Brian Eno wins Giga-Hertz Award for contribution to electronic music

Producer and musician takes home €10,000 for his lifetime of ‘musical transgression’ at prestigious ceremony


Brian Eno has won what is arguably the world’s biggest electronic music prize, receiving €10,000 (£8,000) for his lifetime of “musical transgressions and ... innovative thinking in the field of internet and sound installation”. The Giga-Hertz Award for Electronic Music, presented by the German broadcaster SWR and the ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics, has previously been awarded to electronic music composers like Pierre Boulez, Pauline Oliveros and Jonathan Harvey.

Eno accepted the award as part of a gala at Karlsruhe’s Imatronic Festival on Saturday. ZKM director Peter Weibel called the 66-year-old a “mastermind of the recording studio”, according to Deutsche Welle, hailing his ability to tailor “musical clothes” for other artists.

          Listen to SZA's 'Babylon', featuring Kendrick Lamar
          The TDE labelmates team-up on a new version of the song.

          SZA premiered ‘Babylon’ last month, before Kendrick Lamar added a verse to the DJ Dahi-produced track. The new version appears on SZA’s Z EP, which is due out tomorrow.

          Stream ‘Babylon’ below. Along with Lamar, the EP features Chance the Rapper (on the XXYYXX-produced ‘Childs Play’) and Isiah Rashad, with production by Toro Y Moi, Mac Miller, Emile Haynie and more.

           Red Bull Music Academy feature film up for free digital release
          In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Red Bull Music Academy invited award-winning director Ralf Schmerberg to create a full-length feature film. Shooting during the 2013 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in New York, Schmerberg’s What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music, explores the challenges that a life in music can bring.

          Available for free digital download from 18th February from RBMA’s official website, the film features Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Brian Eno, Just Blaze, Giorgio Moroder, Erykah Badu, Nile Rodgers, Rakim, Skream, Q-Tip, Thundercat and many other artists who have either lectured or been studio tutors at the Academy.
