When you think of 2013 in the dance music scene, you have to think of Daft Punk. The resurgence of their disco french house sound skyrocketed the mainstream and showcased that dance music isn’t about the untz or the drops. It is about the rhythm, the grooves, the melodies. They also helped with the resurgence of Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers. Their album Random Access Memories was one of the biggest albums of 2013. Today, besides gracing the cover of the Wall Street Journal as the winner of their Entertainment Innovator of 2013, Daft Punk has been named by AskMen.com as one of the Top 49 men of 2013. Hitting the #49 spot, Daft Punk are featured on a list that includes Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla), Lebron James, Vladimir Putin and more. This is was AskMen.com had to say about why Daft Punk made the list. The reclusive duo from France came came back in a big way in 2013 with the release of their disco-inspired Random Access Memories. The hit single from the album, ‘Get Lucky’, was the second-highest selling single of 2013 (after Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’) and was impossible to escape from this summer. Daft Punk also experienced their fair share of controversy, first being unmasked in the leaked photo and then committing the grave error of cancelling on Stephen Colbert, who subsequently issued a hilarious takedown of the group. But despite all the publicity, the duo have managed to stay elusive to press and fans alike.Do you think Daft Punk on the correct spot on the list? Who else from the dance music scene should have been involved? |

As the #1 DJ in America, Kaskade is one of the most popular DJs in the world. His latest album Atmosphere has been one of the most talked about albums of the year. Insomniac Events today have announced that Kaskade will join the team to score the original sound track to the new EDC documentary EDC 2013: Under the Electric Sky. Also announced, KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley has been brought on as well in the position of Music Supervisor and Musical Director. In June, EDC Las Vegas brought over 345,000 people to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for 3 days on incredible music and production. Kaskade is a GRAMMY-nominated artist who released his eighth studio album, Atmosphere, on September 10, 2013, and has scored 12 Top 10 hits on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay Chart. His 2011 double-album, Fire & Ice, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and earned him his first GRAMMY Award nomination. Jason Bentley is music director of Santa Monica based NPR affiliate KCRW and host of the influential music programs Morning Becomes Eclectic weekdays and the dance-focused Metropolis every Saturday night. In addition, Bentley has worked as music supervisor and soundtrack producer for TRON: Legacy with Daft Punk, and The Matrix trilogy, among other film projects. Kaskade and Jason understand the energy and passion that EDC fans bring to the festival. By working together, I'm confident they will create a soundtrack which brings back memories for those that have attended EDC in the past, while also inspiring those who have never joined in the experience. – Pasquale RotellaEDC 2013: Under the Electric Sky follows the journey of several festivalgoers as they make their way from their hometowns to the EDC Las Vegas festival grounds. The film will chronicle their unique experience through the event that has touched the lives of thousands all over the world. Beginning in 1997 with a few thousand revelers in Los Angeles, the Electric Daisy Carnival has become the largest dance music event in North America. The festival is known for its immersive environment featuring state-of-the-art stage production, pyrotechnics and lighting, roaming theatrical performers and dancers, full-scale carnival rides and interactive art installations. |

After being named the #1 DJ in the world, you usually have to do something drastic and massive with your next release. That is exactly what Hardwell did today. Hardwell premiered his new track ‘Dare You’ today featuring Matthew Koma through Shazam, becoming the first artist ever to release music exclusively through the site. With the video featured above, Shazam it, and you two could then listen to the entire song and listen to the track by watching the video that is provided. The video features footage from Hardwell’s performance at ADE in which he premiered ‘Dare You’. The track features a catchy synth top line, with a guitar progression during the verses of the song in which Matthew Koma’s signature vocals sway through the melodies. Pete Tong will also be premiering the track this Friday on his BBC Radio 1 Essential Selection show for millions of fans to enjoy. It is great to see Hardwell stay away from the massive electro bass drops and instead focus on the melodies and the rhythms of the song. ‘Dare You’ will be available November 13th on iTunes in the US and will be available in January 2014 in the UK. |

