The wait is over.
Brookyln’s Via App, aka Dylan Scheer, has been on our radar since she was rocking basement parties in Boston. The producer has shot to notoriety in recent years thanks to a couple of essential releases – 2014’s Dangerous Game, which was released on Vancouver’s 1080p label and its follow-up 12″, 7 Headed. Since then, Scheer has been tirelessly touring and recording. She thew together an incredible FACT Mix for us back in March and has been busy on the festival circuit since. Thankfully she’s managed to find the time to work on her eagerly-awaited debut album proper, and today she revealed on Facebook that it’s set to drop on Break World Records – the imprint responsible for releasing Elysia Crampton’s stunning Demon City. The release date isn’t clear yet, but Scheer shared Ben Mendelewicz’s ace fantasy artwork (is it our imagination or does it look a little like Dark Souls?) and you can check it out below. Just in time for autumn.
Nine Inch Nails promised new music in 2016 and may be releasing the first single from their follow-up to 2013’s Hesitation Marks next month. According to reddit user H-orce, who “[works] in the music industry”, the band has a track called ‘Dive and Slam’ in the Kobalt Music Group database. Consequence of Sound reports |
Last month, we reported that the very first Minimoog Model D is in Reznor’s personal studio, so perhaps this could give us a hint of what to expect from new tunes.
Revisit Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Copy of A’ below.
Update: Sorry Nine Inch Nails fans.
Not true.— Trent Reznor (@trent_reznor) August 3, 2016

Britney’s back.
Back in June, Britney Spears dropped ‘Make Me…’, a brand new slice of pristine pop featuring G-Eazy. Now she’s announced her upcoming full-length Glory, and it’s set to drop almost immediately.
The album, Spears’ ninth following 2013’s uneven Britney Jean, will be made available on August 26 exclusively (for now) on Apple Music. We don’t have a tracklist yet, but you can check out the cover below.
‘Make Me…’ was featured in FACT Singles Club and didn’t exactly go down with our panel of commentators. Let’s hope the album is more Blackout than Circus.

Earlier this year, FACT’s John Twells and Bryan McKay headed to Montreal with local FACT contributor Son Raw for MUTEK, and talked to a handful of artists about the nature of live performance.
Dublin-based duo Lakker are a rarity. They combine head-pummeling techno with the frazzled indulgence of IDM without losing momentum and expanded their sound into glorious widescreen on this year’s epic Struggle & Emerge full-length.
When they perform live, some of that album’s dense soundscapes are stripped back to reveal punishing rhythmic tracks, and the propulsive bass and tweaked, complex rhythms are pushed right to the front.
The duo describes the process of translating their glacial studio productions into a live experience as a “weird, contrived process”, but they’ve managed to integrate their Ableton Live set with vocal clips, samples and devastating visuals. The result is crushing.
Struggle & Emerge is out on R & S Records now.
Directed by Bryan McKay. Interview by Son Raw. Shot by Bryan McKay and John Twells. Produced by John Twells.

Spain’s DJ Clara! mixes Reggaetoneras 2.
Low Jack’s Editions Gravats label has released a cassette of female MC-fronted reggaeton featuring tracks from the '90s to present day.
Reggaetoneras 2 is mixed by Spanish DJ Clara!, who is a member of Belgium’s PRR! PRR! collective. According to the label, the Puerto Rican genre was popular in the town of Galicia where she grew up. The mixtape is influenced by French hip-hop DJs including Cut Killer and DJ Poska. PRR! PRR! member David Coquelin also had a hand in putting together the tape’s collages, scratches and skits.
It’s the latest in a series of mixtapes from Editions Gravats, which has also released tapes from Coquelin and Antinote’s Zaltan. There are no clips of the tape, but her original Reggaetoneras mixtape is streaming on SoundCloud. Grab the tape from Boomkat.
Earlier this year label founder Low Jack released the footwork-inspired Lighthouse Stories album on Modern Love – listen to his FACT mix.

Another release from the summer blockbuster soundtrack.
Grimes joins Skrillex and Rick Ross, Ty Dolla $ign and Lil Wayne and more with her latest, ‘Medieval Warfare’ from the Suicide Squad soundtrack. Despite the overwhelmingly negative critical reception of the movie, Grimes said, speaking to Zane Lowe on Beats 1 where the song premiered, that she’s “really, really looking forward to it.”
She’s so enthused that she said she was “openly weeping” after she got the call to make the track, as well as during the entire process of recording it. However, she probably won’t take on a full film score or soundtrack any time soon: “Everyone I know who’s ever done it brutally hated it,” she says. “I feel about more fearful about it now. Everyone I know who’s done it [speaks about it with] extreme vitriol and says [things like] ‘I wasted three years of my life’…”
Check out the track and listen to the full interview below. Suicide Squad and its soundtrack are out this Friday, August 5.

The title track from Jessy Lanza’s latest shines
.
Jessy Lanza goes for a psychedelic bike ride in the video for the title track from her latest album Oh No. Directed by Winston H. Case (who’s previously worked with Perfume Genius and Paramore), the clip follows Lanza’s Christmas-lit bicycle to a solo dance party in the desert. It’s a perfect illustration of why her dreamy club fantasia is one of our favorite albums of the year so far.

The south London artist melds UK rap, grime and Caribbean dance.
Brixton producer Gaika has signed to Warp.
Gaika’s debut single for the label, ‘3D’ – a song Warp describes as an “affront to the oppressive forces at work in the world” – is out today. Hear it below.
The single follows Gaika’s Security mixtape, which was released in April this year via Mixpak and which we featured in our rap round-up that month.
Gaika plays an immersive show at Camden’s Roundhouse on August 11 that is being billed as an “imaginary club experience.” CLUB 88 is inspired by Akira, Brixton and Gaika’s Security mixtape and is part of Ron Arad's 360° installation, Curtain Call. Visit the Roundhouse site for tickets and more information.

The LA artist’s first full-length is released in October.
LA-based musician Katie Gately has signed to Tri Angle for the release of her debut album, Color.
Emerging in 2013 with well-received releases for Blue Tapes and Public Information, Gately won fans with a unique style that came from a combination of found sounds and manipulations of her own voice.
According to Tri Angle, Color continues this approach with “seven maximalist electronic compositions based on the idea that more is more.”
Speaking of her approach in a press release, Gately says: “It's always about how much can I add before it just sounds too crazy. What's the most obnoxious thing I can make the song do? How can I have it be just forty-nine percent obnoxious and fifty-one percent fun?
“I think there is a pretty consistent thread of wanting to honor both things–wanting to honor the aggressive, not pretty sounds, but then also singing and always including a melody to balance that.”
Color is released on October 14. In the meantime you can revisit FACT’s interview with Gately from 2013.
Tracklist:
01. Lift
02. Tuck
03. Sift
04. Rive
05. Frisk
06. Sire
07. Color
