From the Weeknd to Caribou: Canadian Grammy nominees 2016

It's been an incredible year for Canadian music, and that fact wasn't overlooked by (arguably) the world's most famous music awards association. The Grammys, taking place on Feb. 15, 2016, will honour the regular suspects. Here's hoping some of the great Canadian music that's surfaced over the past year will be included in that list. Here are your 2016 Grammy nominees from the true north:

The Weeknd

Aside from his pending Oscar nomination (best original song for 50 Shades of Grey's "Earned It"), Abel Tesfaye has been nominated for countless awards since he blew onto the international scene. His 2014 Grammy nomination was on a collaboration with Wiz Khalifa, and this year's nominations show just how far he's come since then: his seven nominations include the coveted album of the year and record of the year.

Nominations:

Record of the year (“Can’t Feel My Face”)
Album of the year (Beauty Behind the Madness)
Best pop solo performance (“Can’t Feel My Face”)
Best R&B performance (“Earned It”)
Best R&B song (“Earned It”)
Best urban contemporary album (Beauty Behind the Madness)
Best song written for visual media (“Earned It”)

Drake

Drake's mantle is not exactly empty — he's graced it with nine MMVAs, nine BET Awards, 15 BET Hip Hop Awards and one Grammy, for best rap album for 2013's Take Care. This year, he's up for five awards, most notably best rap album.

Nominations:

Best rap performance (“Back to Back”)
Best rap performance (Nicki Minaj Featuring Drake and Lil Wayne, “Truffle Butter”)
Best rap/sung collaboration (Nicki Minaj featuring Drake, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown, “Only”)
Best rap song (“Energy”)
Best rap album (If You're Reading This It's Too Late)

Justin Bieber

Despite having his share of hardware (including five Junos), Bieber's awards cabinet has no Grammys in it. This year he's nominated in one category to go along with two prior noms.

Nomination:

Best dance recording (Skrillex And Diplo With Justin Bieber, “Where Are Ü Now”)

Caribou

Dundas, Ontario's Dan Snaith won the 2015 Juno for electronic album of the year for Our Love. Now he's up for a Grammy for the same category. This is his first Grammy nomination.

Nomination:

Best dance/electronic album (Our Love)

Alex Cuba

Cuban-Canadian Alex Cuba already took home a Latin Grammy for 2015's Healer to go along with his other four Latin Grammys. Now he's up for an American one.

Nomination:

Best latin pop album (Healer)

Ron Korb

Korb has won several awards over the course of his nearly 30-year career, but this is his first Grammy nomination.

Nomination:

Best new age album (Asia Beauty)

Various artists

An album decades in the making, Native North America, Vol. 1 explores rare and out-of-print recordings by First Nations, Metis and Inuit musicians from Canada and Alaska.

Nomination:

Best Historical Album (Native North America Vol. 1: Aboriginal Folk, Rock, And Country 1966–1985)

CFCF

Montreal's Michael Silver gets his first Grammy nod for his Max Richter remix.

Nomination:

Best remixed recording, non-classical (Max Richter, "Berlin By Overnight" CFCF Remix)

Yannick Nézet-Séguin

The chances are good that hot-shot conductor Nézet-Séguin will win his first Grammy for the third instalment in his Mozart opera series on Deutsche Grammophon, with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and this all-star cast.

Nomination:

Best opera recording (Mozart: Die Entführung aus dem Serail)

Karina Gauvin

It's great to see soprano Gauvin getting recognized for the amazing work she's doing as one of today's leading baroque soloists, and in this case helping us rediscover forgotten masterpieces.

Nomination:

Best opera recording (Steffani: Niobe, Regina di Tebe)

Marc-André Hamelin

Rare is the string quartet that can rise to pianist Hamelin's intellectual and technical prowess, but the Takacs Quartet proved they were up to the challenge on this awesome 2015 Shostakovich release.

Nomination:

Best chamber music/small ensemble performance (Shostakovich: Piano Quintet & String Quartet No. 2)
