Every month, columnists Lorena Cupcake and Torry Threadcraft compile a playlist of the most noteworthy rap releases for The Rap Round-up. This month, Lil Nas X’s got a new hit in the back.
By the time rappers hit the Freshman Class, they've been doing their homework for years. That's why we spend more time checking for artists still trying to get noticed, like Guapdad 4000, Drayco McCoy or Alabama's NoCap. North Side Chicago's Polo G, a noticeable absence on XXL's list, brought emotion and lyricism to life on his debut album. Jean Deaux represented the West Side with her first LP Empathy, while the South Side's Ajani Jones teased an album — also his first — slated for next month. Lil Nas X upgraded his One Hit Wonder status with a plus-one after 'Panini' proved oddly inescapable this month, critical lambasts of his cowboy-booted strut into brand status no match for the curative powers of a bop. Meanwhile, Migos provided their most enjoyable moments separately this month, as Offset commanded a troupe of dancers on the BET Awards stage and Quavo split a hook with Roddy Richh on E-40's posse cut. The Atlanta group's joyless ode to Atlanta's The Gold Room, 'Stripper Bowl', did not merit inclusion here. Every music writer reaches a point where they run out of metaphors for Future's morbid depression, and that's where the playlist gets weird. Comedian Zack Fox, a legendary guest on the old FACT at BBOX shows, throws out rapid one-liners ("Shout-out mental illness") over Kenny Beats' airy keys; Chief Keef summons uncharacteristic energy with help from Zaytoven; Baton Rouge's Level bandies bald threats over DJ B-Real's beat. Continuing a trend we'll see all summer, producer Tay Keith commanded featured artist credit on Denzel Curry's ZUU, while Atlanta wunderkind Pi'erre Bourne dropped the fourth installment of his solo TLOP series. Yo Pi'erre, you wanna come out here? Listen to June’s picks via Spotify or Apple Music below and subscribe to the playlists to get fresh selections direct, every month. Six million tracks available to stream into your DJ set.
Beatport LINK, the new subscription streaming service aimed at DJs, is now available as a public beta for Mac users of Pioneer DJ's Rekordbox software. The new service was announced in May, and allows DJs to access six million tracks from Beatport’s catalog for $14.99 a month. Beatport also offers two “pro” plans for $39.99 and $59.99 a month that add the option to store 50 and 100 tracks offline.
As well as providing offline storage, Beatport LINK’s pro plans offer significant differences in streaming audio quality. In an interview with CDM back in May, Beatport’s Heiko Hoffmann explained that the basic subscription will offer only 128kbps streaming, with 256kbps AAC quality (equivalent to 320kbps MP3) only available in the pro plans. "We think streaming for professional DJ use should be priced higher," Heiko said when asked about the relatively high price of Beatport LINK’s pro plans. "And we also need to be sure that this is not biting into the indie labels and artists (and therefore also Beatport's own) revenues.” Beatport LINK’s Rekordbox beta is available now, but only to Mac users of the software. The full version is expected to launch this fall. Beatport is also offering a free 30-day trial of the service. Warp’s Mira Calix drops a sunny blend just in time for the European heatwave.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Chantal Passamonte, aka Mira Calix, moved to the UK in the early 1990s, where she worked for 4AD and Warp Records, funneling her creativity into the growing electronic music scene. In 1996, she put out her first 12″ on Warp, the moody Ilanga, following it up with a run of bizarre and brilliant albums and EPs that two decades later still sound unique. Passamonte is also a globally-renowned multi-disciplinary artist. She has had work commissioned by and exhibited in countless cultural institutions including the Barbican, Hayward Gallery, Serpentine, The Royal Shakespeare Company and continues to work on vital art projects across the world. This year, Passamonte returned to Warp to release Utopia, her first release on the label for over a decade. The brittle electronic experimentation that characterized her earlier work is still present, melted into collapsing rhythms and garbled vocal snippets. Mira Calix’s FACT mix is titled “Me Between the Sun” and is her dedication to the summer season. A blend of fresh material from African acts like Uganda’s Mugawasi International Xylophone Group and Nihiloxica, Malian Baba Sisoko and South Africans DJ Maphorisa and Citizen Boy juxtaposed with classics from Roy Ayers, The Beatles and Stevie Wonder, it’s a breezy set of songs that should provide a cool draft as temperatures soar across Europe. Tracklist: Lonnie Holley – ‘Sun & Water’ (feat. Lilian Blades) Mugawasi International Xylophone Group – ‘Sunfall’ Nihiloxica – ‘Kadodi’ Tune-Yards – ‘Sunlight’ Citizen Boy – ‘Indaba Ka Bani Besibesunuza’ The Beatles – ‘I'll Follow the Sun’ DJ Khalab (feat. Leehezla) – ‘Umshove’ (original mix) Nina Simone – ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Fiium Shaarrk – ‘Bogan Sunrise’ Baba Sisoko & DJ Khalab – ‘Kumu’ (Harmonious Thelonious mix) Stevie Wonder – ‘Sunset’ Arthur Baker – ‘On A Mission’ Bill Withers – ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ The Busy Twist – ‘London Luanda pt 1 – Ze Da Lua Ulanga’ Sons of Kemet – ‘My Queen is Anna Julia Cooper’ Kokoko! – ‘Tokoliana’ Roy Ayers – ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’ Read next: LAFAWNDAH finds her language The post FACT mix 715: Mira Calix appeared first on FACT Magazine: Music News, New Music.. |
