It is determined by a group of journalists, broadcasters, bloggers and programmers from across Canada. This year the winning album will receive $50,000.

The winner will be decided upon by a grand jury at the Polaris Music Prize gala, which will be held on Sept. 21 at the Carlu in Toronto.

Past winners have included Tanya Tagaq, Feist, Arcade Fire and Patrick Watson.
