Scary monsters and nice sprites.
DubWars arrived on Steam earlier this summer, and Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade have now uploaded a gameplay video that shines a light on the game’s innovative blend of electronic music and old-school action. The premise is pretty interesting to begin with. Different from traditional rhythm games like Guitar Hero or, more fittingly, last year’s addictive Crypt of the NecroDancer, you don’t actually have to push the buttons in time with the rhythm, the rhythm actually dictates your weaponry. You control a small spaceship and (as usual) have to blast your way through a sequence of stages, but this time the game’s barrage of bass, beats and wubs actually informs the way you can take out the alien threat. You can watch Krahulik and Holkins wrestle with the game’s idiosyncrasies below, and grab the game from Steam. Regardless of whether this is technically “bro step” or not, we wanna play. More information on the London rapper’s supposed final album.
Zayn Malik has joined the list of heavy-hitters appearing on M.I.A.’s upcoming album AIM. The two have teamed up for the track ‘Freedun’, which M.I.A. told Entertainment Weekly was written via text: “We just basically did it while I was here, because I've been here for a week-and-a-half. We've just been going back and forth on, you know, WhatsApp.” M.I.A. was originally asked to contribute to his solo effort Mind of Mine because they have the same publisher. “Before I started writing properly my own stuff, I was thinking maybe I'll write for other people instead. I really wanted to write a song for Zayn,” she told EW. “We had a couple people in common. And that's how it came about. I didn't really approach him for my own record until later on. First, I thought I wanted to try writing a song for him.” ‘Bird Song’, a collaboration with Diplo and the next single from AIM, is slated for release this Friday, August 12. AIM is set to drop on September 9. Upon his release from jail, Troy Ave takes action.
Troy Ave is suing NYC venue Irving Plaza and its operator Live Nation over a shooting that occurred at T.I. concert back in May, Pitchfork reports |
According to The New York Post, Troy (nĂ© Roland Collins) claims that the venue’s lax security measures put him and others in danger and that the personnel at both Irving Plaza and Live Nation should have been more active in de-escalating the event.
From the Post: “Authorities have said Collins started firing after getting into a fist fight with a rap critic who wrote a negative review about him. Cops later found the gun he allegedly used during the shooting in his van and matched it to the bullet that killed McPhatter.” It was originally reported that Troy Ave was reacting to a feud with fellow Brooklyn rapper Maino.
A court complaint states that Collins “did not bring any guns and/or weapons of any kind into the venue” although security footage from the shooting appears to show him as the culprit.

Troy Ave was released from Rikers Island in July on $500,000 bail. He now wears a monitor on his ankle and is not allowed to leave the confines of New York City.

The shoegaze legends ready their next full-length.
In a recent interview with Danish publication Undertoner, Slowdive drummer Simon Scott let some important information slip – that the eagerly-awaited new Slowdive album was finished.
"We're finished recording the album and it will be mixed this summer,” Scott confirmed. "It's Neil [Halstead], who is the primary songwriter, but what has changed since the '90s, is that he asked me to manipulate some of the sounds we have recorded. It's not that the album is going to sound electronic [though]. We've played together for two years after reforming, and Neil wanted to capture how good we sound as a live band, in the studio. So in that way it's a live record."
While Scott did not appear to confirm a date for the album to appear, the article’s author, Perry Macleod, added via Reddit that Scott had told him the album “would probably be out in 2017”.
The new album follows two years of successful live shows. The band split up in 1995 after being dropped from the Creation label, but achieved cult success in the years between then and 2014, when they reformed. This new album will be the first since 1995’s Pygmalian, which the band never actually toured when it was originally released. [via Consequence of Sound]

The follow-up to A Good Night in the Ghetto gets a video.
‘How You Want It’ was the perfect thing for Kamaiyah to drop after her impressive mixtape A Good Night in the Ghetto, one of our favorite releases of the year, so-far. But she didn’t need to strong arm us into keeping our attention and the reason is perfectly illustrated in this Damien Sandoval-directed clip. Now, please direct us to exactly where we can get our own Rugrats hoodies.

