Perhaps the most surprisingly entertaining moment of tonight’s 2015 Grammys pre-telecast involved Gloria Gaynor and one Richard D. James, otherwise known as Aphex Twin. Tasked with presenting the trophy for ‘Best Dance Album’, Gaynor opened the envelope to find Syro slotted inside. As the orchestra swelled into life, and the presenter looked around expectantly for the winner, it quickly became clear there’d be no triumphant speech from electronic music’s number one oddball. (What we would’ve given to see that, though.)
This year’s ‘Best Dance Album’ nominees found Syro was in unusually diverse company. In addition to Little Dragon’s Nabuma Rubberband and Robyn & Royksopp’s collaborative Do It Againthe nominees included Deadmau5’s double-album While (1<2) and Mat Zo’s Damage Control.
Both producers swiftly took to Twitter after Aphex Twin’s win to congratulate the trailblazer – with Zo even expressing relief his LP didn’t win. He also took the opportunity to shout out Porter Robinson’s ambitious debut album, Worlds, which didn’t make the list of 2015 nominees. Stay tuned for more coverage from the 2015 Grammys.

The Grammys Reveal 2015 Best Dance Album and Dance Track Winners

Following Tiësto’s win in the ‘Best Remixed Recording’ category, the 2015 Grammy Awards pre-telecast just revealed the winners in the 'Best Dance/Electronic Album' and 'Best Dance Recording' categories. Both categories had several strong contenders this year, with perhaps the most diverse list of nominees we’ve seen to date from a Grammys panel.
The 'Best Dance/Electronic Album' trophy was claimed by electronic trailblazer Aphex Twin, in a category that also included standout LPs from Deadmau5, Royksopp & Robyn, Little Dragon and Mat Zo. So, was Richard D. James there to collect the award for Syro? As much as we would’ve relished seeing his acceptance speech, the reclusive producer was a no-show at the ceremony.
‘Best Dance Recording’ – perhaps the most closely-watched electronic category – went to UK electronic group Clean Bandit and their Jess Glynne-featuring “Rather Be.” The nominees list for 'Best Dance Recording' had a distinctly UK flavor, thanks to Disclosure, Basement Jaxx and Duke Dumont, with the outlier of LA-based enigma ZHU. Take a listen to all the nominees below.

The first Dance/Electronic winner in the 57th Grammy Awards has just been announced during the pre-telecast awards ceremony at LA’s Nokia Theater. That winner is none other than Dutch don Tiësto, who has scored his first-ever Grammy in the ‘Best Remixed Recording’ category. Tiësto’s ‘Birthday Treatment’ remix of John Legend’s “All Of Me” was the winner in a field that also included MING, Audien, Kaskade, Eddie Amador and Robin Schulz.
Despite the overwhelming success of dance music in North America, it’s yet to be inducted into the main ceremony. “We’re selling more tickets than any other artists out there,” Kaskade quipped in 2013, adding that dance music is ready for “the big room.”
In 2014, the breakout star of the electronic categories was undoubtedly Zedd, who won ‘Best Dance Recording’ with “Clarity.” However, it was French iconoclasts Daft Punk who ruled the ceremony overall, taking Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and more. They also lit up the stage at Staples Center with a comeback performance featuring Pharrell Williams, Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Stevie Wonder.
After the high of Daft Punk, the Grammys’ 2015 performers list is unlikely to stir up as much excitement for dance fans. With pop stars like Ariana Grande, Madonna, Katy Perry and Beyonce all locked in, there’s also a few special on-stage team-ups, including Mary J. Blige and Sam Smith and the much-hyped Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney performance. Stay tuned for more updates from the show – we’ll let you know if there are any Daft Punk-sized developments.
