In the early 2000's, Los Angeles cultivated an underground hip-hop beat culture, where every budding producer were on the same wavelength, experimenting like mad scientists in laboratories, and producing their next instrumental masterpieces.
A community formed around these artists who crafted a lo-fi, gritty sound that warbled and hissed like worn cassette tapes and vinyl. Glitched effects, samples and loops—driven along by a minimal kick/snare/hat groove—were created and performed on the Roland SP-404 Sampler.
This video shares memories from Dibia$e, Flying Lotus and Ras G but barely scratches the surface of a scene that grew from the roots of Project Blowed, Sketchbook, Boombox and Low End Theory. Now, from dedicated YouTube channels to SP-based Beat Maker showcases to loyal online communities, this underground beat culture from L.A has now found a global home.

From the Forthcoming Album ‘Family Portrait’ by Ross From Friends out July 27th.
"In 1990, when Felix (aka Ross From Friends) was just a twinkle in his father's eye, his dad – having built up a sound-system in the 1980s while playing at various squat parties around London (including the then derelict Roundhouse) – decided that he wanted to get out of the capital and see some of Europe."
He got hold of a bus and started on a trip that would change the course of his life. Not only would he build up a group of likeminded friends and associates, but he caught the attention of Felix's (future) mum. She joined him on his European quest, documenting the journey as they went.
"They travelled through France, Belgium, West and East Germany (though returning through a unified one) and beyond, " the story goes. "Setting up in towns to share their passion for the sounds of hi-NRG dance, Italo disco and proto-Techno through spontaneous parties in whatever venue they could find."
A love story, a journey through rave, a voyage through dancefloors. Also a touching tribute to the figures who imbued Ross with his infatuation for the floor.

Little Snake makes his debut on Brainfeeder with "ENTER" – a collection of 3 tracks inspired by the Gaspar Noé film "Enter The Void". "The EP is a collection of sounds, concepts, feelings, and expressions that were planted in my head many years ago and more recently have grown and come to fruition," he explains.
“This project is the truest form of every last ounce of my soul, created sonically and energetically," says the Western Canadian who has released on Renraku and Saturate, redefining the boundaries of contemporary bass music. Look no further than his headline set at Low End Theory, recent support slots for Flying Lotus and Tsuruda, and support from the likes of Noisia, Amon Tobin, edIT (The Glitch Mob), G Jones, Bleep Bloop and many more if you need any more proof that LittleSnake is going to be an artist to watch in 2018.

'Final Fight' is Thundercat's first original new track since last year's full-length "Drunk" on Brainfeeder, which saw him collaborate with everyone from Kendrick Lamar and Wiz Khalifa to Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins and which earned glowing reviews across the board – including a "Best New Music" piece from Pitchfork. The album was also recently subject to a chopped-not-slopped treatment from OG Ron C and DJ Candlestick of legendary Houston screw outfit The Chopstars. Since its release, Thundercat has toured the world over including prime slots at Coachella and Glastonbury and performed on major late night TV programs The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

British producer Ross From Friends aka Felix Clary Weatherall is the newest signing to Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder family. The 24 year old has a fistful of releases under his belt, the distillation of myriad influences from hip-hop cut 'n' paste culture, 80s Eurobeat, Hi-NRG and Italo into lithe, irresistible, raw dancefloor trax. He made his debut on Breaker Breaker in 2015, followed by outings on Lobster Theremin and sister imprint Distant Hawaii, Lone's Magicwire and recently: Molten Jets.
"It's honestly an absolute rush to sign to Brainfeeder," he explains. "It has always been pushing such a forward thinking sound, one that constantly grabs my attention with every release. I put these 4 tracks together with Brainfeeder in mind; I wanted to explore the music that I've been developing over the past 7 years as Ross From Friends whilst trying to explore the explosive sound that the label is best known for."
Up first, 'John Cage' encapsulates both his desire to experiment but also maintain a sense of fun. "It originally began life as a tune for this goofy hip-hop project that me and my pal Guy from back home always do when he's in London," explains Felix. "I'd be making the beat and he raps. It's always a refreshing approach making tracks in that atmosphere because we're both always on such a spontaneous tip. When I'm making music alone, I'm obsessive and everything takes hours, whereas with Guy, we'd try and get as many tracks finished as possible in like a few hours. That's him freestyling a relaxation tape in the intro."

