Robyn, Leo Kalyan, Evening Hymns, more: songs you need to hear this week

Each week, staff from CBC Music, Radio 2, 3 and CBC regions across the country collect songs they just can't get out of their heads, and make a case for why you should listen, too. Press play below and discover new songs for your listening list.

Let us know in the comments or via @CBCMusic what catches your ear, or if you have a new song you just can't stop playing.

Robyn and La Bagatelle Magique, ‘Set Me Free’

Robyn is always my favourite when she’s dancing on her own, but this new track has her collaborating as part of a project called La Bagatelle Magique, and “Set Me Free” is a disco banger that’ll settle nicely into your living room party or at a club. This new project is with Robyn’s touring keyboardist, Markus Jägerstedt, and formerly with Christian Falk (who died last year). This is the second track of a mini album, which should come out Aug. 7.

Liam Corcoran, ‘Let It Be Now’

Liam Corcoran has been shining a light of songwriting beauty on the Canadian music scene for more than a decade now, and his upcoming solo album, ROM-DROM, is proof that his light is shining brighter than ever. The album is a powerhouse performance of P.E.I. talent, showcasing contributions from acts like the Meds, North Lakes, English Words and Tim Chaisson. "Let It Be Now," produced by Dale Murray, is the first single, and it’s a song that sways with beautiful backing vocals braided in with simple, powerful piano and guitar riffs.

Murder Murder, ‘Sweet Revenge’

Sudbury, Ontario's Murder Murder exclusively plays what the band calls "murder ballads." And if sweet bluegrass odes to revenge aren't enough to pique your interest, check out the dirty halftime groove in this tune. Flipping a genre on its head has never been more subversive, or fun.

Chk Chk Chk (!!!), ‘Sick Ass Moon’

California's dance-punk band Chk Chk Chk (!!!) is back with its first two tracks since 2013, “Sick Ass Moon” and “Freedom! '15” (George Michael reference there?). The band (pronounced “check check check”) just announced the release of its sixth studio album, As If last week. If you get a chance to see these guys live, pounce! Their energy is crazy good.

Evening Hymns, ‘All My Life I Have Been Running’

"A whisper as effective as an explosion" is how Jonas Bonnetta, frontman of Toronto's Evening Hymns, describes the upcoming Evening Hymns album, Quiet Energies. After listening to their new single, "All My Life I Have Been Running," that analogy not only makes sense, but it explains the intimate aspect for the singer's logic, and why these whispers can cause such a powerful imprint. Bonnetta accesses his most veracious attribute while telling this story: his emotional unsettling with the death of his father, something that played a large thematic role in Evening Hymns' 2013 release, Spectral Dusk. This song is about accepting who you are, and finding clarity in those things that define you — for better or worse. — KM

Leo Kalyan, ‘Golden Age’

When you’ve spent an afternoon in the sizzling summer sun and you jump into deliciously cool water, this is what you will hear: Leo Kalyan’s “Golden Age” from his latest EP, Silver Lining. Is it dream pop? Is it lo-fi funk? Synesthesia? I don’t know, but I promise this will be the most refreshing track you hear all summer.

Leon, ‘Tired of Talking’

“Tired of Talking” is the debut single from up-and-coming Swedish singer-songwriter Leon. It blends the genres of folk, electro-pop, and soul in a defiant and refreshingly self-assured track. Whether you are looking for a soundtrack for a kiss-off or a dance-off, this song is catchy, confident and, simply, great pop music.

Concealer, ‘Place to Hide’

Get ready, you're about to surf some lo-fi new waves, and you're going to love it. "Place to Hide" is from Concealer's upcoming debut LP, Fêted:Fetid. The song moves from disturbed soundscapes to beautifully arranged verse in five minutes. The group describes "Place to Hide" as what you should expect to get from Concealer: "We hope it communicates the sparring between stoicism and flamboyance that takes place in our duo," says Mark Davis, one-half of Concealer. If you like music that takes you somewhere without ever leaving your living room, strap in and let Concealer's "Place to Hide" take you on an audio armchair journey. — KM
