100 Word Review: Erena Terakubo with Legends - Burkina

Label: Eighty-Eight's

Released: July 2013

Product of the Sapporo Junior School Jazz Orchestra alto player Erena Terakubo caught the nation’s attention at an early age. Burkina is the third album from the 21 year-old, backed here by the appropriately named Legends – Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb and Lenny White. The band is totally swinging (surprise, surprise) performing a set mainly consisting of standards. What's new is discovering Terakubo’s talent as composer, with the title track and Warmth a couple of the standout tracks on the album. There’s no denying Terakubo’s technical ability and this is a classy performance. A great album for straight-ahead fans.
