KikwearWe here at Mixjunkies have been in the electronic music scene for years. Back when everything was in warehouses, skating rinks, private halls and anywhere promoters could land a huge venue. Everything was a “rave” and brought out some of the best in people. This was the start of our love for electronic music and with that love for music came a fashion style that was as unique as the music.
Kikwear was a big part of that culture back in day, with almost every party goer sporting amazing clothing that promoted dancing. Kikwear’s pants, which are amazing to dance in are still around and the brand is on the come back. We sat down with the president of the company to give us some info on where the brand has been and where it’s headed.
Kikwear disappeared for a while where you been?
Kikwear had a huge run in the ’90s when the rave scene was growing around the country and then boom, the parties dried up around 2001. We think that this had a lot to do with events not being properly permitted, so there were a ton of underground parties and who knows what was going on. As the rave scene tapered off, so did the demand for Kikwear and Kikgirl. However, we never stopped producing our gear. We just scaled way back and offered a handful of styles on www.Kikwear.com which is how we re-launched last December. On our comeback to the EDM arena, we aren’t selling retailers on the streets or malls. This strategy is working really well as it’s a new climate that is very much Internet and social media based. We didn’t have a lot of technology to promote our brand back in the ’90s.
How has your brand evolved since your initial launch?
Our brand has evolved a ton since our initial move into the EDM scene. We used to focus primarily on selling pants and a couple of jackets. Today, we offer an old skool like of denim phatts, new dance style wide-legs, t’s, head wear, jackets, hoodies and accessories. We’re selling the categories of gear that our fans and customers sport at events. The goal is to reach the new generation of ravers who may not be that familiar with our brand and in order to do so, we wanted to drop with a bang. That’s why we’re running some of our famous “K” logos on styles other than pants. Going forward, we’ll be expanding the line with more dance pants and denims. We have our super phatt line of pants set right now, so the key is adding styles that are in the 20-23″ leg opening category. This will help us achieve more of a lifestyle brand and reach a broader consumer base who loves our brand, but doesn’t want to wear super wide pants. We’ll always stay true to our roots with the assortment of gear we produce and offer. Now it’s time to expand our line so we can accommodate our fans around the world.
What kind of products can we look forward to with the relaunch of your brand?
With our re-launch, the focus has always been pants because that’s what we’re best known for. However, as I mentioned there are other categories available now on our website and we’ll continue adding new stuff throughout this year and into 2014. We spent so much time and energy building our pant assortment this year that we never had a chance to break with killer shorts. We’ll be offering them in the Spring/Summer of 2014 though. Look for new logos to appear on t’s, lids, visors, beanies, hoodies and of course our phatts as we head into Fall/Winter this year. We’re also adding new accessories that are key to the EDM enthusiast.
You say you’re an EDM brand now how will you be tailoring to electronic dance music fans?
We’re definitely an EDM clothing brand and I think we identify so well with ravers because our gear is really chill and our pants are epic for dancing. That’s the key right there—people love dancing at EDM events and our phatts are all about freedom of expression so there’s a perfect synergy there. Everything we offer appeals to EDM music fans as we put a huge emphasis not only on the styles, but the colors. Look for an expansion of that too when we release new styles. There will be reflective piping and other details that the ravers love. If you check the re-launch line out, you’ll see that all of our non denim pants have reflective action including screen printed logos. The one exception is our 23″ microsuede cargo pant which is more mellow, but insanely comfortable and a huge hit on our line—everyone that owns a pair loves it! In fact, we’ll be adding white and khaki in the same styles so look for them in the very near future.
What are some of the best EDM geared products you have right now?
It’s really hard to say what our best products are because everyone has different taste and needs. We are well known for our phat pants so we get a ton of action in the 32″ denim and rave style pants. The more extreme raver and kandi kids love the 50″ stash pocket pant and the old skool 69er which is our most famous pant in company history. Shufflers love our non denim line of pants because they’re really light weight and have a great shape. The also look incredible under black lighting, so you’ll be noticed at an indoor event for sure!
Can the mixjunkies get a little discount on your gear?
We’re stoked to be partnering up with Mixjunkies and have set up a special Kikwear.com 10% discount code for all of your loyal fans. All they have to do is enter “Mixjunkies” (not case sensitive) where it asks for a special code at Kikwear.com, and bam they’re going to save some money on the gear.

We have been teasing Empire of the Sun’s upcoming single release since we found out about it. ‘DNA‘ is set to be another massive track from the guys, with remixes including Calvin Harris, Alex Metric, Brodinski and more. Today, Empire of the Sun have released the official music video for their upcoming release on September 24th. The video for ‘DNA‘ follows the Australian band members Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore around as they bike their way to a convenient store. Eventually, you find the guys at a house party full of beautiful women, kegs, and of course, a pool. But don’t show up to a house looking like Empire of the Sun or a scared mother will call the cops on you. Not the party, just you. See what we mean by watching the video for ‘DNA‘.

krewella-pendulum-watercolour-cover
When Rob Swire announced that Pendulum will be teaming up for new music in 2014, we could not have been more excited. It was like finding out Santa isn’t really, but then getting kicking in the face with a flying deer.
Krewella are on the verge of releasing their debut album Get Wet in a matter of days. So when Krewella today released an acoustic version of Pendulum’s monster hit ‘Watercolour‘ off of the album Immersion, we were so stoked.
The Chicago electro trio who are now based in LA , teamed up with composer Evan Duffy, who is known for his incredible YouTube videos and scoring movies and video games. With this absolutely beautiful version of ‘Watercolour‘, a chorus of strings adds a layer depth and feeling while the piano melody is really what powers the songs. Combined with the raw and powerful vocals of Yasmine and Jahan, this is a must have for any music fan. Plus, it is a free downloand, so can’t be upset about that.
