Every Tuesday, we post our weekly recommendations in house, techno, drum & bass, indie dance, electronica and more. This week’s essential selections include Arca, Clark, eMMplekz, Super Flu and Ed Rush & Nico. Check them out below!
Nick Tsirimokos Editor / Berlin Having produced for the likes of Kanye West, FKA Twigs, Mykki Blanco, and Björk, it’s safe to say Venezuela-born producer Arca's career is taking off. This week, Arca drops his long awaited debut LP Xen, a sonic wall of free-flowing time signatures, reverbs, and runaway synths. The lead-off single “Thievery” sounds like something The Knife might have released if “Silent Shout” came out in 2020. This will be dominating my speakers for weeks to come. Further Listening: Christine Kakaire Editor / Berlin Perfectly timed for Halloween chills, here’s a haunting new track that I haven’t been able to move past this week. I've been a fan of one half of eMMplekz — Ekoplekz — from his first record on Punch Drunk, but generally haven’t warmed to the eMMplekz' distracting stream-of-consciousness geezer vocals. “Re Re” gets the balance right, sounding more like vintage Throbbing Gristle as a result. Further Listening: Matt Ferry Editor / Berlin Rarely has an act, especially a dance act, received an invitation to record with a national symphony orchestra. Super Flu is one of the select few acts that have reached that level. Preparing for their debut performance with the Dortmund Philharmonic on Nov. 17, Feliks & Mathias drop “Volkwein,” another tech houser dressed in true Super Flu fashion, peppered with their signature wonk and wonderfully weird, loose groove. Further Listening: Sean Lewis Editor / L.A. Dropped this Ed Rush & Nico track in strictly for the memories, although by the time I first heard this tune it was already years old. I stumbled across their Techsteppin 12″ single a couple months back and passed on it because of the condition of the jacket, and have been kicking myself ever since. Glad to see this kind of stuff getting remastered, but even more excited to see the No U Turn label coming back to the forefront. Does anyone else feel the drum & bass revitalization going on at the moment? It just seems like the frequency of quality tunes has been increasing by the week. Further Listening: Jason Black Contributing Editor / S.F. Browsing through the store last night, I came across Chris Clark’s seventh album, simply titled Clark. The UK electronic artist, known onstage as Clark, deftly fluctuates between intricate sonic sculptures and driving techno vehicles. “Unfurla” is decorated exquisitely with Detroit-inspired synth flourishes and percussive stabs. For me, this entire album’s worth a listen this week. Gripping. Further Listening: |
Go Back To 2008 With This Classic Deadmau5 Mix

Back in February 2008, the name Deadmau5 was already legendary on the Beatport charts. The producer otherwise known as Joel Zimmerman had just delivered a staggering series of Number Ones, and was deep in a four-year reign as the store’s top-selling performer. It was in those halcyon days that Zimmerman stepped up to record a cover-CD for UK dance monthly Mixmag. Now, as part of their 30th birthday celebrations, Mixmag has immortalized the set on YouTube.
This 70-minute mix finds the ‘mau5 selecting tracks from the likes of Joris Voorn, Glenn Morrison, Peace Division and Eric Prydz in his Pryda guise, transporting us straight back to the sound of 2008. He also showcases a suite of Deadmau5 productions that fans hope to hear in his sets even now: “Faxing Berlin,” “Complications” and “Not Exactly.” As Mixmag writes, “We thought we’d re-up this one to celebrate our 30th as it’s a rare chance to hear Deadmau5 in the mix and may even school a few of the haters that he’s picked up along the way.” You can take a listen below. Meanwhile, back in the present, the double-disc retrospective 5 years of mau5 drops on November 24. While the Dillon Francis update of “Some Chords” has been lighting up festival stages, the collection also includes remixes from Nero, Chuckie, Pig & Dan, Michael Woods and more. |

One of the early pioneers of the hardstyle scene, Zatox, born Gerardo Roschini, has been producing for over a decade, and is finally preparing to release his first artist album. The Q-Dance-signed Italian DJ’s 2CD debut, New World Order, features collaborations with established names like Brennan Heart, Hard Driver, Activator, Tatanka and Mad Dog, and vocals by Max P, Katt Niall and more.
Check out our exclusive premiere of Zatox’s “Faster Than Time,” with vocals by up-and-comer Dave Revan, below.
“Me and Dave [Revan] were both really excited while making this track,” Zatox tells us. “It represents two different sides of our styles; soft melodies and a raw drop, joined in one single track, which resulted in ‘Faster Than Time.’ We really hope you all will enjoy listening to this track as much as we enjoyed making it!”
New World Order is in stores Nov. 14 via Q-Dance.
