This week it’s Gilles’ final show before taking three weeks off in August. On the show Gilles plays a stack of 1980s funk records featuring Slave, Pleasure and Kleeer, all inspired by the new Steve Arrington and Dam Funk tunes that surfaced this week. The Do Over features Lauren Hill’s classic Doo Wop (That Thing) and the latin cover version by Quantic, there’s a brief Secret Waltz Club, as well as live session tracks from Graveola and Moonlight Saving Time. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s brand new music from hip hop producer Jon Wayne, bassist Derrick Hodge, and Connecticut’s finest, The Stepkids, alongside classic tracks from Manuel Gottsching, and Cherrelle with Alexander O’Neal

On a release which is much more dancefloor-orientated than we’re used to hearing from her, Zara McFarlane lends her voice to this four to the floor re-interpretation of the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell classic ‘If This World Were Mine’.
It’s released on the 19th of August on Limestone Records. Check out the track below and pre-order the full release here. |

Today is Werkha’s turn to tell us about his musical background and the things that influence and interest him. He features on the next edition of the Brownswood Bubblers compilations, which is out August 19th. You can pre order it from these outlets: Bandcamp / iTunes / Bleep / Juno / Amazon / Boomkat Check the teaser for the album below: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please. Who are you, where are you from etc.? I’m Tom Leah, also known as Werkha, a musician, producer and DJ. I was born in Manchester where I lived for a part of my childhood until we moved further north to Cumbria. It’s a very rural part of the UK up there, you have to find ways to keep yourself entertained, so I spent a lot of my time playing music with friends, including Bryony who features on this track. In fact Bryony’s mum taught me a lot of what I know about music, exposing me to different styles, from Samba to Calypso, Jazz to Afrobeat. She even had us playing drum n bass tempo jazz fusion at festivals at the age of 14 (I still remember that bass-line). How would you describe your music? It is music for people to move together to, it is music for sound-systems. I want it to be of a good musical standard, but I also want it to be fun to move to! I like the idea of my music sitting somewhere between world and electronic music. Where do you draw your inspiration? It depends, sometimes I remember a moment or experience and try to capture that in a musical idea, sometimes the inspiration is within an approach to the production of the track. The colours of sound inspires me too actually, I see Sidesteppin’ as a kind of deep red or orange in my mind.. I’m not sure why though. Whom do you count amongst your most significant influences when it comes to production? My most significant influences are those producers who carve an original production sound of their own, and who can apply their skills across different musics. Quantic is right up there, Flying Lotus, Mr Scruff, Shackleton, Dimlite, Damon Albarn, there are loads more… Jneiro Jarel’s production on Shapes Of Broad Minds’ Craft Of The Lost Art is spot on. Bill Leader’s Bert Jansch & John Renbourn recordings are beautiful too. What releases / gigs are out there or coming soon? Amongst others, I’ve got gigs at Dimensions Festival, Zoo Festival and Fabric coming up. My debut lead release track Cube & Puzzle will be seeing a vinyl re-release by Cool Kid Music in a month or so, and I will also be releasing a 5 track EP within the next couple of months which I can’t wait to tell you more about! There are some remixes stewing too. Do you have a current DJ mix or any tracks that are available for free download right now that we could point folks to? I do indeed, I did a mix for Fabric a little while ago which captures the more electronic aspect of my DJ sets. You can listen/download that here.. http://soundcloud.com/fabric/werkha-fabriclive-x-hit-run Where can folks go online to check out you and your music? I’ll be whipping up a website soon, but until then you can check my music, gigs and banter here… soundcloud.com/werkha facebook.com/werkhamusic twitter.com/werkha What are you going to do after this interview? Funnily enough, i’m going to spend the day making music with Bryony in the sun! We both have a rare bit of free time to enjoy playing music together, so i’m tuning my guitar, plugging in the bass and putting the kettle on.
