First Play: Son Lux, Lanterns

For his third album, Lanterns, Denver-born, New York-based, genre-bending producer Son Lux has brought in a slew of collaborators to produce a record that is equal parts Flying Lotus, Ben Frost and Stravinsky. His co-conspirators include Mutemath’s Ben Frost, the Antlers' frontman Peter Silberman and indie rock’s favourite classical music sextet, yMusic (if the name doesn’t ring a bell, you might be familiar with their work with Dirty Projectors and Bon Iver).

The album doesn't come out until Oct. 29 on Joyful Noise, but you can listen to it below in advance.

Lanterns features an almost mind-bending collage of strings, wind instruments and synths, layered over top of insistent electronic beats and paired with haunting vocals. It's a delicate balancing act that would probably implode if left to a less skilled hand.

Son Lux's first two albums received no shortage of accolades. NPR’s Second Stage named him their Great Unknown of the year in 2008, based on the strength of his debut album, At War with Walls. His second album, We Are Rising, received strong reviews from Consequence of Sound, AllMusic and Zen Tapes.

Son Lux has also been heavily involved in the film industry. He composed the score for the forthcoming film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, and contributed heavily to the scores for Looper and Don Jon. He was also one-third of the S/S/S project, along with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti.
