Beatport: The #BeatportDecade in Techno @ Musique Non Stop

#BeatportDecade is a series celebrating the past 10 years of dance music, providing insight into the artists, tracks and labels that drove the evolution of its sound and culture, and interviews with the people who made history.

In many ways, electronic dance music as we know it began with techno. In Detroit, in 1981, to be precise, with a fusion of black American funk and imported electro-pop that gave birth, almost simultaneously, to A Number of Names’ “Sharevari” and Cybotron’s “Alleys of Your Mind.” It all starts there.
And yet, for much of the past decade, techno has been the underdog, overshadowed by house – the yang to techno’s yin. (House music, a descendant of disco, evolved in parallel and emerged at almost the same time, but it got its name later.) You could say that the two genres have swapped places in the popular imagination. Ten years ago, if someone asked you what kind of music you were into, you might have said “techno” and meant “techno and tech-house and progressive and minimal”; these days, you’d probably say “house” to cover a similar spectrum. Everything is house these days, or it wants to be, anyway, from Tiësto to Disclosure. Techno, meanwhile, has gone back underground. But to get a sense of how wildly dynamic electronic dance music can be, techno makes for an excellent case study – both for the way the music itself has evolved and for the ways that its fortunes have risen and fallen over the past decade.
Flash back to 2004, a year before #BeatportDecade kicks off. Dance music was hardly at its healthiest, and Abe Duque‘s “What Happened?” offered a lament for the ailing scene. Over a rollicking, bare-bones groove – shuffling drums, two-note bassline, careening bleeps, all of it resolutely old-school in feel – the New York producer reeled off a list of shuttered clubs and bygone styles, with one notable gesture of defiance. (“Acid… what happened? Hip-house… what happened? Techno… what’s happening!”) Tapping into a vein of steely focus that stretched back to Jeff Mills‘ “The Bells,” Robert Hood‘s “Minimal Nation,” and DBX‘s “Losing Control,” Duque’s track offered proof that minimal techno was thriving. Ironically, by the end of the decade, it was minimal techno – or simply “minimal,” as it came to be known – that would prompt such a large-scale exodus from techno to house.

Gabriel & Dresden has been and always will be a favorite of Mixjunkies. We love to see them live and we can’t remember the last time we heard a mix of theirs that we didn’t enjoy. We’re loving this mix just as we have the all the others and with the signature Gabriel & Dresden mashups in the mix it’s even better. Take a listen and see for yourself.

We say new music you say “Yes way!” We’ll at least we hope thats what you say… In our travels scrounging the interwebs for the best EDM we stumbled upon this cheeky little show from a man named Cheets (no relation to Strongbad’s “The Cheet”). Mostly because we saw the guest mix from Prok and Fitch who we love. We got to listening and we dig. A little house, a little funky groove action with a techy pinch we like the recipe. Have a taste.

                  Team SBCR Til Death
Welcome to 2014! 2013 was such a magical year for dane music, that we think 2014 will only be bigger and better. One of the biggest acts of 2013 was The Bloody Beetroots. Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo wowed crowds with The Bloody Beetroots live performances at EDC Las Vegas & HARD Day of the Dead. The album HIDE, was a masterful piece of work that featured the likes of Paul McCartney & Peter Frampton. To welcome in 2014, The Bloody Beetroots are giving away a track for free that is a must have for everyone.
Til Death‘ is the name of the track and features the vocals of Lisa Kekaula. The Bloody Beetroots put in the rolling trap bass line with the continuous upfront snare drum percussion, while also adding some winding synths to the movement making your body sway to the rhythm. The vocals from Lisa add a certain flare to the ongoing momentum of the song that perfectly coincide with each other.
With ‘Til Death‘ being the first original release since HIDE, we cannot wait to see what The Bloody Beetroots have in store for 2014.

On November 14th, Porter Robinson announced his brand new deal with label Astralwerks, in which he will be releasing his brand new LP, expected in early 2014. The North Carolina native has been known primarily as a DJ, rather than as a producer.
Porter Robinson wants that to chance. In a recent interview with Billboard, Porter sat down to talk about his future as a DJ and how he wants to change the perception around him and music. He first opens up by saying that he will be taking a backseat from being just a DJ, and instead focus on a new live show experience.
Obviously I can't continue doing the normal DJ thing, at least as my main thing. That doesn't ever preclude me DJing again. Just knowing myself, I could see myself doing this live show and just being like, 'Man, how fun was it back when I used to like, bang it out or whatever.' It feels weird for me to say that now because I don't feel that at all. I could see myself doing after-parties or maybe a side tour. A lot of bands have their DJ set. That's something that I'm certainly going to be open to.

                  Daft Punk

When you think of 2013 in the dance music scene, you have to think of Daft Punk. The resurgence of their disco french house sound skyrocketed the mainstream and showcased that dance music isn’t about the untz or the drops. It is about the rhythm, the grooves, the melodies. They also helped with the resurgence of Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers. Their album Random Access Memories was one of the biggest albums of 2013. Today, besides gracing the cover of the Wall Street Journal as the winner of their Entertainment Innovator of 2013, Daft Punk has been named by AskMen.com as one of the Top 49 men of 2013. Hitting the #49 spot, Daft Punk are featured on a list that includes Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla), Lebron James, Vladimir Putin and more. This is was AskMen.com had to say about why Daft Punk made the list.

Well now we know that, that is in fact not the case. Pendulum has announced the lineup for their fall 2013 North American Tour. Pendulum will be hitting the road for 7 dates in the US and 1 date in Canada, for a legendary DJ set.
Stops on the tour include Tallahassee, San Francisco, New York and Denver. Pendulum will also be pulling out all the ropes as the group will be stopping at Insomniac Events‘ Escape From Wonderland.
It has been a while since we have heard from Pendulum. Pandemonium is going to take place at all these dates as fans are going to be experiencing something unique and special. Abstract The Ism Bootleg

You might not know the name of Abstract The Ism, but I have been fans of them since they sent me their unreleased album just a few months ago. Made up of the dynamic duo MING and Jumpshot, Abstract The Ism is taking music and bringing it back to the 80s while still giving it a brand new flair. And no, I am not talking about Band of Seagulls 80s, I am talking about classic 80s hip hop.

Today, Shogun and Tania Zygar have released the music video for their track ‘Find Me‘. Released on Armind, it is a great melodic trance track with amazing vocals. Too bad the same can’t be said about the video. Throughout the entire video you are scratching your head asking, “What is going on?” Then you think there is a ghost girl following Shogun, but turns out she is still alive. And the production quality in the video was just not spectacular. Not the strongest effort from Shogun in the video, as the camera was mainly focused on him for most of the time. Tania looks stunning as usual, but the whole time I was just wishing for the video to be over. Buy the track though, ‘Find Me‘ is really good.

This past weekend, the music festival that takes over Miami every year, made its way across the pound and then some all the way to Croatia. Ultra Music Festival Europe debuted in Croatia to a sold out crowd of eager fans from all over. With incredible performances from Armin van Buuren, Krewella, Sander van Doorn, Porter Robinson, Carl Cox, NERVO and many more, it was a weekend full of memories. Check out some of the highlights of Ultra Music Festival Europe in the photo gallery above. Photo credit goes to Rukes. Ultra Music Festival Europe took place in Split, Croatia on Friday and Saturday, and then on the island of Hvar that Sunday.
