In terms of genres, Rioux's "Trails" is truly hard to place. Appearing as the first effort in a monthly single series the Brooklyn producer has planned for 2014, the song incorporates threads of robotic pop, miniature house, and smoky jazz into an adventurous electronic form. Rioux's production swiftly glides through a number of musical movements, with the track's light opening skip eventually being consumed by melodic outbursts and flashes of disco guitar riffs, with layers of dusty percussion occasionally joining the mix.

Next week, veteran Detroit house producer and flat out incomparable DJ (not to mention former XLR8R podcast contributor) Terrence Parker will release Life on the Back 9—his first full album under his given name since 1999—via Carl Craig's Planet E label. Applescal's Atomnation label begins its 2014 run with a new EP from Dutchman David Douglas—whose full-bodied, vocal-sprinkled "Higher" serves as the title track for a record which will arrive on January 27 backed by three remixes, including this one from Amsterdam duo Weval. "Higher" moves with a lighter step in Weval's hands, the space between its floating chords acts as an area for airy percussion and the echoes of artificial space to thrive. This is true for the first half at least, as Weval eventually can't resist laying into an almost marching rhythm for his rework's final run, pairing its steady stomp with a lazily brooding bassline. "Higher (Weval Remix)" will appear on the forthcoming Higher EP alongside other versions from Throwing Snow and Matheis, and—of course—Douglas' original version of the tune, which can be streamed in full after the jump.

Sabina Plamenova first released records under the name Subeena—most notably for Planet Mu—before the Berlin-based producer/vocalist shifted into the more experimental Alis project. Lifted from her forthcoming Things Next Door EP for Astro:Dynamics, "Leslape" is a granular and warped tune that recalls a number of Andy Stott's heavily textured soundscapes on Luxury Problems.
