Throughout the week, a whole lot of material gets posted here on XLR8R. And while we know—and love—that some hardcore readers will eagerly pour over every single news story, interview, podcast, video, and MP3 download that appears on the site, we also realize that for most people, it's impossible to see everything, which means that some quality XLR8R content is likely to get missed in the hustle and bustle of everyone's daily lives. In the interest of making it easier for everyone to catch up, every Friday we present The Lowdown, a weekly wrap-up of the top 10 tidbits from our site. read more |

Hailing from the UK, Duke Slammer is a producer who values the art of "the funk" more than most. "Flatland," a one-off freebie from the active artist, is a fine example of the brand of synth-soaked, funk-laced boogie and house he is keen to craft. Built around a thick, squelching bassline, "Flatland" is light-hearted but by no means simple, as the tune restlessly shifts through a handful of melodic ideas and percussion patterns, keeping things lively across its entire run. In addition to sending along his new track, Duke Slammer has also shared a cheeky animated video for "Acid Duke" (lifted from an upcoming 7" release for the Karl Marx Land label), which can be watched after the jump. read more |

Together as Dusky, Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman have formed an uncommonly dependable partnership. With each Dusky record that has surfaced since 2011, listeners and—perhaps more importantly—DJs have learned that the London pair could be counted on for at least one effective (and usually rather catchy) garage/bass/house hybrid per effort. With its first release of 2014, Dusky has come up with another piece of well-mannered club music, taking only the smallest steps outside of its comfort zone in the process. The outfit's dependability may be unshaken as a result, but "9T8" is ultimately far from exciting.

There's no need to really sell this edition of Press Play; the artists responsible for this week's selection of fresh audio and video speak for themselves. So, if the likes of Madlib, Shlohmo, DJ Rashad, Mickey Pearce, FKA Twigs, Glacher Lustwerk, Maddslinky, Luke Abbott, Ricardo Villalobos, and Osborne sound like an intriguing bunch, we suggest that all interested parties get to pressing the play buttons located after the jump ASAP. read more |

Last year, Los Angeles producer and Funkmosphere collaborator Nicky Benedek (a.k.a. Benedek) began working with Peoples Potential Unlimited (or PPU), a Washington, DC label known for heralding obscure soul, boogie, and house from decades past. As one of the few modern artists on the roster, Benedek crafts funkified, bass-heavy music grounded in tradition and history, albeit with his own futuristic slant. read more |
