Todd Terje has already delivered one of the standout LPs of the year with It’s Album Time, and now he’s out to ace the music video game too. The Norwegian producer has teamed up again with director Espen Friberg to make something eye-catching for his disco jam “Delorean Dynamite,” and the result is textbook Terje.
The “Delorean Dynamite” video doubles as a classifieds ad for a guy called Frank in Norway. As it turns out, Frank owns a DeLorean DMC-12, produced in the early 1980s and immortalized as the time machine from Back To The Future. Now the proud owner is looking to sell his iconic vehicle, so you can marvel at it cruising those Norwegian roads with “Delorean Dynamite” as the soundtrack. Serious prospective buyers can check out the classifieds ad before emailing Frank at delorean_dynamite@hotmail.com. (All this is real, by the way.) Enjoy the unlikely used car advertisement below. We look forward to whatever Todd Terje does next. |
Orbital Break Up After 25 Years
Posted: 21 Oct 2014 12:45 PM PDT
After 25 years, British duo Orbital have officially called it quits.
"We've had our ups and downs, and it's not always been easy, but I've loved my time with Orbital," begins founding member Paul Hartnoll’s statement on the group’s website. "But nothing lasts forever and it's time to stop.” After fondly recalling the “fantastic” time they’ve had and the “amazing” audiences they’ve played to, Paul goes on to reveal that he has a new solo project called 8:58, his first without his brother, and former partner in Orbital, Phil. “It’s a continuation of my work from the past 25 years but with a new vitality taking me on to something fresh, mixed with the best of what I’ve put into Orbital,” Paul explains. “Expect some live shows soon where I will be playing a mixture of my new music alongside my Orbital favorites.” Paul’s 8:58 project already has a single, aptly titled “8:58,” which you can check out below, and a release date (Feb. 16) for a debut LP of the same name. Paul and his brother Phil Hartnoll famously recorded the first Orbital single “Chime” under the stairs at their parents’ house, on their father’s cassette deck, in 1989. The song went on to become a rave anthem, emblematic of the emergent underground movement as it distanced itself from acid house’s dark warehouses for rave’s wide-open fields. “Chime” cost nothing to make, shot to #17 on the UK charts, earned the duo an appearance on Top of the Pops, which they refused to mime, confirming “button-pusher” critiques, but also paving the way for a legion of stadium dance careers, from Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers to the current crop of EDM stars. Orbital donned flashlight glasses, initially for functional purposes while playing in the dark, and eventually as a sort of trademark. In 1994 they headlined Glastonbury, and closed with a spine-tingling version of their first single, “Chime.” Though English Parliament passed the Criminal Justice Bill to legislate raves shortly thereafter, it was too late, the feeling had taken hold, and lives on still, 20 years later. Orbital went on to play Glastonbury four more times. Though they broke up first in 2004, the Hartnolls reunited to celebrate 20 years of their rave classic “Chime,” headlining The Big Chill Music Festival in 2009. They went on to take the show stateside for Coachella 2010, extending their tour through 2012, when they played the surreal 2012 London Paralympics Opening Ceremony with vocals by Stephen Hawking. It’s impossible to imagine this music without Orbital’s contributions, we look forward to hearing what Paul and Phil Hartnoll do next, together or otherwise. |

Techno diehards in New York City (and beyond) were delivered some troubling news last week, when Thanksgiving weekender Time Warp USA lost its venue. Despite the murmurs from some corners, though, the event is still “100% taking place” on Nov. 28-29, according to organizers. In a statement today via Facebook, Time Warp put the rumors to rest.
“On Friday we released a statement regarding our location change and we would like to re-confirm our event is still 100% taking place,” the statement begins. “We can reassure you that we already had a back-up location selected, as such things can happen with festivals. The new location is similar in character and spirit to the Armory.” The new, as-yet-unnamed location is said to be 15 minutes from Manhattan, so anyone who has already booked accommodation shouldn’t be too inconvenienced. “This venue allows us enough flexibility to bring a proper Time Warp production to the US,” organizers assured. “Our two heads of production arrived yesterday at the venue to finalize everything. They plan to deliver the best possible Time Warp experience.” To ensure the “best possible Time Warp experience,” the team has already secured Richie Hawtin, Sven Väth, Dubfire, Dixon and several more leading names from the house and techno ranks. Additional acts will be revealed when the new location is announced, so stay tuned. To get hyped, check out the after-movie below from the flagship Time Warp in Mannheim, Germany. |

