  3. And Dance Music’s First 2015 Grammy Winner Is…

Perhaps the most surprisingly entertaining moment of tonight’s 2015 Grammys pre-telecast involved Gloria Gaynor and one Richard D. James, otherwise known as Aphex Twin. Tasked with presenting the trophy for ‘Best Dance Album’, Gaynor opened the envelope to find Syro slotted inside. As the orchestra swelled into life, and the presenter looked around expectantly for the winner, it quickly became clear there’d be no triumphant speech from electronic music’s number one oddball. (What we would’ve given to see that, though.)
This year’s ‘Best Dance Album’ nominees found Syro was in unusually diverse company. In addition to Little Dragon’s Nabuma Rubberband and Robyn & Royksopp’s collaborative Do It Againthe nominees included Deadmau5’s double-album While (1<2) and Mat Zo’s Damage Control.
Both producers swiftly took to Twitter after Aphex Twin’s win to congratulate the trailblazer – with Zo even expressing relief his LP didn’t win. He also took the opportunity to shout out Porter Robinson’s ambitious debut album, Worlds, which didn’t make the list of 2015 nominees. Stay tuned for more coverage from the 2015 Grammys.

It’s definitely Monday. There’s so much going on, we’ll help you keep up. Calvin Harris may be heart sick, Skrillex continues to be a rad dude, Laidback Luke has a new video… Check back, we’ve got news.

Skrillex appears on Howard Stern
Skrillex appeared on Howard Stern this morning and discussed a variety of subjects, including his relationship with Ellie Goulding, the Burning Man/Jack U fiasco, button-pushing and much more, without saying too much, as most guests typically do. About Paris Hilton, he said “I don’t think she makes a million dollars a night, I think that’s a rumor.” When asked about deadmau5, Skrillex very diplomatically put it, “He criticizes everybody. He talks shit about everybody.” Check out clips below.

Laidback Luke drops new video
Laidback Luke released an ’80s-inspired video for his new single, “Stepping to the Beat.” Watch it below.

Calvin Harris cancels MTV performance due to heart problems
Calvin Harris was forced to cancel his scheduled performance at the MTV European Music Awards this past weekend, citing “heart problems” in a tweet that no longer appears to exist. Weird. [DancingAstronaut]

Skrillex jokes about DJing with Paris Hilton

Skrillex is one of the nicest dudes, so when TMZ attempted to bait him by asking him how much it would take to DJ with Paris Hilton, he responded “$5 million and give it to all the sick people and starving children around the world.” Never change, bud. [TMZ]

Mark Ronson features DJ Zing, Hudson Mohawke & SMD
Mark Ronson has revealed several of the features on his upcoming album, and they’re surprisingly indie and dancefloor-oriented. The Grammy-winning producer’s fourth album, Uptown Special, which hits shelves in January, will include collaborations with Hudson Mohawe, DJ Zinc and Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford, alongside Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, Bruno Mars and Andrew Wyatt from Miike Snow. Interesting. [NME]

Michael Woods, “Brain Went Ping”
Here’s a new progressive house track by Mau5trap artist Michael Woods, “Brain Went Ping,” who just announced that he is leaving Hakkasan Las Vegas for a residency at LIFE at the new SLS Hotel.

Every Tuesday, we post our weekly recommendations in house, techno, drum & bass, indie dance, electronica and more. This week’s essential selections include Arca, Clark, eMMplekz, Super Flu and Ed Rush & Nico. Check them out below!

Having produced for the likes of Kanye West, FKA Twigs, Mykki Blanco, and Björk, it’s safe to say Venezuela-born producer Arca's career is taking off. This week, Arca drops his long awaited debut LP Xen, a sonic wall of free-flowing time signatures, reverbs, and runaway synths. The lead-off single “Thievery” sounds like something The Knife might have released if “Silent Shout” came out in 2020. This will be dominating my speakers for weeks to come.

Perfectly timed for Halloween chills, here’s a haunting new track that I haven’t been able to move past this week. I've been a fan of one half of eMMplekz — Ekoplekz — from his first record on Punch Drunk, but generally haven’t warmed to the eMMplekz' distracting stream-of-consciousness geezer vocals. “Re Re” gets the balance right, sounding more like vintage Throbbing Gristle as a result.

