Hip-hop and funk producer Ras G dies aged 39

Afrofuturist producer was an influential figure on LA alternative hip-hop scene and co-founded the Brainfeeder collective

Hip-hop and funk producer Ras G, co-founder of the influential Brainfeeder collective, has died aged 39. No cause of death has been given but he had revealed in December that he had diabetes and pneumonia.

Born Gregory Shorter Jr, Ras G was known for cosmic, Afrofuturist music that mixed genres including jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and psychedelia. He released 24 albums and mixtapes since his debut in 2008, collaborated with artists including Thundercat and Open Mike Eagle, and frequently appeared at the Low End Theory, the Los Angeles club night that helped to reintroduce funk, jazz and electronic music to the city’s hip-hop scene.

Ras_G has left the planet, far beyond the galaxy.
Show us the way to the cosmos my friend.
I will love you forever.
Thank you for your time on earth.

Proms at Battersea review – Top of the Pops, roaring cello and static crackles

Battersea Arts Centre, London
This teasing, challenging new-music bill was a mashup of genres, noises and hi-tech tools that rejoiced in sonic breadth

It opened with a vocal tour de force from Jennifer Walshe: snatches of pop hits poured unaccompanied from her lips, lyrics spliced like an anarchic mashup of Top of the Pops 2 footage. And it ended with Oliver Coates brandishing his cello aloft, its tone distorting with each movement – part helicopter, part electric guitar – as layers of synthesised sound roared around him. They dissipated gradually, leaving a single sustained note and ears ringing.

This latest Proms outing beyond South Kensington didn’t just step away from the cavernous Royal Albert Hall into the intimate, artfully lit and stripped-wall surroundings of the BAC. Performed across three small stages surrounding its standing audience, this mixed programme of new music crossed other boundaries: between music and noise, genres and styles, human performers and hi-tech tools.

This is a classic beat-tape style LP from one of the most under rated Hip Hop producers in the UK right now. Warm and woozy productions that stand out in a world saturated with bland Dilla and Madlib-esque pastiches. Heavily influenced by Bassa’s Mauritian roots, the album takes you on a journey through aboriginal and pan African sounds, with heavy layers of percussion and samples from his fatherland. Featuring Mo Kolours, Al Dobson Jr, Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Shepherd Manyika.

Springing up on the West Coast, LA-based DJ Ray and his pal Goiz are embarking on their first forays into the label world. The idea for the imprint, Open Space, came before Ray’s relocation from their home city of Miami as a platform to push their diverse tastes. Goiz, provides the inaugural release with four tracks that see him side step into slower tempos than the electro indebted productions on his debut last year on Red Ember Records.
Our pick ‘That’s Green’ bounces along on a soothing marimba line, the whistles and percussion intermittently breaking in to give it a tropical, playful feel. As the track gets under way, warm synths slide in overhead supported by a subaquatic bass line and tripped-out guitar samples.
Green will be out on 2nd August via Open Space – Pre-order your copy on Rubadub.

The title stands for ‘Caracunde Club Tool’ – a reference to the song by Afro-Peruvian icon Susana Baca.
Philadelphia producers Precolumbian & Estoc have teamed up for CCT, the latest release on Riobamba's label APOCALIPSIS.
Blending Afro-Peruvian festejo and landó music, styles that incorporate heavy use of the the cajón percussion instrument (as seen on the EP’s cover art), with hardstyle, the two-track release is the first collaboration from the producers.

The release accompanies the launch of Search Engine, a new club night run by Precolumbian and Estoc that according to APOCALIPSIS, “showcases trans women DJs and producers, while creating a safe space to explore nontraditional club music.”
CCT arrives this Friday (July 26). A portion of proceeds will go to Philadelphia’s Morris Home, the only drug and alcohol treatment program in the United States exclusively serving trans and gender non-confirming individuals.

Anglo-Indian musician Sarathy Korwar: 'There's no singular brown voice'

With his second studio album – a ‘modern brown record’ – the producer is challenging perceptions of Indo-jazz. But in the face of racism and tokenism, it can be exhausting

Sarathy Korwar likes to define himself as an “outsider”. Outside popular music, outside the British Asian experience, outside Indian culture. The percussionist and producer blends Indian classical orchestration with free-jazz improvisation and, now, hip-hop.

“I went from being in a position of privilege in India, growing up middle-class and upper-caste, to moving to London a decade ago and seeing myself as a minority for the first time,” he says in his recording studio in Kilburn – a soundproofed shed formerly owned by the folk guitarist Bert Jansch.

'So flawed and problematic': why the term 'world music' is dead

Artists, record labels and even this month’s Womad festival agree that the term is outdated. Is there a better way to market music from across the globe?

Ask most musicians what genre they play and you’ll likely get a prickly response. As one well-known, and slightly tipsy, jazz musician once told me: “If you all stopped obsessing about me playing ‘jazz’, maybe I would be playing festival stages rather than tiny clubs by now.” But while there have been meandering debates about jazz during its long history, another genre has become far more contentious in recent years: world music.

Dreamed up in a London pub in 1987 by DJs, record producers and music writers, it was conceived as a marketing term for the greater visibility of newly popularised African bands, following the success of Paul Simon’s Johannesburg-recorded Graceland the year before. “It was all geared to record shops. That was the only thing we were thinking about,” DJ Charlie Gillett, one of the pub-goers, told the Guardian in 2004. The group raised £3,500 from 11 independent labels to begin marketing “world music”to record stores. “It was the most cost-effective thing you could imagine,” said record producer Joe Boyd. “£3,500 and you get a whole genre – and a whole section of record stores today.”

Since 2013 Montreal-based label Total Stasis have become a platform for downtempo sounds floating between the abstract, the atmospheric and the peaceful. Their first release of 2019 comes from Private Lesson, a new Los Angeles-based project from DJs and producers Damon Eliza Palermo and Nick Malkin; dreamed up via regular studio sessions together.
Under his own name Damon makes ambient musings that have made their way on to labels like 1080p and Lovers Rock, while as Magic Touch his playful house stylings have had regular outings on 100% Silk and True Romance. His production partner Nick Malkin also operates individually, hosting a show on NTS Radio that focuses on atmospheric selections, as well as releasing two abstract cassettes via Sun Ark Records and Geographic North records.
Today’s premiere ‘Digital Native’, featuring the vocal talents of Japanese singer Takako Minekawa, is where the sensibilities of synth-pop meet laid back beats, feeling very much like the result of a song imagined in the LA sunshine.
Private Lesson will be released in late July on Total Stasis – pre-order your copy.
