The top 10 ballroom tracks of 2014 Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:54 AM PST FACT’s regular ballroom correspondent Niall Connolly, AKA CVNT TRAXXX, picks his prime cuts from 2014 and drops off his Year In Vogue mix. Looking back now, at the end of December, 2014 has proved to be a bumper year for ballroom and vogue. From Mike Q and the talented Qween Beat production squad’s various collabs, productions and remixes, to Jennifer Lopez’s mid-summer release ‘Tens’ featuring legendary commentator Jack Mizrahi, right up to the storming ‘Bad Bitch’ by Gage & Kevin Prodigy, which dropped only weeks ago, the scene and the sound goes from strength to strength. Pulling in diverse influences this year from deep house, underground US club and even grime, the genre keeps beating its own path through the musical jungle of dance culture, picking up more attention and exposure as it goes. But the truth is, every year is a good year for vogue, you just have to know where to look and listen. Ballroom isn’t going away, and its history has already shown that it’s impervious to mainstream success and fickle fads. Consider it the little genre that could. With that in mind, here are my top 10 ballroom/vogue tracks of 2014 – with the exception of a mystery track that’s going to absolutely slay when it comes out next year. Burial – Rival Dealer EP Posted: 23 Jan 2014 08:49 PM PST    Burial - Rival Dealer EP Hyperdub: 2013 In theory, we know who Burial is. After the release of Untrue, his newfound crossover success prompted a brief glimpse of his identity. His name is Will Bevan and he's from South London. He stated, "I'm a lowkey person and I just want to make some tunes, nothing else". His career is scattered sparsely with interviews that make clear his desire to let the music stand for itself. Besides that, our idea of the individual behind a defining sound of the past decade is largely unknown. Two classic LPs followed by a string of carefully selected 12"'s have developed his sound into something that feels comfortable, but not in a bad way. It's nothing resembling staleness-the core of his music is like a welcome trip to a familiar place. That place is dark and isolated, but when a sonic journey is needed no one captures that sense of escapism quite like Burial. Progressions in his sound and song structure have given new life to his songs, but he stays grounded in roots much like in his personal life, quietly hovering in the distance. The release of his latest EP at the end of last year, Rival Dealer, continues the calculated growth of his sound. The extended tracks are here. The fundamentals of his signature sound are here. But something is different. He's not satisfied to let his music stay muted in the background. For once it sounds like Will Bevan, Burial, or whoever else he's trying to give a voice too, is finally reaching to be heard. Lead track "Rival Dealer" slams forward with an aggression uncharacteristic to anything Burial's ever made. The track is cut with samples of self-assurance, sexual identity, and  even the bombastic "you know my mothafuckin' style!" before things break away into a final, briefly tranquil moment of bliss. He's not tapping your shoulder anymore; it lands like a clean punch in the face. Beyond the restless opener, "Hiders" is even more of a departure. It builds to a pop-ballad crescendo echoing, "You don't have to be alone", as it continues to push into new territory. It's built on a sound palate so dissimilar to Burial's discography it almost feels beamed in from a different decade. It's jarring, but it's where Rival Dealer finally breaks into optimism. The thirteen-minute "Come Down To Us" grows and recedes in a manner not unlike the title track, only swapping out the combative stomp for a glossy shine. The final moments of the EP close with a clip of filmmaker Lana Wachowski accepting the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award: "Without examples, without models, I began to believe voices in my head; that I was a freak, that I am broken, that there is something wrong with me, that I will never be loveable. Years later I find the courage to admit that I am transgender and that this does not mean that I am unlovable. So this world that we imagine in this room might be used to gain access to other rooms, to other worlds previously imaginable". Over the span of a decade, Burial has created a catalog built for moments of introspection. In a rare statement he said he wanted the EP to serve as "anti-bullying tunes that maybe help someone to believe in themselves, to not be afraid, to not give up". It's an uncharacteristically clear statement of intent from the reclusive producer, but it helps shed light on his most divisive work to date. "Tell me I belong", echoed a voice on Untrue's classic "Archangel". It's been seven years of quiet production since that album released and Rival Dealer is the triumphant statement that everyone-be it mutated voices on earlier records, Will Bevan, or any individual regardless of their identity-deserves to be heard. 4.5 out of 5 stars 4.5 out of 5 You can buy Rival Dealer on Amazon.

Burial, Rival Dealer Posted: 30 Dec 2013 06:59 AM PST   Fulfilling what the promise of his music has been all along Six years since a proper album and the elegiac music of Burial has only gotten better, shedding the rhythmic constraints of 4/4 techno for living, breathing EP suites that don’t climb toward peaks so much as unfold like stories. Rival Dealer is pure ambience, subbing out the natural grandeur of beaches and canyons for the sound of lonely city streets at night, haunted by occasional beats and vinyl crackle that blankets the mix like light rain. Most surprising here is how he handles vocals: Once reliant on house-music divas warped almost beyond recognition, now he favors choirboys and spoken-word appeals from hard-luck people just looking for a little peace of mind — a less unusual approach than he took on Burial and Untrue but one that makes the uplifting, almost churchlike subtext of his music clearer than it’s ever been. The key is balance: For every Moby-like turn toward the assurance of a loving and transcendent hand is another jag down a dark, moderately threatening alleyway. Supple, mysterious, more abstract than anything he’s done before but paradoxically more immediate, Rival Dealer fulfills what the promise of his music has been all along: the sound of public places long after the people have left.

Burial: "Come Down to Us" Posted: 12 Dec 2013 10:22 AM PST Over six years have passed since Burial's Untrue, and since then he's expanded his vision over a series of EPs and collaborative works. He's often stretched his sound out into 10-minute-plus segments on those EPs, a length he reaches for again on "Come Down to Us". It utilizes some of the same samples as the prior "Hiders", and even loops back to "Loner" from last year's Kindred EP, which uses the same snatch of dialogue ("There's something out there"). The beginning resembles something like an alien torch song, with familiarly wobbly vocal passages set to a beautifully sluggish rhythm. From there it heads into the stratosphere, dipping into moody slow-drag atmospherics and reaching an icy pop high in its center. "Come Down to Us" tackles identity and loss, ending with Burial's most overtly political statement yet, via a speech from the 2012 Human Right Campaign gala by transgender filmmaker Lana Wachowski. The wild shifts in tone of the track form an appropriate mirror to the contrasting mood of the vocal snippets, which range from optimism ("You are not alone") to a quite disturbing degree of despair ("Excuse me, I'm lost," a scared, lonely voice intones). It's all executed with layer upon layer of sampled noise, providing a depth that makes it feel like you've barely scratched the surface even after countless plays.