Rarely has an act, especially a dance act, received an invitation to record with a national symphony orchestra. Super Flu is one of the select few acts that have reached that level. Preparing for their debut performance with the Dortmund Philharmonic on Nov. 17, Feliks & Mathias drop “Volkwein,” another tech houser dressed in true Super Flu fashion, peppered with their signature wonk and wonderfully weird, loose groove.

Dropped this Ed Rush & Nico track in strictly for the memories, although by the time I first heard this tune it was already years old. I stumbled across their Techsteppin 12″ single a couple months back and passed on it because of the condition of the jacket, and have been kicking myself ever since. Glad to see this kind of stuff getting remastered, but even more excited to see the No U Turn label coming back to the forefront. Does anyone else feel the drum & bass revitalization going on at the moment? It just seems like the frequency of quality tunes has been increasing by the week.

Browsing through the store last night, I came across Chris Clark’s seventh album, simply titled Clark. The UK electronic artist, known onstage as Clark, deftly fluctuates between intricate sonic sculptures and driving techno vehicles. “Unfurla” is decorated exquisitely with Detroit-inspired synth flourishes and percussive stabs. For me, this entire album’s worth a listen this week. Gripping.

As you may know, deadmau5 recently bought an expansive 118-acre estate in rural Ontario, Canada. Apparently he’s now taking his departure from “apartment life” in Toronto one step further, and removing himself from the internet altogether – for the time being, at least.

“This is it for a weeeee little while. Bags packed, and headed to LA to take care of some business, and get out to the HARD day of the deadstuffs!,” he writes in a farewell Tumblr post. “After i leave tomorrow, they start boxing up my apartment…. which has served me very well over the years. But it's time to try something a little different, and i think moving out to the middle of nowhere is going to gimme some new perspective and inspiration to get back to work on some more crazy things for 2015.”

The break is likely to be good for the mau5trap boss, as he prepares to release 5 Years of Mau5, a collection of remixes by the likes of Nero, Dillon Francis, Eric Prydz, Madeon, Botnik, Chuckie and others, on Nov. 25.
“With any luck im sure i'll find a little more solitude and peace out there as opposed to being couped up in this apartment life,” he concludes, adding that he’s going to “cool off twitter, leave the paris-ites and everything else alone just for while and screw my head back on so i can get focused on the things to come…. we got some work to do, studios to build, music to get out.”

Sounds nice. Meanwhile, catch deadmau5 at HARD Day of the Dead this weekend, playing a ghastly set with Eric Prydz at their own curated stage.

Todd Terje has already delivered one of the standout LPs of the year with It’s Album Time, and now he’s out to ace the music video game too. The Norwegian producer has teamed up again with director Espen Friberg to make something eye-catching for his disco jam “Delorean Dynamite,” and the result is textbook Terje.

The “Delorean Dynamite” video doubles as a classifieds ad for a guy called Frank in Norway. As it turns out, Frank owns a DeLorean DMC-12, produced in the early 1980s and immortalized as the time machine from Back To The Future. Now the proud owner is looking to sell his iconic vehicle, so you can marvel at it cruising those Norwegian roads with “Delorean Dynamite” as the soundtrack.
Serious prospective buyers can check out the classifieds ad before emailing Frank at delorean_dynamite@hotmail.com. (All this is real, by the way.) Enjoy the unlikely used car advertisement below. We look forward to whatever Todd Terje does next.

This past year, Zedd was the biggest name in dance music. He embarked on his first solo headline tour across the US and Canada, capping off with a sold-out performance at the Shrine Auditorium. Today, Zedd dropped a video featuring footage from himself on the tour, while showcasing video footage to the recording of the acoustic version on ‘Stay The Night‘. We go behind the scenes to life on the bus, life in the green room, and life on stage with Zedd. Some familiar faces are also showcased, such as Dillon Francis, Alvin Risk, Deadmau5 and Zedd.
