Young Empire
The Gates
Stream to Sept. 3
It’s hard to believe that The Gates is Young Empires' debut. It’s such a confident, cohesive record, full of alt-pop anthems and tracks ripe for club-ready remixes. Stream The Gates above one week before its release, and pre-order the album here.
The Gates feels and flows like an album by a band that’s already scored a ton of number one hits. And in a way, they have. The Toronto-based group’s 2012 debut EP, Wake All My Youth, was a hit and has kept them too busy touring to follow up with anything as basic as, you know, writing music. But it’s a great problem to have, particularly when it affords a band the luxury of getting it right the first time.
Over the last few months, leading up to The Gates’ release, Young Empires has dropped singles, earning raves from the likes of Spin and Fader. "Sunshine" alone has surpassed one million streams on Spotify in fewer than two months. The production stands out more than the lyrics, but the polish and sheen of these spacey, hook-happy songs is what makes them fun if frictionless. Sometimes you just want to throw your head back and let a giant chorus swell inside your chest and shout into the sky with your best friends, simulating and remembering what it is to be carefree even if you’re really not. This is the soundtrack to that feeling, no matter how old you are.
