As its title makes clear, The Art of Refixing: The Reprise is a sequel project for San Diego producer AbJo. The Potholes Music affiliate dropped the first installment in his Refixing series just this past July, but he’s already put together enough material for the follow-up. He’s provided his remixes of joints by James Blake, Q-Tip, Sango, and Ta-ku along with Lauryn Hill‘s hook on “If I Ruled The World”. You’ll also hear some original cuts on here, making this the very definition of a must-listen. Oh, and if you are looking for more original AbJo joints, be sure to listen to his Potholes Music EP, The Broken Synth Orchestra.
You can stream and/or cop the project below. Purchase/Download: AbJo - The Art of Refixing: The Reprise [Bandcamp] |

On Nov. 15, Seattle’s The Flavr Blue performed their second show in New York City at Mercury Lounge in the Lower East Side. I sat down with the trio (Lace Cadence, Hollis and Parker) to discuss the origin of the group; the transition in sound from their debut album, Pisces, to their latest EP, Bright Vices; and the exciting nature of performing live in New York City.
This group is getting a lot of traction on the internet these days, not least due to the visibility of Hollis, who’s made numerous appearances on tour with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and contributed vocals to the duo’s latest single, “White Walls”. Watch the interview and learn more about her up-and-coming group. |

Sometimes it takes the right producer to hip you to the work of an MC. At least, that’s often the case for someone like me who prefers listening to instrumentals over vocal tracks as of late. Anyway, when I saw that Minneapolis’ Ackryte had laced this new single from North Carolina rapper Wally Left, I was instantly intrigued.
I was already a fan of Ack’s work, but that project he dropped recently with WriteGroove cemented that feeling. The same goes for “No Tomorrow”, which finds the Minneapolis artist flipping a familiar guitar-and-piano sample that Left uses to talk his shit. And by that, I mean he makes fun of his opponent by comparing his girlfriend’s build to a Gameboy Advance. L to the O to the L. You can hear “No Tomorrow” below. |

Danny Brown was one of the special guests on MTV’s RapFix Live show yesterday. And just as he did on Sway in the Morning this past August, the Detroit rapper sat down with Sway to discuss a bunch of topics related to his career. They talk about when Danny met Eminem in Brussels recently and how they bonded over their shared hometown; what it was like being in that epic Bob Dylan video; getting some perspective after visiting and performing in South Africa; and that whole Pretty Lights fiasco. And during a chat about Danny’s status right now, he mentions that he’s feeling like an underground king at the moment. I concur.
You can watch the two clips below and buy his Old album on Amazon—it’s only $3.99. [via] As a bonus, you can watch Danny perform “Lonely” below. |

It’s escalators galore in the new “Mama, I’m A Man” video from Hot Sugar and three of his favorite rappers. They are Antwon, Lakutis, and Big Baby Gandhi, all of whom spend their time rapping at the camera and surely making folks uncomfortable in malls and subway stations. Hot Sugar shows up for the scenes with fellow New York City dwellers Lakutis and Gandhi, with the latter getting some backup dancer support from the producer. The track stems from his Made Man EP, by the way, so download that if you haven’t yet.

As LuckyMe’s musical Advent Calendar continues on, we’re treated to a brand-new banger from Toronto producer Ango. According to his Twitter, he’s stating loud and clear that “hyphy lives on” thanks in part to his track “Smile XXL”. For me, it’s essentially cutting me off in terms of caffeine, because the snares, airy synthesizers, and absolutely pummeling bass are combining for a shot of espresso straight into my ear. That might sound like it would hurt—and, yeah, it probably would—but it’s pretty goddamned awesome in audio form.

Ta-ku‘s latest drop comes in the form of a mix for the folks at Hypetrak, who previously commissioned the Australian producer to craft the Drive Slow, Homie mix. Now, we’re hearing the sequel, which is brimming with laid-back joints made for cruising the streets at night—hence the title, ha.
It contains recent and/or previously unreleased jams from Dpat, Stwo, Jeftuz, Evil Needle, Mr. Carmack, and Ta-ku himself. Given the mellowed-out vibes permeating through this mix, you probably shouldn’t listen to this if you’re having trouble getting yourself started today. But if you’re all about embracing the chiller side as we get closer to the holidays, have at it. You can stream/download the mix and peep its track list below. Track list:

On My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy‘s “Gorgeous“, Kanye West fired back at South Park for their gay fish/fishsticks send up by rapping that he’d “choke a South Park writer with a fishstick.” Since then, I’ve noticed that the anti-Yeezy folks out there tend to comment on any Kanye-related Facebook posts of ours with “gay fish.”
Well, all of you that feel that way—or simply find the bit to be hilarious—will be pleased to see that the character will return in tonight’s episode that airs at 10 p.m. EST. We’re not seeing a clip from the episode that features Kanye stating that he’s a recovering gay fish as part of a speech about how Kim Kardashian isn’t a hobbit. I can’t. UPDATE: We now have video of every time Kanye showed up on South Park, including a spoof of the “Bound 2″ video, Kanye interrupting Pope Francis’ speech, and a reading of The Hobbit to Wendy, who started the whole “Kim is a hobbit” rumor in the first place. You can see the whole episode below, too, if you want. |

Typically, an artist performs one or two tracks during their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. But seeing how Mac Miller is releasing a concert album, Live From Space, next week, he and his backing band ran through a gang of material in front of the Los Angeles audience. The more turnt-up “Watching Movies”, jazz-leaning “Objects in the Mirror”, a medley of “The Star Room/I Am Who Am (Killin’ Time)“, the Flying Lotus-produced “S.D.S.“, and jammy mixtape cut “The Question” (sans Lil Wayne). After watching these, I can confidently say that I’m excited to listen to Live From Space when it drops Dec. 17.

When she’s not DJing for Kilo Kish, Kitty Cash is apparently getting her curator on. At least, that’s apparent on her newly released Love The Free mixtape, which features a ton of R&B/hip-hop artists we have covered here at Potholes. I’m talking acts like Phony Ppl, Vic Mensa, Jesse Boykins III, Sampha, Michael Uzowuru, Childish Major, Kelela, Sango, Melo-X, and more. And the best part? They have all contributed new material to the project, which plays like, you know, an actual mixtape. Cash decided to have each track move seamlessly into the next as one long mix, leading me to believe that she obviously wants you to digest this all at once. So yeah, do that.
