmere) finally got his this week.

Sad news from Warwickshire.

A 20-year-old man has died after falling ill at the GlobalGathering dance music festival. The man was taken from Long Marston airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon to Warwick Hospital on Friday evening; he died early Saturday morning.

At this time, the death is being treated as unexplained until a post-mortem examination can take place. A spokesperson for the festival has commented: “Everyone at Global Gathering is deeply saddened by this tragic news. Our sincerest thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends at this time. We are assisting Warwickshire Police with their ongoing investigation.”

The two-day festival featured the Prodigy, David Guetta, Maya Jane Coles and many more. In 2012, GlobalGathering experienced its first death in what is sadly becoming a common occurrence at festivals around the world. [via Mixmag]
