Berlin-based American Juan Ramos is set to debut on San Francisco's Friends with Benefits label (who recently dropped a 12" from Hard Ton backed with a Matrixxman remix) next week with his The Mariner (For G.G.) EP. Here we have the record's title cut, a swimming piece of house which offers an alluring assemblage of water-logged melodies amidst its breezy swing. Fortified by a thick kick and evolving layers of percussion, "The Mariner" patiently builds a dense atmosphere across its six-minute run, resulting in a track that is unassuming in its presence, but with a groove that is nearly impossible to escape. Ramos' full The Mariner (For G.G.) EP will see its official release on July 29, and can be previewed via the player found after the jump. read more |

Somewhere amongst the bushes and rocks pictured above is Crushfield, a Canadian producer who here offers his take on Animals as Leaders' "The Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing." On his rework, Crushfield loosely drapes the original track's math-rock-style guitar atop heavy-handed rhythmic elements: straightforward kicks and snares trade off hits as crisp hats fill the space in between.

All week long, XLR8R will be taking a closer look at some of our favorite record shops from around the globe. Check out the entire 'Record Store Week' series here. On Co-Op 87's stereo, co-owner Mike Catalano is enjoying an LP by Latin composer and lounge cult-figure Juan García Esquivel. Catalano's business partner, Ben Steidel, voices his approval of the seemingly bargain-bin fare and says, "Yeah, people are really quick to dismiss records like this." Catalano agrees. "Yeah, there's pretty remarkable stuff out there that's not cared about anymore, for sure." This shared infatuation with the obscure and underappreciated sides of music history is something that drives Co-Op 87; though the shop features the usual sort of rock, soul, jazz, hip-hop, house, disco, and country offerings, sections of the store have also been dedicated to private press LPs, Bollywood, calypso, Irish folk, and even cheesecake album covers. read more |

Montreal producer Phoebé Guillemot will soon release a new collection of tunes under her RAMZi alias via her own Pygmy Animals imprint. Pulled from the forthcoming Bébites cassette is "Nuptial Bébites," an adventurous track that is flush with tribal percussion, sci-fi tones, and unwieldy rhythmic snippets. Still, the Canadian artist finds a way to make it all feel cohesive—teetering atop of the wobbly beat, Guillemot renders a melody from tuned percussion, reinforcing it with a relaxed bassline and splashes of fuzzy chords. Expected to drop soon, the rest of RAMZi's upcoming Bébites cassette can be previewed after the jump. read more |

Beyond that, there weren't a whole lot of details available. That has been remedied today. read more |
