There may be no release date for Frank Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry, but the 2016 crop of R&B has been far from barren.
If anything, the long and winding road to Ocean’s sophomore full-length may be distracting people from what else has been going on in the genre. Not to worry – we’ve collected a slew of tracks that survey the year so far, from the brilliant comebacks (Tweet, Maxwell) to the boundary-pushing up-and-comers (Anderson .Paak, Chloe x Halle, KING) to the biggest pop crossovers (Drake, Rihanna) and more. We can’t tell you right now when the album will be released – although, you can sign up for this text service that will hit you the second the album drops – but we’ve spent most of the year celebrating the best of the rest of the genre and the artists who are inspired by it. Whether it was spending time with Awful Records’ Abra and Alexandria or showing you how D∆WN gets it done in her live show – and every month with Southern Hospitality’s best-of round-ups – we’ve kept our eyes on how the genre continues to evolve and surprise, even when one of its most celebrated experimental artists is staying silent. We’ve put together an Apple Music playlist to help get you through the days (months? Years?) before Boys Don’t Cry, introduce you to things you may have missed or just to continue to remind you that R&B is still as varied and vibrant as ever. Whether it’s classic soul with forward-thinking production or future-R&B completely stripped of club influence, loves songs or songs about the absence of love, the best of the year so far is here. Check it out over at Apple Music or stream it below. Read next: R&B time-traveller NAO draws from the past but lives in the future The post No Frank Ocean album? Grimes, Noah “40” Shebib curate soundtrack for NBA 2K17

A sprawling soundtrack for the class game.
Grimes, OVO production luminary Noah “40” Shebib and ‘Radioactive’ band Imagine Dragons have collectively curated the soundtrack for 2K’s upcoming NBA 2K17. (DJ Khaled and DJ Premier tag-teamed those duties last year.) The soundtrack features a slew of music from Drake and the rest of his and 40’s roster, as well as Grimes’ ‘Kill v. Maim’ and tracks from Chairlift, SBTRKT, Future, Skepta and more. You can stream it below via Spotify. Earlier today, the streaming platform unveiled plans for an entire channel dedicated to the music of video games while Florence + The Machine released an EP of tunes from Final Fantasy XV. NBA 2K17 still has the same team-building and trading functionalities as the previous two iterations of the game, but now includes “guest teams” like the Dream Team, the USA men’s basketball squad who dominated the Barcelona summer Olympics in 1992. Sadly, it does not feature a guest appearance from The Rock.
The road to Tinashe’s sophomore full-length Joyride has been littered with false starts – a first single featuring Young Thug was replaced by one featuring Chris Brown; darker collaborations with Juicy J and Metro Boomin, respectively, have been scrapped all together; her spring shows were canceled mid-tour due to exhaustion. But it seems ‘Superlove’, written and produced by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, is the rollout kick-off the LA singer has been waiting for. The track takes inspiration from Ghost Town DJs’ ‘My Boo’, a '90s megahit which gained new life this year when the song went viral on Vine. Another crucial bit of '90s ephemera that was reinvigorated this year was the cheesy David Hasselhoff-led lifeguard drama Baywatch, as a film version of the show starring The Rock and Zac Efron went into production this spring. Here, Tinashe uses the series as the them of the video making the whole thing both a nod to decades past and a celebration of summer’s final days. Joyride is slated for release this fall. The owls are not always what they seem and neither is the Twin Peaks release.
According to The Hollywood Reporter |
This was probably the least ambiguous tidbit Nevins offered. The network currently does not know how many episodes there will be. FACT previously reported that it could potentially run for two seasons, but as it was originally intended as a second film in the franchise, there are a lot of decisions for David Lynch and Mark Frost to make in the editing room.
Executives at the network have only seen footage, not completed work and have noted that the release will be “unconventional in the handling of it and how we put it out in the world.” That said, they confirmed the episodes will not arrive all at once.
“I want to embrace the unexpectedness of it, so I could definitely see longer episodes or in terms of this question of how do we release it linearly and how do we release it for people who want to stream it — maybe there’s something different between the two,” Nevins said at the event where a behind-the-scenes reel with interviews with members of the 217-person cast was screened. Sadly, this will not be put online.
Earlier this week, the long-awaited vinyl reissue of Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks OST was released via Death Waltz Records. It’s available via Mondo now and in stores on September 9. Coffee and Pie events will be held around the US at participating record stores on September 6.

Well, it was only a matter of time.
Spotify has launched a music channel dedicated to gaming.
Announcing the news via its blog today (August 12), the streaming giant says Spotify Gaming will bring together “video game music of all kinds.” It will feature original soundtracks, like Final Fantasy before it was desecrated by Florence + the Machine, and No Man’s Sky, as well as curated playlists from Spotify and those created by members of the Spotify community.
Current playlists include the rap-led ‘Power Gaming’, featuring tracks from Dr. Dre, Desiigner, and Eminem, and a ‘RetroWave’ playlist, which takes its inspiration from synth-laden '80s games and movies. Listen to that one below.
Spotify’s new Gaming category will be available in ‘Browse’ across all platforms, including iOS, Android, desktop and PlayStation, starting today.
Of course, if you love video game soundtracks that much you should start with our Top 100.

No musical knowledge required.
Novation has updated its popular Launchpad Pro controller with feature much requested by its user base: a scale mode.
The new mode means that anyone using the controller can play basslines, melodies, chords and leads in key without the need for any knowledge of musical theory. It was conspicuously absent from the controller when it launched last year, despite Ableton’s Push controller having a similar feature for several years.
It works in a similar way to Ableton’s scale mode, applying the controller’s pads only to the notes in a chosen scale. Novation’s update offers 32 keys and modes, including major, minor, phrygian and the Japanese iwato scale.
The new feature will function with Ableton Live and any other workstation, but also works with hardware synths and other external gear via the Launchpad Pro’s built-in MIDI connection – something you can’t do with Ableton’s Push.
Novation has also produced a video explaining the functionality of the firmware update, which can be downloaded here.
Novation recently updated its Circuit hardware as well, adding extra sample power to the all-in-one groovebox. According to Novation, the scale mode is inspired by the layout of Circuit.

