Madonna, Queen Latifah, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis to preside over mass wedding at Grammys

You want your big day to be a memorable one – and you wouldn't soon forget if you tied the knot with Queen Latifah presiding over the nuptials, as Madonna, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert perform their Grammy-nominated song, "Some Love."

If rumours prove true, dozens of real-life couples will be able to remember their wedding day exactly that way, because they're going to get hitched en masse on stage at tonight's Grammys.

According to the New York Times, the weddings will include 34 couples of various ages, races and sexual orientations — so the song, which has become a marriage equality anthem, is especially fitting.

Mr. Lewis, the group’s producer, told the New York Times that the weddings “will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.”

Of course, gay marriage is already a hot-button issue, especially in many U.S. states, so having same sex marriages happen live on stage makes for a strong statement — and one that will not doubt stir controversy.

“I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy,” Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Grammys, told the Times.

The idea came last fall when Ehrlich met with Macklemore and Lewis to brainstorm ideas for their performance. Because people sometimes get married at their concerts, the musicians suggested taking it a step further at the Grammys.

From there, a casting agency put out a call for couples who were told the ceremony was going to take place on live TV — but they weren't told which show — and they had to sign confidentiality agreements. It was only in the last couple of weeks that they were told they would be married at the Grammys.

Among those getting hitched on Sunday night is Mr. Lewis’s sister Laura, who was already engaged to her boyfriend, Alex.

“A night that is already tremendous for me, for the music,” Mr. Lewis said, “but to have my sister get married and my family there watching it — that makes it a whole other level of amazing.”

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are nominated for a total of seven Grammys, including song of the year for “Same Love.”
