Syracuse punks Perfect Pussy's 4-song demo tape I have lost all desire for feeling felt definitive—which is a mixed blessing for a debut release. Fortunately, the shadow cast by their debut is obliterated within the first seconds of "Driver", the opener from Say Yes to Love (out March 18), the band's forthcoming album for Captured Tracks. There's a touch more clarity here, but little else has changed: Singer Meredith Graves continues to spit fire while guitars torch the earth around her.

What's striking about "Driver" is the juxtaposition between warmth and fury, as the band erects a comforting wall of sound around Graves' roar. The blend of discordant art-school guitars and punk aesthetics puts it in the same orbit as Sonic Youth's "Nic Fit", which takes a similarly brief amount of time to smack you in the face with its message. More than anything, "Driver" makes it clear that Perfect Pussy demand a commitment from their audience that is as total, full-blooded, and unwavering as their own.
