The third single to come from Owiny Sigoma Band's sophomore album 'Power Punch' is 'Sunken Wrecks – a thundering, hypnotic groove laced with flickering nyatiti licks, fierce nyiduonge drums, spacey fx and Jesse Hackett's haunting vocals.
"It was fun recording to drum machines and click with the [Kenyan] guys. They were really keen to experiment with pushing tempos and also playing bits of synths and vocoder. Charles seemed to gravitate towards the OP1 Teenage Engineering keyboard I had borrowed off Damon Albarn for the session. It was inspiring to watch how a drummer untrained in the piano approached playing. You can hear some of those interesting results on 'Sunken Wrecks'." Jesse Hackett Pilooski steps up on remix duties, easing the tempo and highlighting the bump and swing of those nyiduonge drums. The result is a loose, loping percussive bomb adorned with sonar echoes and rich, sweeping strings, bolstered by booming, grainy 808s.
