Daft Punk cleaned up at the Grammys on Sunday night, but 20 years ago their sound was anything but cleaned up. Prior to forming Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo were members of a guitar-based band called Darlin', along with drummer Laurent Brancowitz, who would later go on to join Phoenix.
Darlin' took their name from a Beach Boys song, and they only ever released four tracks. Their first EP, released in 1993, included a droning song called "Cindy, So Loud" and a deconstructed cover of the Beach Boys song from which they took their name. The release also inspired the name of Darlin's next incarnation, as British music magazine Melody Maker called it "a daft, punky thrash."

Two years later, now without Brancowitz on drums, Darlin' contributed two tracks to a compilation called De La Viande Pour Le Disco? One of these tracks, "Untitled 18," was a peek at what Daft Punk would sound like when they started releasing music in 1997. The other, "Untitled 33," was more guitar stuff.
