Ahead of the ninth instalment in the annual Worldwide Awards at Koko, we will be shedding light on the artists performing through a series of questions. Next up, Stones Throw’s Jonwayne. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please. Who are you, where are you from etc.? My name is Jonwayne. I’m from La Habra, California. I’m a rapper and producer. I’m signed to Stones Throw Records. How would you describe your music? I try to change the equation whenever things get stale. I guess there’s a consistent theme of minimalism and funk/soul within everything I do, but experimenting is what’s most fun to me so I don’t stay in the same place for too long, sonically. Been making a lot of rap music lately, which has been fun. Been making a lot of rap beats, too. Whom do you count amongst your most significant influences when it comes to production? I really admire the sonic depth and quality of Dr. Dre’s production. Not just the beats but all the way down to the mixing and mastering. No one is better at putting together Hi-fidelity hip hop than he his. Obviously Dilla and Madlib, creatively. DJ Premier. If you could give a musical award of the year, what would it be and for whom? I would give Alchemist the “Still Back in The Game Like Jack Lalanne” award. It’s amazing how far he is into his career and is putting out a body of work within recent years that rivals the discovery era of a lot of musicians. His work ethic is amazing and while maintaining such high quality control is unseen. Do you have a current DJ mix or any tracks that are available for free download right now that we could point folks to?
