Every year, Markus Schulz pays homage to an incredible city with a new mix compilation. It started in 2011 with Prague ’11. 2012 saw the next installment with Los Angeles ’12. Now, with 2013 slowly coming to an end, Markus Schulz is set to release the latest in the series, named after one of South America’s musical hot spots. Buenos Aires ’13 was released on October 4th off Armada. Markus Schulz decided to choose Buenos Aires for the connection that he has with the city and the people. Markus and the fans weathered the elements during his set at UMF Buenos Aires. He celebrated the cities bicentennial with a massive performance for the people. He performed an unprecedented 15-hour set at Mandarine Nightclub, showcasing what makes him one of the most sought after DJs in the world. What Markus Schulz has done with Buenos Aires ’13 is phenomenal. The majestic power and elegance that Markus seamlessly drives through the 2-discs is something that has been missing from most compilations as of late. Buenos Aires ’13 takes the listener on a true musical journey, through low underlying beats, powerful synths, driving bass and the highs and lows throughout the entire mix. The mix opens up with one of Buenos Aires very own artists Marscela and his smooth musical masterpiece ‘Momento de Gloria‘. The track doesn’t feature massive synths, powerful drops or any of that. It is a beautiful tracks that is fulls of strings and echoing chords that perfectly opens the album. From there, Markus Schulz takes Buenos Aires ’13 on a deeper, darker side of trance music with its low key notes and enveloping progressions. CD 1 is full on many incredible surprises and pure trance magic. Markus Schulz unleashes his alter-ego Dakota with the deep and dark track ‘Barracas‘. This track signifies the whole envelopment of the first disc of Buenos Aires ’13. With its deep undertones and heavy melodies ‘Barracas’ is one of the highlights from the album. Markus also showcases the Shadows of Coldharbours Recordings Remix of his smash hit ‘Nothing Without Me‘ featuring Ana Diaz. This remix takes away the big synths and massive leads an instead switches in melodic tones and low rhythms that make the track something extremely special. Markus Schulz also showcases his newest track ‘Remember This‘. Other suprises on the album include the new Grube & Hovspeian track ‘Palermo‘, the track from Markus Schulz’s student KhoMha ‘Cyclone‘, and Rex Mundi with two tracks featured in the first disc with ‘Backpain‘ and ‘Aureolo‘. Disc 2 takes over where disc 1 left off. It opens up with an incredible track from Protoculture entitled ‘Talisman’. Protoculture who is known for his massive chords and powerful progressions, slows it down a bit, giving ‘Talisman‘ more groove and rhythm, than power and intensity. But listening to it, you can know right away it is a Protoculture. A real takeaway from this second disc of Buenos Aires ’13 is from KhoMha once again and his track Dimensional. Coming up as the third track on the album, ‘Dimensional‘ opens up with a melodic and beautiful piano break before taking over with the massive synths and major rhythm. Digital X blows the disc out of the water with the track ‘Stratosphere‘. In a mix with some many incredible tracks all vying to stand out about the rest, ‘Stratosphere‘ does just that with its perfect melodies, sublte key strokes, rhythmic toplines and electronic grooves that swallows the listener into a state of pure emptiness and brings you into a musical utopia. Markus Schulz also elects to include the track ‘The Battle‘ from Fisherman & Hawkins vs. Nifra. Fisherman & Hawkins first grabbed our attention when they were featured by Ben Gold on the second disc of The Sound of Garuda Chapter 3. This time ‘The Battle‘ signifies just that. The synth-key topline rhythm versus the powerful drum beat battle each other for supremacy of the song, while mixing and coexisting beautifully with one-another. A track that stands out, Markus Schulz puts his Coldharbour Remix on Solarstones hit track ‘Solarcoaster‘. Markus has added a new intensity, a new dynamic to a track that was great to begin with. It has pure trance with the dynamic of Markus intertwined throughout the entire piece. Buenos Aires ’13 ends where the mix compilation started. Marscela returns to help close out the album with the track ‘Viage Completo‘. The track name translate to complete travel, which is general terms means journey has end. It is a smooth, subtle track that slowly winds down the album giving it the perfect end of this magical journey. What Markus Schulz did with Buenos Aires ’13 is breathtaking. You go through the ups and down of the darker, deeper side of trance that not many people explore. It brings an incredible connection to the listener with the music and most importantly Markus Schulz. It was great to see Markus showcase his love for the capital of Argentina in this incredible mix. Buenos Aires’ 13 is hands down this authors favorite mix compilation of the year. Buy Album Here |