Over the past two decades, Basement Jaxx have turned out classic-after-classic, from the sumptuous "Be Free" and "Samba Magic” to hits like "Fly Life," "Red Alert" and "Where's Your Head At," forever securing their place in the annals of dance. Now, after a rejuvenating five-year break, the Jaxx are back. The UK-based house duo, Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton, turned heads again this summer when they delivered their seventh album Junto. The 13-track LP, named for the Spanish word for "together," features standouts like "Mermaid of Salinas" and the global dancefloor smash "Never Say Never."

We wanted to interpret ‘Emperor’ with a stronger and grooving bassline and a more club-fitting sound, in addition to the spacey tribal atmosphere and hypnotizing acapella. It’s also notable that in the break we used our own live recording from the Chitwan National Park in Nepal to add the jungle ambiance that fits the whole atmosphere of the remix.” |

It’s been a long time coming, but now’s your chance to get acquainted with the new album from Dillon Francis, Money Sucks, Friends Rule. The producer’s debut full-length is set to drop on October 27 via Mad Decent/Columbia, two weeks before his ‘Friends Rule’ tour heads out across America. For everyone who can’t hold out any longer, you can hear the whole thing right now via MTV’s album stream below.
As fans already know, the Money Sucks, Friends Rule tracklist is stacked with collaborations, from Dillon’s producer peers like Martin Garrix, DJ Snake, TJR and Sultan & Ned Shepard through to the wildcard contingent of Twista and Panic! At The Disco frontman Brendon Urie. There’s also guest spots for Diplo’s party-starting crew Major Lazer and Australian electro outfit The Presets. As Dillon himself has repeatedly reminded us, you should expect a “diverse” debut that covers pop anthems to moombahton to festival-geared electro-house. You can expect to hear most of Money Sucks, Friends Rule played loud during Dillon’s upcoming North American tour, which kicks off in Nashville on November 17. From there, the roadshow stretches through Philadelphia, Montreal, Chicago, Boston and many more stops in-between, before the grand finale at New York’s Barclays Center on January 16, 2015. The support cast of ‘friends’ along the way switches between TJR, Hoodboi and Trippy Turtle. You can get into that long-overdue album below, via MTV. |

Back in 2007, Canadian collaborators Deadmau5 and Jelo delivered “The Reward Is Cheese,” an electro-house anthem that still lights up club dancefloors today. Now the track has been given a new lease on life with a special remix EP, featuring 2014 makeovers from Norwegian gun Fehrplay, self-described purveyor of “dance-y, noisy stuff” Nom De Strip and Germany’s Tujamo. The collection has now landed on iTunes via Chris Lake’s Rising Music label, and you can listen to the three new versions of “The Reward Is Cheese” below. Which one’s your pick?
This EP is a separate project from Deadmau5’s upcoming retrospective double-album, 5 Years of mau5. Set for a November 25 release, the compilation pulls together "highlights from Deadmau5's most beloved back catalog alongside exclusive and new remixes from friends of mau5trap." Those "friends" on the remix roll-call include Nero, Chuckie, Eric Prydz, Madeon and Pig & Dan. Meanwhile, the ‘mau5 himself is keeping pretty quiet on the touring front, as he develops his ambitious new live set-up for a prospective 2015 arena tour. You can be sure he’s thinking big for the ‘360-degree’ show. “I don't think it'll work anywhere but stadiums,” he mused to Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 back in June. “It's 16 trucks [of production]. I'm going all chips in, doing it like it's my last tour. Even though it's probably not. This is a five, six year plan.” |
