Lionel Loueke Trio On JazzSet Posted: 13 Mar 2014 01:30 PM PDT   Loueke is one of the most distinctive artists on the world-music scene. Loueke gets African-style rhythms going, tapping on his guitar and using his effects pedals at the Kennedy Center. Lionel Loueke was born in Benin, West Africa, in 1973. As a youngster, he sang and played percussion, but didn't really take up the guitar until the age of 17. Loueke was so gifted on the instrument that he was sent to study music at the Ivory Coast's Institute of Art. He continued on to the American School of Modern Music in Paris, where he turned heads, and in 1999 came to America on scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. His groups, including the renowned La Perfecta, revolutionized Latin music in the 1960s and '70s. His records number more than 30 as a leader, and he's won nine Grammy Awards. Kenny Barron And Dave Holland On JazzSet Posted: 13 Feb 2014 11:20 AM PST   JazzSet celebrates the 70th birthday of NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron with new duets featuring bassist Dave Holland at the Kennedy Center's Family Theater. Plus, hear a solo Barron set from the Caramoor Jazz Festival. Barron has released more than 40 albums as a leader. He's also been a tireless jazz educator, for 28 years at Rutgers University, followed by Manhattan School of Music and the Julliard School in New York. In 2010, he was named an NEA Jazz Master. Barron first hooked up with Dave Holland at a recording session for Barron's 1985 album Scratch. As Barron says, "We met at a record date of mine. There were no rehearsals; we just played. I think that record won an award in Paris." They sensed they had a special rapport, but it has taken time for these two busy bandleaders to fully explore playing as a duo.
