Though we here at XLR8R HQ were elated to have Werkdiscs label boss and resident Ninja Tune experimentalist Actress helm this week's exclusive podcast, the mix was noticeably devoid of the DJ/producer born Darren Cunningham's own productions. The London artist didn't tease a single clip from his upcoming Ghettoville album throughout the tracklist, but he's since made up for that lack of new material, allowing one of the record's dense and mesmerizing cuts to be streamed in full. read more |

An affably funky groove backed by a strong four-to-the-floor beat helps generate a suave atmosphere that the video for "Contonéate"—a track from Columbian producer Sano's self-titled debut LP for Cómeme, the same one we posted as a free download back in October—does not fail to emulate. read more |

Glasgow-based artist Jon Phonics lends a sensual approach to dusty textures, warping them around his funky and slack hip-hop rhythms. Pairing with Trinidadian Londoner Tabanca for the Domino Effect EP (out now via Push & Run), the producer's collaboration with the singer on "Mind Games" is a heady, atmospheric R&B piece with pulsing low-end synths and misty percussion, anchored by Tabanca's yearning vocals. Pedestrian, a rising UK artist who reworks "Mind Games" for the remix-only second half of Domino Effect, transforms the original song into an easygoing, orchestral cut of jungle-referencing music, stretching out Tabanca's vocals until they smear with reverb. The three original tracks from Jon Phonics' and Tabanca's Domino Effect EP can be streamed after the jump. read more |

It shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with Ren Schofield's musical output that Adhesive, his new four-track EP under his current Container moniker, makes a wicked racket. After all, Schofield has been producing some variation on experimental noise since 2005. That said, the Container project is arguably his most focused attempt at music making, one that reassembles his influences into a propulsive industrial-noise-techno package. The first two Container LPs (each confusingly called LP) and the Treatment EP placed Schofield within a larger global movement, alongside artists like Regis (a.k.a. Karl O'Connor of British Murder Boys), Function, Cut Hands, and more minimal outliers like Silent Servant and Powell. Now, he's returned with Adhesive, the most hard-charging and brutal Container outing to date.

It's easy to overuse tags like icon or legend, but when talking about veteran British reggae DJ and broadcaster David 'Ram Jam' Rodigan, both terms seem appropriate. Since beginning his career as a host on Radio London in the early '70s, Rodigan has gradually garnered a reputation as one of the most popular and respected names in reggae and dancehall. Over the years, he's fronted shows on influential radio stations including Kiss, Capital, and the BBC's 1Xtra and Radio 2, had his voice sampled in tracks by the likes of Breakage and Caspa, and even had his own station in one of the Grand Theft Auto games. Rodigan is also one of the genre's most prolific DJs, having played to thousands and clashed with some of the biggest soundsystems in the game. Next week, Ministry of Sound will be releasing its latest Masterpiece mix, with Rodigan at the helm. To mark the occasion, we've asked the storied selector to take part in our Trainwreck series, and he's met the request by recounting a couple of the most awkward moments from his DJ career, one involving a misguided jockey outfit and the other a crowd that couldn't believe its eyes. read more |

Based in Barcelona, the AvantRoots label prides itself on a catalog which focuses on the more soul-soaked ends of hybridized electronic music. Now in its fifth year as an imprint, AvantRoots has put together Waves, a 13-track compilation which gathers some of the label's best work from its handful of years, along with a number of unreleased cuts. One such exclusive is "Jungle Fever," credited to Barcelona duo Pulshar, who, incidentally, is also repsonsible for piecing together the Waves comp in its mixed form. read more |
