100 Word Review: Dado Moroni - Five For John

Label: Via Veneto Jazz/Jando Music

Released: February 2014

For his latest project pianist Dado Moroni has assembled a quintet including tenor player Max Ionata, with whom he worked on the Two For Duke album. This album, Five For John, pays tribute to the music and jazz vision of the legendary John Coltrane. This eleven-track set includes versions of ‘Trane tunes as well as compositions by artists such as McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and Fred Lacey, who all worked with the great man, as well as a couple of Moroni originals. The versions of Naima and Latino Suite stand out in particular, but it’s a fine album all round.
