The Polaris Music Prize is usually awarded for pop and rock, but organizers have just announced that this year, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will add a classical twist to the festivities.
The new collaboration will give the winner of the 2015 Polaris Music Prize the opportunity to perform their original works with the TSO at a concert at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall in 2016.
Also, at the Polaris gala, happening Sept. 21 at the Carlu in Toronto, musicians from the TSO will perform selected songs by shortlisted nominees.
Other performers confirmed for the Polaris gala include Alvvays, Braids, Jennifer Castle, Tobias Jesso Jr., Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Viet Cong.
"The diversity of this year’s short list provides an exciting backdrop for this powerful and worthwhile conversation," said TSO President and CEO in a media release.
Steve Jordan, executive director of the Polaris Music Prize added, "The idea of artistic collaboration is very dear to us, and we’re anticipating some musically thrilling results."
The Polaris Music Prize awards $50,000 to the artist who creates the Canadian album of the year. The winner is chosen for artistic integrity, without regard for musical genre, professional affiliation or sales history, as judged by a panel of selected music critics and professionals.
