The title stands for ‘Caracunde Club Tool’ – a reference to the song by Afro-Peruvian icon Susana Baca.
Philadelphia producers Precolumbian & Estoc have teamed up for CCT, the latest release on Riobamba's label APOCALIPSIS. Blending Afro-Peruvian festejo and landó music, styles that incorporate heavy use of the the cajón percussion instrument (as seen on the EP’s cover art), with hardstyle, the two-track release is the first collaboration from the producers. The release accompanies the launch of Search Engine, a new club night run by Precolumbian and Estoc that according to APOCALIPSIS, “showcases trans women DJs and producers, while creating a safe space to explore nontraditional club music.” CCT arrives this Friday (July 26). A portion of proceeds will go to Philadelphia’s Morris Home, the only drug and alcohol treatment program in the United States exclusively serving trans and gender non-confirming individuals. Posted: 24 Jul 2019 09:00 AM PDT
Against the Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.
This week’s episode features Johanna Knutsson, a Swedish producer, DJ and radio host who runs two vinyl-only record labels: Zodiac 44 and UFO Station Recordings. Knutsson, who’s known for playing high octane techno sets in the club, is very much in ambient mode for her session – watch the results above. Johanna Knutsson’s latest record, Tollarp Transmissions, is out now on Kontra-Musik. Uganda’s Kampire kickstarts the party with this global meltdown of bass-heavy dance pressure.
Kampire Bahana was working for Ugandan festival Nyege Nyege when the organization’s co-founder Derek Debru suggested she should DJ. Bahana was already a regular at Kampala’s parties and was obsessed with the music she was hearing at each event, so it made sense. “I couldn’t mix for shit,” she told DJ Mag last year, “but I put together my tracks and the audience responded so well I’ve been doing it ever since.” Since then, Kampire has gone from strength to strength, performing regularly in Uganda and touring the world. At home, she’s been crucial in mobilizing local women and queer people to establish safer clubbing spaces in a country where that status can be controversial. Bahana has run events with Johannesburg’s legendary Pussy Party, an event specifically geared towards women, and was mentored by Femme Electronic’s DJ Rachael, a pivotal figure in the East African scene. Between them, they’ve helped shift the focus and led a progressive wave in Kampala that’s been crucial for a new, diverse cast of DJs and producers. In the last couple of years, Kampire has achieved no shortage of international acclaim, performing at festivals across the world and touring incessantly, bringing her irresistible mix of underground African club music through Europe, Asia and the USA, picking up gems from the wider global dance continuum on the way. Bahana’s FACT mix is a celebration of all the sounds she’s collected in the last few years, centering itself on East Africa with tracks from Singeli cornerstone Sisso and Hakuna Kulala’s Slikback, dipping into South African gqom and folding in tracks from further outside the base, like a remix from last week’s FACT mix selector, DJ Plead. Anyone interested in hearing the power and optimism coming from Africa right now should look no further. For the second release on the recently launched T4T LUV NRG, co-founder Octo Octa has announced her third album, Resonant Body. Commissioned for this year’s edition of the Manchester International Festival.
Jlin has composed 10 tracks for the soundtrack of a new video game. Songs Of The Lost is “a magic-realist game odyssey through a surreal and absurd digital landscape” and was created by Paloma Dawkins for the 2019 edition of the Manchester International Festival. According to a press release, the game charts a journey to “Apocabliss, the last safe haven” and sees the player traversing borders, roaming hidden highways, exploring secret forests and meeting enigmatic strangers, all to the pulsating sounds of Jlin. Songs Of The Lost, which is free to download now, marks the second time a video game has been commissioned for the MIF. Jlin’s soundtrack follows her score for choreographer Wayne McGregor's Autobiography, which was released last year.