Each week, FACT trawls through the untamed world of free mixes, radio specials and live blends so you don't have to.
This week’s selections range from Jamican dancehall to Soviet disco, taking in library music and dark techno selections from Poland on the way. There’s also a killer set from house great Roger Sanchez recorded at the Glastonbury’s NYC Downlow to get stuck into.
Roger Sanchez
NYC Downlow 2016
For the lucky few who squeezed themselves into NYC Downlow, Glastonbury's dedicated drag dive modelled on the gay clubs of '80s New York, a big highlight of this year's line-up was Roger Sanchez's two-hour session of floorboard-creaking, bicep-flexing, moustache-twirling house. A gift from one of NYC’s greats, the classics-heavy sesh arrived on NYC Downlow's freshly launched website this week – we're gonna be keeping an eye on this one. Listen here
Olivia
RBMA Choice Mix
Polish selector Olivia steps up to the RBMA Choice Mix with a taut mix of razor-sharp Dutch electro, dank techno and Italo-tinged sounds. Folding minimal wave from Das Ding and classic R&S into tracks from I-F, Florian Kupfer, L.I.E.S. artist NGLY and DJ Overdose, it’s proof you should make the effort to check her out at this year’s Unsound festival in Krakow.
Equiknoxx Music
Hodge on Rinse FM, August 9
Following the release of their killer Bird Sound Power album for Demdike Stare’s label, Jamaican dancehall production duo Equiknoxx Music are getting the recognition they deserve. This week they joined Hodge’s Rinse FM show for a guest mix and played a batch of their own instrumentals along with what we can only assume are rare-as-hen’s-teeth dubs from the '70s and '80s. Essential listening.
Al English
Electronic Beats podcast
Mute Records mainstay and celebrity cat owner Al English has put together a 30-minute mix of electronic library music for EB ahead of his set at Berlin’s Pop-Kultur festival this month. From TV theme composer Alan Hawkshaw to French hero Rene Roussel, who appears on the first Cosmic Machine compilation, these selections cover the eerie, quasi-devotional and cat-friendly end of the ambient spectrum over a 15-year period when the synth was king. We’re sure Bam would approve.
DJ Scientist
VF Mix 59: Soviet Disco
If, like us, you’re completely ignorant of the disco made behind the Iron Curtain, this mix will be an education. As Berlin’s DJ Scientist explains, unlike some banned western genres like jazz and rock, disco was able to fly under the radar of state officials who just saw it as music for dancing. In this mix, DJ Scientist selects some of the best disco to come out of Russia, Ukraine, Lativia, Belarus and Estonia in the '70s and '80s.

2016 strikes again.
Florence + the Machine has shared a trio of songs recorded for Final Fantasy XV.
The three cinematic-sounding tracks, ‘Too Much Is Never Enough’, ‘I Will Be’ and ‘Stand By Me’, were recorded with producer and composer Emile Haynie (Kanye West, Lana Del Rey) and inspired by the world and story of the upcoming latest instalment in the long-running fantasy video game series.
Florence says she also took inspiration for the songs from Classic FM, specifically after hearing a program about the use of classical music in video games. “It was really fascinating, the music was incredibly beautiful and emotional and I took it as a sort of sign, to see what I can do in this medium.”
Speaking about her collaboration with the Final Fantasy franchise, she says it wouldn’t have made sense to work with another video game. “In some ways the landscape of Final Fantasy and my own internal landscape seemed to fit quite well, it's mythical and beautiful and epic.”
The game is set for a September 30 release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Watch the trailer below.
Aside from being a classic of the genre, Final Fantasy VI and VII were both ranked very high in our list of the 100 greatest video game soundtracks of all time.

NOTU_URONLINEU was recorded entirely in the dark.
Hyperdub has announced the next album from DVA, which will be released in October under the [Hi:Emotions] alias.
As well as featuring a darker, looser feel than his previous productions, the label says NOTU_URONLINEU is a dystopian concept album with hints of “faux-therapeutic advertising and psychotic jingles” that reflect the stress of life online.
“The album project comes from a short visual story set in a time where a mega corporation H:E / Hi:Emotions is slowly taking control of everything, and plan to eventually make all people live life under one brand in virtual reality,” the producer says in a press release.
As the Hyperdub regular explains, the album was made under several self-imposed conditions, including recording the whole thing in the dark. “I realised before making this album I was most happiest when listening to music in the dark like I did when I was at school,” he says.
NOTU_URONLINEU is released on October 7. Check the artwork and tracklist below.
Tracklist:
01. ‘SHUTDOWNCENTRAL’
02. ‘SUZHOU’
03. ‘MEMORIESOFOFFLINEACTIVITY’

“our understanding of self has in a way deeply and radically changed.” Legendary German director Werner Herzog has offered an analysis of Kanye West’s ‘Famous’ video.
Speaking to The Daily Beast today (August 12), Herzog comments on the authenticity of the doppelgängers featured in the video and how
The director also tries to name all the celebrity waxworks featured in the video, which he calls “deceivingly well cast.” “The fact that there’s just breathing and imagining is wonderful about it. This is very good stuff,” he says.
The best bit is when Herzog mistakenly refers to Kanye as “Kane”, extending an invitation for “Kane West” to apply to his film school, because he’s “never seen anything like this.” Watch it below and check out West’s original work of art on YouTube.
