Mr. Oizo Will Be Answering Reader Questions for the Next 'Ask the Experts'; Send Him Your Queries Now

When we launched Ask the Experts over the summer, our intuition told us that the XLR8R audience would be excited about it. After all, who wouldn't like the chance to directly ask one of their favorite artists a question or two? However, what's really been surprising is the enthusiasm with which the participating artists have approached the task. Just last week, Vladislav Delay went deep and delivered a very lengthy set of answers tackling a myriad of reader queries. And while we're not expecting every artist to write a novel-length series of responses, we have been pleased that just about everyone we've asked to participate in the monthly series has said quickly "yes." For November, we've enlisted another veteran producer, Mr. Oizo (a.k.a. Quentin Dupieux), to share his knowledge with the XLR8R massive.

Rising UK producer Sui Generis issued his You Got Me EP via the Sounds of Sumo label over the weekend, a six-track effort which included remixes from DJ Q and Majora in its run. Generis' "'90s Girl" production serves as a bonus track to that EP, and like much of You Got Me, the tune finds Generis exploring the darker ends of UK club music. Fueled by a harrowing bassline and built atop a tough shuffle, "'90s Girl" extends beyond the six-minute mark as it burrows beneath industrial textures and layers of brooding strings. Out now, Sui Generis' You Got Me EP can be previewed after the jump. read more |

Last week saw the DFA imprint issue Soft, the debut album from Berlin producer/vocalist Dan Bodan. As a supplement to the release, DFA also teamed up with increasingly visible Vancouver outpost 1080p—who we highlighted during our recent Labels We Love week—to issue a cassette version of the record. Now, in the spirit of further celebrating the labels' partnership, 1080p affiliate MCFERRDOG (a.k.a. Max McFerren) has been enlisted to remix Bodan's "Soft As Rain"; a twisted slice of funk-laced pop in its original form, McFerren reimagines the song as a digital club track, one that stretches its breathy chords and tightly constructed rhythms well past the eight-minute mark. In addition to offering MCFERRDOG's remix for download below, the video for the original "Soft As Rain" can be watched after the jump. read more |

Most musicians mellow with age, but Clockwork (a.k.a. Francesco Leali) seems intent on doing the opposite. Originally coming to prominence with his former DJ partner Federico Maccherone (who Leali now refers to simply as "that other guy"), the project has progressed from sleazy, sunny house for Hot Creations to pummeling DJ sets and 140-bpm collaborations with roommate and childhood friend Avatism (a.k.a. Tomas Feriero). Chatting with Leali, it quickly becomes clear that the Italian producer is someone who's increasingly unwilling to compromise; at the same time, he also speaks with a rare level of candor, casting an unflinching critical eye on his back catalog. read more |

Over the past few years, Arca (a.k.a. Alejandro Ghersi) has quickly become the poster boy for a clued-in generation of internet producers who pay equal regard to DJ Mustard and Daniel Lopatin. Back in 2011, the Venezuelan immigrant's first major effort was a download-only mixtape (consisting entirely of his own material) that came via web 2.0 mouthpiece DIS magazine. His twisted Stretch releases—which did exactly that to hip-hop forms—followed, as did last year's &&&&&, but it all felt a bit slapdash before Ghersi leveled up and started working with Kanye West, FKA Twigs, Kelela, and now, Bjork. Somehow, Arca has ascended from deviantART to working with the defining artists of our time—it's a Horatio Alger tale for the Ableton set. His solo debut, Xen, arrives on Mute, and comes amid a flurry of press in which the young producer has spoken frankly about his sexuality and stated that Xen is a sexless alter-ego that emerges when he's high. Without question, it's an arty concept album from an musician who's crept more than halfway into the mainstream, but it's also Ghersi's most gorgeous, personal work to date.

Now that the calendar has flipped to November, we're assuming that many of our readers (at least the ones in the Northern hemisphere) are unpacking their winter coats and bracing themselves for winter. And while there's little that XLR8R can do to affect the weather and the changing seasons, we can do our best to provide some sunny musical moments, and that's exactly what's been delivered in this week's podcast from Tiger & Woods. Although officially confirmed biographical information about the semi-anonymous duo is in short supply, the Running Back-affiliated pair has nonetheless been responsible for an excellent series of upbeat, edit-centric house and disco releases over the past few years. This week, the two producers will be making a "homecoming" of sorts (at least if the strong hints that Tiger & Woods hail from Italy are to be believed) by performing at the annual Club to Club festival in Turin. Even though the forecast isn't calling for lots of sunshine, it's a safe bet that the pair will warm things up with its set on Saturday night; to commemorate the occasion, Larry Tiger and David Woods have also put together this exclusive mix.

Longstanding Finnish producer Samuli Kemppi has hooked up with Italian label M_REC LTD to issue The Observer Effect LP, a 12-track record that will serve as the first full-length effort from both artist and label. While each of The Observer Effect's productions are said to have resulted from live takes built using only hardware, bonus cut "Oortian Interpretation" feels similarly raw and direct. Extending to six minutes, the track does not see Kemppi rushing, but rather finds the artist sinking into a series of dark and propulsive loops finished with a steel-like edge. Kemppi's forthcoming album will see its official release on November 10; in the meantime, The Observer Effect can be previewed after the jump. read more |
