Toronto's annual North by Northeast music festival announced its first round of programming today. Among the artists who will be playing the festival are singer-songwriter St. Vincent, Detroit rap oddball Danny Brown and frequently nude "slacker rock" multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco.
Brown is part of NXNE's hip-hop contingent that also includes Three 6 Mafia member Juicy J and Run the Jewels, Killer Mike and El-P's collaborative project. DeMarco heads the Cancon portion of the lineup, which also consists of Montreal-based downtempo electronic act Mas Ysa, genre-bending Torontonian heavy rockers Odonis Odonis and half of alt-R&B duo Rhye. (While Rhye is based in Los Angeles, it consists of one Canadian and one Dane, and will play the fest.)
Rambling, deadpan Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, Massachusetts-based indie rock act Speedy Ortiz and Syrian wedding singer-turned-music press darling Omar Souleyman are all on the early lineup.
The announcement also included a list of industry speakers who will give presentations at the festival's NXNE Interactive conference that takes place at the same time. They included Shady Records' Paul Rosenberg, Pitchfork's Chris Kaskie and OVO Records' Oliver El-Khatib.
North by Northeast will take place from June 13-22 in Toronto. More bands will be announced over the first half of 2014.