This past weekend, Los Angeles got a little HARD. Gary Richard’s and his HARD Presents… team turned the LA Historic Park into one of the most intense and mystifying places around with their annual HARD Day of the Dead. An action-packed lineup left fans in eager anticipation of what was to come. Headlining acts like Giorgio Moroder, Deadmau5, Skrillex, Pretty Lights, Calvin Harris, NERO, Baauer, Jamie Jones, and much much more had a little something for everyone. The festival consisted of 4 stages – HARD Stage, HARDer Stage, Red Bull Discotheque Stage, Underground Stage. Each stage offered a little bit of something different and something that was just a little unejoyable. At the HARD Stage, artists would perform on an elevated platform that outlined the shape of a house. As one patron put it too me, “At night, I bet it is going to look sick, but until then, I just feel so far away from the artist. Very disconnected.” Several artists at the HARD Stage brought their own unique stage set up, as Skrillex had a giant pumpkin, Boys Noize had the giant skull, and Deadmau5 had his cube. There were many incredible sets at this stage as Saturday, people could only talk about Skrillex and NERO’s set from that stage. Oliver set the crowd off early in the day with their unique groove and rhythm, that by the end of their set, had an empty festival dance floor into a packed one. One of the more disappointing sets from the stage the first day, was Zed’s Dead. Having been a huge fan of Zed’s Dead in the past, this performance was very unimpressive, and left me with the opinion that they were just conforming for the festival. Saturday also saw the movement of Cirez D from the Underground Stage to the HARDer Stage. HARDer Stage had one of the weakest performances of the first day of the festival with Maxim. His set was not very lively and his MC seemed like she didn’t know what she was doing. We were very much excited to see a female MC on stage, but she flopped completely. This stage did have some of the best performances of Day 1, and Jack Beats had a massive crowd jumping up and down. The Bloody Beetroots were hands down the BEST performance of the entire festival. Their live shows are something that can’t be described, but only witnessed. Fans were stretched out all across the field to catch a glimpse of Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo and his live set. The energy and excitement that radiated out of the speakers and through the stunningly crystal-clear LED screens was mesmerizing. Day 2 saw a day of conflict and angst as there were so many important artists to try to catch but not enough time to do it. Walking into the festival, we were greeted with one of the most impressive artists on the bill, BRANCHEZ. His set was spectacular. The trap beats, the rhythms, the bass pounding through the speakers, left us wanting more. GTA showcased why Rihanna wanted them on tour with her, why their death to genres is so powerful, and why fans yearn for their music. GTA’s performance had fans jumping, twisting, shouting, loving life all at the same time. It was mesmerizing. The Red Bull Discotheque Stage featured some of the biggest and best names in in Nu Disco/Indie Dance music today. Having missed Kavinsky the first day, I vowed to make it over there. Headed in just as soon as XXXY to the stage and couldn’t be happier. While it was cool and brisk outside, it was warm and exciting underneath the tent. SKREAM was also a very exciting performance. Having been known in the scene for so long as a dubstep and d&b guy, it was incredible to see him switch it up. The HARD Stage of course featured some of the biggest acts of the festival. Eric Prydz after killing it the day previous as Cirez D on the HARDer Stage, did the exact same thing for his performance as Eric Prydz, but like the melodic, groovy house at home and instead intensified his beats. Calvin Harris played many of the mainstream tracks that have been featured in his sets throughout the summer time, but still, the fan engagement happening during his set, you could not deny the experience. And finally, Deadmau5, with his unique mau5head with the pins and needles came on to a roaring crowd. Having said on twitter that he was going to have a special set planned for everyone, I was a little disappointed; along with many other people as well. There was nothing truly special about the set it felt like. While there were many incredible tracks, I couldn’t pull myself to really get involved. Besides the music, there were many other things to the festival. There were rides for fans to enjoy. I took part of the massive drop one, and it left my heart beating, my hands shaking and my adrenaline pounding. At the massive Motorolla Tower, fans could create their own kandi. A line of food trucks meant that people never had to go hungry. There were two beer gardens for fans to go and quench their thirsts, but at the beer garden by the HARDer Stage, there was only one entrance that left people squeezed together for a long period of time, trying to get in, which opening another section could have alleviated this potential hazard. The hired staff at the festival was also at times incompetent. It seemed that no one knew what was going on or what was allowed. My photographer was treated very rudely by one security guard. Press is allowed to take photos of a new artists for the first 3 songs, or roughly 15 minutes. When a new artist came on at the HARD Stage, this security guard pushed my female photographer and told her she was not allowed in because she didn’t have the proper credentials. That is when another security guard came in and slapped some sense into the other one, but it was a situation that never needed to happen. Another thing that could have been better set up was access for press photographers. To get to each stage, a photographer can go into the press area entrance by the HARDer Stage, and then walk around to the different stages. But when you get to the HARD Stage, the wouldn’t let you back through there. So my photographer, who is walking around with thousands of dollars of equipment, has to walked through a packed crowd, who is jumping, waving arms, some of them inebriated, and who if they break her stuff, wouldn’t have to do anything about it. I just wish that there was just a little more respect treated about. All-in-all, HARD Day of the Dead was an experience. Incredible music, great environment, and loving fans who weathered out the chill night conditions to party and celebrate like none other. With sugar skulls lining the festival grounds of the patrons as the walked to their next artist, they knew that they were going to leave with lasting memories. Photo Credit Belongs To Åsa Haleby |