It’s 8/08, let’s celebrate.
Not only is today #InternationalCatDay, but it’s also 8/08, so what better way to celebrate than by listening to a suite of songs featuring Roland’s trusty TR-808 drum machine.
Released back in 1980, the Transistor Rhythm 808 was initially unpopular as its synthesized analogue sounds simply didn’t emulate drums well enough. At this time, sampling drum machines were beginning to grow in popularity, so the need for bleeps, whooshes and cracks was fading fast – or that’s what people thought.
When the Roland ceased production of the TR-808 in 1983, the unthinkable happened. Thanks to its knock-down price and availability, it was snapped up by budding hip-hop, electro and techno producers and instantly found a niche. Now, the futuristic booms, ticks and claps had found a home so perfect that they’ve been used pretty much ever since. Flick the radio on and chances are there’s an 808 kick ready and waiting to greet you.
We’ve put together an Apple Music playlist of tracks that use the humble TR-808’s sounds most prominently, and while Yellow Magic Orchestra’s ‘1000 Knives’ (the first recorded song ever to use the sounds) isn’t on Apple Music yet, there’s plenty more to sink your teeth into, from T La Rock’s pioneering Rick Rubin-produced breakout ‘It’s Yours’ and Cybotron’s Detroit document ‘Clear’ to Waka Flocka Flame’s 808 Mafia-produced ‘Bustin’ At ‘Em’ and DJ Rashad’s ‘Only One’.
Take a listen here, and watch Daedelus compare the original TR-808 to Roland’s digital update, the TR-8.

There’s a good reason why, back in 2005, Pitchfork proclaimed San Francisco’s Deerhoof “the best band in the world”.
At that stage they were truly at the top of their game. The early critical acclaim of albums like Reveille and Apple O’ had led to a genuine swell of interest in Deerhoof’s peculiar, deeply original avant garde rock music and by the time Milk Man appeared in 2004, there was a sense that they’d reached the next level.
Milk Man was a breath of fresh air, with the band’s four members combining disparate elements – pop, metal, Broadway musicals and TV themes – to emerge with a record so confounding that it was adapted into a children’s ballet not long afterwards. By the time they reached 2005 and The Runners Four, Pitchfork was right.
In the years since, Deerhoof have toured with Radiohead and The Flaming Lips, collaborated with Questlove and The Late Late Show with James Corden bandleader Reggie Watts and released a slew of albums. They’re still in a league of their own, penning music that defies simple comparison, and this summer they dropped their latest full-length, the urgent and economical The Magic.
To celebrate this record, the band have thrown together their first FACT mix, and it’s (almost predictably) all over the shop. Where else will you find a Perez Prado track mixed into Cate Le Bon, before Marcellus Pittman segues into DJ Rashad via some Star Trek sound effects? Like everything Deerhoof does, it’s eclectic but not elitist – just turn up, tune in and leave your inhibitions at the door.
Tracklist:
1. Zannie Owens ‘Everything is Nothing’
2. Charlie Parker ‘Kim’
3. Sir Michael Rocks ‘Come Outside’
4. Perez Prado and His Orchestra ‘Lupita’
5. Cate Le Bon ‘We Might Revolve’
6. Marcellus Pittman ‘T.S.O.T.’
7. Star Trek Sound Effects ‘Food and Drink Synthesizer’
8. DJ Rashad ‘You Azz’
9. Autolux ‘Brainwasher’
10. Erich Wolfgang Korngold ‘The Sea Hawk – Reunion’
11. Two Man Sound ‘Que Tal America’
12. MF Doom ‘No Snakes Alive’
13. Booker Stardrum ‘Touching And’
14. Shilpa Ray ‘Pop Song for Euthanasia’
15. Czarface ‘Lumberjack Match’
16. Dymaxion ‘Gebrauchmusik’
17. The Rolling Stones ‘Crazy Mama’
18. Uda Anak Perempuan Tengah ‘Penhe:y’
19. Ty Segall ‘Squealer Two’
20. Alan Vega ‘Jukebox Babe’
21. GFOTY ‘USA’
22. Frederic Chopin ‘Prelude #1’
