After years spent discovering gems in Phonica's end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday, Phonica staff will pick out the five vinyl records you should grab this week. D.K. Drop (Antinote) Lo-fi pool party house with an edge of foggy psychedelia from Parisian producer D.K., whose eight-track album for Antinote mines territory not far removed from the boogie-vibing jams found on current favourites like Mood Hut and Future Times. Audio / Buy here TODD OSBORN T-Rhythm Trax Volume 1 (Running Back) A quintet of bossy rhythm tracks from Michigan producer Todd Osborn, snaking through frantic clangers and rumblers (‘Beat A’, Beat B’) through moody pace-setters (‘Beat C’, ‘Itshoustrumental’) and a chopped vocal refresher (‘Beatapella’). Great tracks names, obviously. Audio / Buy here FOUR TET Beautiful Rewind (Remixes) (Text) Four Tet brings out the small-but-perfectly-formed guns for this remix EP, with Detroit DJ-on-the-rise Jay Daniel reshaping ‘Aerial’, stargazing disco-house newbie Seven Davis Jr doing his thing on ‘Buchla’ (as heard on his cracking FACT mix) and Brixton machine-soul maker Photomachine taking on ‘Crush’. Audio / Buy here GLOWING PALMS/BELL TOWERS/VARIOUS ARTISTS Ruf Kutz 9 (RK#9) (Ruf Kutz) The odd numbers in the Ruf Kutz series are usually dedicated to edits, but due to “congestion” in the market, label boss Ruf Dug has put together a four-track slab of covers. You have to work out what they are yourself, mind, and “don’t bother suing cos there’s no fuckin money anywhere.” Audio / Buy here SASAC Hyperion (Omega Supreme) Stockholm native SASAC pulls out eight tracks of fruity sophistifunk for Portland, OR label Omega Supreme, with period piece Linn drums, smoky pads and some very naughty guitar arrangements to usher you to a higher plane.
