If you follow my writing or even know me personally, you know that I love all types of artists and music. But I really, REALLY fucking love The Partysquad. Like, words can’t express how much these guys and their music means to me. That’s why when I found out that the boys were coming to my city, I practically jumped for joy to hear that I’d be able to actually see my favorite Dutch duo live in Philadelphia. Saturday night was not only one of the most memorable nights in my life- it was hands down the most fun and interactive concert I’ve ever attended.
Ruben and Jerry just recently toured in select cities all over the U.S., bringing their fierce party flair to Americans in dire need of great music and a great time. Attendees of the Mad Decent Block Party in a few cities were graced with their presence, but I l think that the magic happens between artists and their audiences when they play shows independently. And I know that it’s literally impossible to have a bad time when you see The Partysquad. I mean, c’mon…. their music is full of energy, it’s fun, it’s crazy, it’s contagious and addicting and wild all at once. It makes crowds instantly happy and makes them forget about whatever they’re worrying about and just enjoy the party. It’s Ruben and Jerry’s personalities translated into rhythms and pitches. Philadelphia was so lucky to get to hang out with The Partysquad for a night. I’ve got to personally thank Actual Records for making this night happen and shining light on several very talented artists with very different musical stylings. The opening acts were incredibly varied; this show was suited for any music lover’s taste. The night started off with some of Philadelphia’s greatest local talents. Ethan DuBB, Love City DJs, BHB, The Architekt, Shane SixTen, and more supported what would be the best show to be at this past Saturday. These guys are heavy hitters in Philly and never seem to disappoint when playing for crowds all over the city. While I enjoyed each artist, nothing really prepared me for what was about to happen on stage when The Partysquad started playing. It’s not that I didn’t know what we as an audience were about to see, it was the incredible force of energy Ruben and Jerry give off as soon as they hit the stage that blew me away. I feel like these guys know how to take a whole crowd of people, metaphorically grab us by the shoulders, and say, “Oh hey, guys! We’re gonna have a fucking party right now and you’re the guests of honor!” I think I can speak for the whole audience when I say that we happily obliged to the boys’ request. The Partysquad played everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. This is what makes Ruben and Jerry so unique; their musical style is virtually limitless. From trap, to reggae, to house, to hardstyle, to throwbacks, to moombahton, to even their famous Dutch anthems (including a favorite of mine, Helemaal Naar De Klote), we got a taste of The Partysquad’s effortless capabilities to successfully play any and every genre. But let’s stop genre dropping and just really get down to why this show was so damn perfect. The Partysquad has the ideal balance between interacting with their fans and showcasing their music. The Partysquad’s music is intriguing enough, so I was happy to find out that they barely use visuals. While Jerry let the music speak for itself, often acknowledging the crowd with a little nod or wave just to let us know that he appreciated our company, Ruben tastefully MC’ed their set and made the audience know that we were their party squad for the night. I’ll be honest… I’m typically not a fan too much MC’ing, but I feel like Ruben knows exactly how much to speak and what to say to pump audiences up. He’s also got a great sense of making audiences feel like he’s directly talking to each person one-on-one…. kind of like we were all his BFF’s. I don’t know if it was the unified “sit down” during “Oh My” that made me realize that the audience was really vibing with each other (we literally all sat down and jumped with Ruben and Jerry once that crazy drop happens in “Oh My”) or what, but I felt like I could feel positive energy and overwhelming sense of rave friendship throughout the whole venue between everyone. They made us feel so comfortable with each other that when Ruben and Jerry played their newest collaboration with Mitchell Niemeyer, “Pants Down“ (available October 25 via Spinnin Records), the whole audience was like, “Is this our cue to pull our pants down? We’re all party friends here… let’s do this!” Here’s a very awesome video who came all the way from Toronto (thanks Jonchius!) to meet up and see The Partysquad live. We tried to get the sit down on tape but there’s so much you can do when you’re trying to experience the moment. But you’ll get the jist: Click here to view the embedded video. If you’re wondering what Ruben and Jerry are like in real life, they are just as sweet as their music is fierce. They both appreciate their fans to the fullest; I can honestly say that after I had the honor of meeting them I am still beaming from ear to ear thinking about how important they made me felt as a writer and fan. It’s one thing to be a great artist and to have the ability to put on jaw-dropping shows; but it takes a special type of artist who truly connects with their fans both on and off stage. I’m proud to say that these two made me feel like we were long time friends as soon as I gave them both a really big, sweaty hug (it was super hot in that warehouse, but they didn’t even care because they knew how excited I was to meet them). Unfortunately the guy who owned the warehouses was pretty strict about people hanging out front of the building, so my time with Ruben and Jerry was pretty short. However, they made me feel so comfortable that they made me feel like I could email them any time with all of the questions I wanted to ask them and all of the things I wanted to say to them. I usually try and pinpoint a few specific highlights from shows, but I really couldn’t with this one. The Partysquad’s entire set was a highlight for me. They played so many of my favorite jams, including “Pullup 2012″, their latest collaboration with Major Lazer featuring Ward 21, “Mashup the Dance“, Missy Elliot’s “Work It” (can’t ever go wrong with that), Flosstradamus’ remix of “Original Don”, and so many more incredible original singles and club hits. I could practically write a ten page paper on this, but I’ll save it for the next time I see The Partysquad live. Thank you SO MUCH for giving me the best way to end my summer, Ruben and Jerry. Your music has made so many memories for my friends and me and I can’t thank you both enough for the way you guys have impacted our lives as fans. Come back soon…. Philadelphia misses you already! Don’t want summer to end? Same here. The Partysquad’s got you covered with their 2013 Summer Mixtape! Keep up with Ruben and Jerry for more chances to see them live and hear their music by following them on Twitter, liking them on Facebook, or even visiting their website! |

People say if the original was great, don’t touch it. There are some people who didn’t get that memo. George Lucas and Steven Speilberg are the most notable of these two. Apparently, upcoming producer John Christian didn’t get the memo either. But instad of having hoards of people hate him, like the former names, John Christian is actually getting his rework released by the creator of the original. In 2001, Tiesto created a brand new sub-lable, Magik Muzik, in which he made the first release his track ‘Flight 463‘. The release of this track solidified Magik Muzik’s place in the dance music scene, and Tiesto as one of the world premiere talents. It is a track that has become an instant classic, but that no one ever thought of touching. But more than a decade after it’s initial release, John Christian has taken the classic dance tune, and combined it with modern sound and banging rhythms and bass. Tiesto was so impressed with the track, that now he has decided to release it on his Musical Freedom imprint. Preview John Christian’s take on the classic Tiesto track above, and get your copy as Musical Freedom releases it on September 30th. |

Sometimes a great mix is just a great mix. We don’t always need to tell you all about the artist or where the mix is from, the music itself can do all the “talking” needed. This Groove Cruise Podcast mixed by LA Riots just seems like the perfect mix today. It’s energy, flow, and track selection just seems to be on point. Take a listen, you’ll agree, we’re sure of it.
