Fedde Le Grand is one of the premiere names in the dance music scene. Since his burst onto the scene with the smash single ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit‘, Fedde Le Grand has become a favorite of fans and DJs alike. Now, in 2014, with Ultra Music Festival just around the corner, Fedde shows no signs of slowing down with his newest release ‘Don’t Give Up‘ being released this week on his Flamingo Records. On Friday, March 21st, Fedde Le Grand took the stage to a sold out crowd at Exchange LA in Los Angeles, CA. Before he rocked the house, we sat down with him to get the low down on his set for Ultra, his new artist album, and his brand new single. Get all the details for yourself and get your copy of ‘Dont Give Up‘ today. Q: Take us through 2014 for you so far.I haven't done that much yet outside of studio work. I took January and February off to more or less finish my album. It is almost finished. Should be out at the end of the year. I am kind of tweaking it and working it out right now. I am going to give a small preview of about 6 tracks during Ultra Music Festival. Of course, secretly a few here tonight as well. Q: Wanting to get some details about the album, you say that it is going to be released later this year. What are you going to showcase off with this album?Mainly, I decided to go a little bit more vocal. I think the time is right again. I already did a vocal track in Holland with a rock band, DI-RECT. 'Don't Give Up', my new track, is going to have a vocal version as well that will be on the album. It won't be every track, because I am still a dance artist, but it will be different from what I normally do. To be honest, guys like Avicii and Calvin Harris, they might seem commercial, but they are doing vocal tracks the right way. It still has musical integrity and that is what I like about that. It was an inspiration for me, especially with an album. It works great because people won't judge you if you go outside of your normal comfort zone. Q: Have you decided on a name for the album yet?No, not yet. Same with my last album, I always decide to wait until the last minute. The thing is, you always see in the last minute you make a track and that is the track you are completely happy with. Q: Now lets jump into your new single 'Don't Give Up'. The single is out now off of your Flamingo Records, and boasts a different sound than what people are normally used to with you. Tell us what you were trying to do when you were making the track.I think there are always two sides to music. One is how you start a track. You can make something, and you have a very specific dance floor idea. Sometimes it is more musical idea, where it gets born and you try to translate that into another version. That is what happened with 'Don't Give Up'. I think now, it is time for, and not just me, but there are people trying to push things a bit more different. Over the past year, the music has become a little bit generic. That is good in a sense because they are all great dance floor tunes, so I am doing one or two of those as well, but I am wanting to do something that will get people's attention again, especially right now. Q: From where you began with your sound in the beginning to where you are now, how have you seen your music evolve and change? The thing is, with this album, it is almost full circle. Most people know me for 'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit' or 'Let Me Think About It'. I think the main thing for me is that it has gotten more melodic. My playing improved and my knowledge of music over those years. Some of the tracks on the album are closer to 'Let Me Think About It' vibe, but in a 2014 shell. For me personally, it is almost full circle, but now, I have the idea that I know what I am doing, that I didn't always back then. Q: 'Don't Give Up' was featured in your Sound of Ultra video as well. How did the idea of the video come about? It will be almost one year since this track was accidentally premiered. I am friends with the guy who does the live stream for Ultra Music Festival, and he just happened to stop by my place while I was working on the track. He said, "I love this! I have to have this track!" Back then, I didn't really know what to do with it, so I gave it to him since he is a really good friend. He actually used it during the live stream too. It was funny that, that was the way that it was premiered. Q: Over the past year, you have formed a sort of partnership with Ultra Music Festival. You play all the locations, and last year you also did the Road To Ultra Tour with Sultan + Ned Shepard. How would you say this whole thing came about?I think it is several reasons. I got to know the guys who run Ultra. Most of teh guys just became friends and we just kept in touch. I think the other thing is that as long as I have been playing, I normally could stand alone. I never belonged to a certain group, or posse. I do my thing in my own way, and that is something I think appealed to them. I think for many people that program festivals have someone that can play for a big audience, but can do their own thing. I think Eric Prydz is a great example. He has a very specific sound but still knows how to play the main stage. It is just nice, not that I want to generalize the other guys, but to be completely different from everything else that is going on. Q: That is not a bad slot time to be in either.Well, yes and no. I remember well that, Damian, the guy who does the voice overs for Ultra, was starting to announce, and the crowd was chanting, "Tiesto! Tiesto!". Damian started to announce, "This is the guy that created 'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit'," when the crowd started to scream. Then they went back to, "Tiesto! Tiesto!" It was nerve-racking but it went well in the end. Q: What can fans expect from your set at Ultra this year?Mainly, plenty new music, and some stuff that I want to push. For instance, Jewelz and Scott Sparks. I might even have three tracks in my whole set from them. They make music that in understandable for a big crowd, but they have their own sound and their own twist to it that I really like. A lot of stuff from my own label of course, some tracks from my new album too. I never know what I am exactly going to do, but I know what I want to do with in my mind. Q: What can the public expect from Flamingo Records throughout the year?I think a few guys that the public already knows about including Jewelz and Scott Sparks and Roul and Doors. Another name that I need to mention is dBerrie of course. The thing is, in Holland, there is so much talent. I listen to all the promos that I get, and it equals up to somewhere around 500 to 1000 a week. It is good to do though because that is how you discover the hidden gems that no one has heard yet. I mean, that is how I discovered Deniz Koyu because he sent me a track, and I thought, "This guy must be interesting." We started an email chain and that is how we first started commuting. But I think Jewelz and Scott Sparks will be part of the main thing. dBerrie will be another one. I have really become interested in Marco V too. He changed his sound a lot and I like it. People might not be as receptive because he is a little bit older, but if something is cool, then I don't care if someone 10-years old or 100-years old. Q: Lastly, what do you want to say to your fans?I hope you guys enjoy the music as much as I do. I really hope you guys are enjoy the radio show. Hope you all are enjoying what the label is doing. Send me your tracks if you make music, and I hope to see you somewhere around the world.Photos provided by Exchange LA and WeAreNightOwls.com |
