This week Gilles was joined by US jazz bassist Derrick Hodge. Originally from Philadelphia, Hodge is a singer/songwriter/producer who has worked with hip hop royalty, including luminaries such as Common, Q Tip, Kanye West and Timbaland to name a few, but he first rose to fame as a performer in his own right, playing alongside Robert Glasper in The Experiment, fusing jazz with hip hop, to great critical acclaim. Gilles and Derrick discussed the debut solo album, ‘Live Today’, which is forthcoming on the legendary Blue Note Recordings label and features Common, Robert Glasper and drummer Chris Dave.
There was a double Do Over this week, making the connection between De La Soul and Parliament, and an unexpected link between Rod Stewart and Jorge Ben. Plus, Gilles played the unheard session track from last week’s Mount Kimbie live session, and featured London Grammar’s new LP as album of the week. And of course, there was new music from Willis Earl Beal, Earl Sweatshirt, Robert Glasper and Alex Barck alongside classics from Max Roach, Pharaoh Sanders and Milton Nascimento.