Brainfeeder presents a special “chopped not slopped" mix of Thundercat's incredible album "Drunk" (2017) by DJ Candlestick and OG Ron C of legendary Houston DJ collective The Chopstars. Slowed down and chopped up, the mix has been fittingly re-titled "Drank". It appeared online last year as an unofficial homage to the virtuoso bassist, songwriter and producer's third and universally acclaimed album and received hearty approval from Thundercat, who proclaimed: "If you got 'Drunk' it's only right that you get 'Drank'. I feel like they go together." – inciting Brainfeeder to make a vinyl format appropriately doused in purple.
Thundercat released "Drunk," his third album, in February 2017 to a rapturous reception. Across its 23 tracks, the Grammy-winning singer/bassist invited his friends Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Wiz Khalifa, Kamasi Washington and Brainfeeder mastermind Flying Lotus to join him on his musical journey. The record was cited in countless "Best of 2017" lists including by Pitchfork, NPR, Rough Trade, Mass Appeal, Complex, NME, Crack Magazine, New York Times, Consequence Of Sound, Noisey, Pigeons & Planes, SPIN, Stereogum, The Guardian, AV Club, Billboard, Complex, Esquire, High Snobiety, LA Weekly, Dummy, The Sunday Times, and it was named the "BBC 6 Music Recommends Album of the Year 2017."
The Chopstars were established by OG Ron C, a veteran of southern rap who co-founded the illustrious Texas-based independent record label Swishahouse Records alongside Michael "5000" Watts in 1997, releasing records by Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Chamillionaire. These albums would often be accompanied by mixes that were slowed down, scratched and juggled by DJs or "chopped and screwed" – a musical style originated and popularised by Houston's DJ Screw (1971-2000). Paying homage to the legacy of DJ Screw, OG Ron C founded The Chopstars, recruited DJs Hollygrove, Slim K, Mike G (Odd Future) and Candlestick, and released remixed versions of hip-hop and R&B records by Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lil' Yachty and 2 Chainz, coining the terms "chopnotslop" and "chopped not slopped" – a reference to other DJs' sloppily executed mixtapes. The collective have also famously chopped up Little Dragon's "Nabuma Rubberband" (2015) and teamed up with Hollywood director Barry Jenkins to release a Chopnotslop version of the film soundtrack "Moonlight".
"I've always been a fan of chopping up creative music," explains DJ Candlestick. "A lot of people don't know we chop up rock and alternative music. We believe in chopping up everything just like DJ Screw's dream – 'chopping up the world.’"
Describing the Chopnotslop version of Thundercat's "Drunk", Candlestick continues: "We are fans of this type of music and especially Thundercat and Flying Lotus. With these type of projects, OG Ron C and myself usually vibe out and do what we do best. ‘Drank' gives you a perfect musical high. It's also a project that all types of people can vibe to – smooth, chill and entertaining."

Brainfeeder releases "Drownscapes" – a new sonic adventure by Locust Toybox – on the eve of Halloween (30th October 2017) as is befitting of such an eerily beautiful and otherworldly ambient excursion.
Locust Toybox is David Firth, a British artist best known for his animated works, in particular Salad Fingers. A good friend of label founder Flying Lotus, he joined the Brainfeeder Films family to share his most recent animated creations: "Cream" and "Umbilical World" and worked with FlyLo on his debut feature film "Kuso". David makes music too, composing the soundtracks for almost all of his work as well as releasing standalone albums when he finds the time.
"I really wanted the misty bleakness of Northern England to come across," he says of his latest album "Drownscapes". "It's an exploration of spacious areas, of descending into comforting madness, of being submerged under miles of water, surprised you are still able to breathe."
"I think almost every track has been used in my cartoons and videos somewhere," he says. "It isn’t a soundtrack album, it’s more of a best of the last 3 years of my atmospheric output.”
"I incorporated a lot of field recordings that I made in my local surroundings," he continues. For example the track 'Pipeo' is based around recordings of a large water pipe that David climbed into with a selection of instruments. This recording technique has its pitfalls though: "I live on quite a noisy street so sometimes I just hang a mic out of the window and record the youths and drug dealers. I sometimes worry they’ll see the mic and think I’m gathering evidence," he laughs.

Following the release of his third album "Ruinism" in June 2017 (accompanied by startling visuals courtesy of Marielle Tepper and Hirad Sab) Lapalux returns with brand new music in the shape of "The End Of Industry" EP on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder imprint.
"The premise of this EP was to make something that resembled the current automated world we're now living in," he explains. "Computerised machines are now taking over a vast majority of industrial tasks and this EP is a window into that transitioning world."
The EP's sonic palette comes from, in part, self-modulating and self-generative modular patches and from played in, recorded motifs and instrumentation as well as heavy editing. "Having this human touch and adding a human aesthetic shows that human interaction is still necessary in the process of creation and manipulation," Lapalux explains. "This EP is my take on the idea of the Human vs the Machine."Leave A Commentposted in Artists by PBDY

In 2017, Iglooghost will release his debut album "Neō Wax Bloom", almost two years to the day since he made his debut as a teenager on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder imprint with the "Chinese Nü Year" EP – four tracks documenting the time-traveling adventures of a gelatinous worm-shaped creature called Xiangjiao. Expanding on this story, "Neō Wax Bloom" follows the events surrounding two giant eyeballs crashing into the mysterious world of Mamu. Across its 11 tracks, Iglooghost builds a typically intense, hysterical, borderline batshit crazy soundtrack, introducing new characters to his fantastical world and inviting back old friends Mr. Yote and Cuushe for the ride.
In the words of Iglooghost:
"When a pair of giant eyeballs crash into the strange, misty world of Mamu, the mysterious forces that govern nature itself are disrupted. A life cycle of transforming creatures is thrown off balance, and the odd looking inhabitants of Mamu are forced to adapt to this calamity. These inhabitants include Yomi – a multicoloured pom-pom monk; Lummo – a wise blind witch training a band of melon coloured babies; and Uso – a sneaky bug thief hidden in a green cloak – as well as many others. As their respective stories begin to interlock, the mysteries surrounding the giant eyeballs are slowly revealed."
Featuring artwork by Iglooghost, the vinyl format includes a large format 12-page Riso printed comic booklet and "Neō Wax Bloom" character sticker sheet.
